From the Harford County Sheriff’s Office:
[February 12, 2014 Edgewood, MD] — Harford County Sheriff’s detectives are continuing their investigation into a deputy involved shooting that occurred shortly after midnight earlier this morning.
On February 11, 2014 at 11:56pm, Harford County Sheriff’s deputies, along with paramedics from the Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company, responded to the 500 block of Crownwood Court, for a report of an overdose victim. While en route deputies were advised a 26 year-old male had taken an unknown quantity of pills and that he was alleged to have assaulted a female subject by pushing her down a flight of stairs. Deputies were also advised the subject may be in possession of a large knife.
Upon arrival deputies observed a male subject in front of the home and in possession of a machete type knife. The subject then ran into the woods and towards Rt. 24. Deputies pursued the subject on foot. As the suspect and the deputy approached Rt. 24 the suspect turned and started back towards the deputy again refusing repeated orders to drop the knife. Fearing for his safety the deputy then fired his duty weapon striking the suspect several times.
The suspect has been identified as Brian Matthew Ogle, 26 of 513 Crown wood Ct in Edgewood. He was treated at the scene and subsequently taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit.
Shannon Nicole Barkley, 24, of the same address, told police there was an altercation between her and Ogle during which time Ogle had allegedly thrown her down a flight of stairs. Ogle then reportedly left the residence and she locked the door. Ogle was reported to have gone to his vehicle, smash out a window, and retrieve a large machete type knife. He was attempting to kick in the door to the home when he saw police arriving and fled the scene.
Barkley was transported to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center by ambulance for evaluation related to her fall down the stairs. Her injuries appear minor and are not life threatening.
The deputy, whose name has not yet been released, is a 34 year-old, seven year member of the Sheriff’s Office assigned to the Police Services Bureau – Southern Precinct. Per agency policy and procedure he has been placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated.
Ogle will be charged with 2nd degree assault on Ms. Barkley as well as resisting arrest, attempted 1st and 2nd degree assault on a police officer, failure to obey a lawful order, and other weapons charges. He remains in stable condition at Shock Trauma.
Rt. 24 between Hanson Road and Trimble Road was closed for approximately 2 hours while detectives processed the crime scene. It has since reopened.
