From the Harford County Public Library:
Renowned for unique auction items at its annual Gala, the Harford County Public Library Foundation recently added a catered lunch for six with New York Times bestselling Author Jeff Shaara to its live auction. The auction will take place at 8:30 pm on Saturday, November 3, at the Abingdon Library during the Library’s Gala, Once Upon a Time – an Evening in the Stacks. Shaara has written 11 historical war novels that have made the New York Times bestseller list and will also be the feature author for the Foundation’s annual Night Out @ the Library on Friday, April 19, 2013.
The new auction addition includes lunch with Shaara and host County Executive David Craig on April 19 at historic Tudor Hall, the family home of John Wilkes Booth. Representatives from the Cultural Arts Board will also be on hand to lead tours of the estate and serve as docents to the Masks of Lincoln Smithsonian Exhibit that will be on display. WOLO, Harford County’s first gourmet food-truck, will be catering the luncheon.
Shaara’s novels about the Civil War, the American Revolution and World Wars I & II have been met with outstanding acclaim. He was approached to write his first book, Gods and Generals, after the death of his father, Michael Shaara, author of the Pulitzer Prize winning The Killer Angels. Gods and Generals was a prequel to his father’s work and remained on the New York Times bestseller list for 15 weeks. Over the next decade Shaara’s books have met with similar praise.
His new trilogy marks a return to the Civil War. The first volume, A Blaze of Glory, was released this May and made its debut at #7 on the New York Times bestseller list. The book recounts the Battle of Shiloh and was released to coincide with the 150th anniversary. His next two works will feature Vicksburg and the final campaigns of Sherman from Atlanta through the end of the war in the Carolinas. These two volumes will be released in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Shaara has received the National Library Association’s “Boyd Award,” the Lincoln Forum’s “Richard Nelson Current” award and the “Bell I. Wiley” award from the New York Civil War Round Table, among many others.
“We are thrilled to partner with Jeff Shaara for our Gala and our 2013 Night Out @ the Library,” said Amber C. Shrodes, Director of the Harford County Public Library Foundation. “Through his novels Mr. Shaara brings the complex characters of the Civil War to life. I think our guests will be fascinated by his extensive knowledge on the subject and his detailed portrayal of individuals like “Stonewall” Jackson, Robert E. Lee, Winfield Scott Hancock, and Joshua Chamberlain.”
“The live auction is always a highlight of the Gala, and this year will be no exception,” said Dave Patzer, President of the Foundation and co-chair of the Gala. “The lunch with Jeff Shaara is an excellent addition to our live auction offerings and is already generating excitement among potential bidders.”
Packages also slated for the live auction include “BackYard Crashers,” a custom backyard makeover valued at nearly $50,000; a two-day off-road JEEP adventure; a “Foodie Tour” of Charleston, S.C., and a dinner for 10 by Pairings Bistro.
Proceeds support a vast array of initiatives, including the Library’s early literacy program, the annual Summer Reading Program and Little Leapers, a new STEM initiative.
