From the Harford County Sheriff’s Office:
Detectives with the Harford County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division have arrested Garfield Smith III, 21, of 1620 Candlewood Court, Edgewood, and have charged him with the Jan. 31, 2013 murder of Michael Wayne Kearins, 17, and the attempted murder of Christopher Thomas Cousins, 18.
Smith was taken into custody at approximately 3:00 p.m. on Feb. 5, when deputies observed him as a passenger in a car that was driving in the Edgewater Village Community. He has been charged with 1st and 2nd degree murder, 1st and 2nd degree assault, and use of firearm in the commission of a felony in the death of Kearins; and attempted 1st and 2nd degree murder, 1st and 2nd degree assault, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and reckless endangerment in the attempted murder of Cousins. Both victims lived in the 1900 block of Harewood Road in Edgewood.
On Jan. 31 at 10:36 p.m., Harford County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a shots fired call in the 1600 block of Candlewood Court in Edgewood. Deputies arrived minutes later and discovered Kearins and Cousins had been shot multiple times. The victims were located in Cunion Recreational Park which is located off Trimble Road but adjacent to Candlewood Court. Kearins was transported by ambulance to the Upper Chesapeake Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Cousins, was flown to University of Maryland Shock Trauma by Maryland State Police Medivac where he remains hospitalized in good condition.
Detectives are investigating information that Cousins and Kearins had gone to the Park to purchase marijuana when they were shot by Smith. Smith is currently held in the Harford County Detention Center pending a bond review by a Harford County District Court Commissioner.
When is Sheriff Jesse Bane going to start denouncing this kind of violence. We never hear anything from him unless he is at a pancake breakfast politicing…. Maybe he doesn’t want to upset Mildred Sammy….
I don’t think JB coming out and saying, “Killing people is bad for our community” is going to change anything. He denounced it by assigning officers to CID, having them swiftly investigate this crime, and making an arrest. If there is someone out there with a magical voice that will end all crime by denouncing it, please tell them to run in the next election.
