From the office of Congressman Andy Harris:
Congressman Andy Harris, M.D., urged the Department of Health and Human Services to reject consideration of the former Army Reserve Center at 404 Malcom Drive, Westminster, MD, as a facility for temporarily housing children who have come into the United States from other countries without an adult guardian. Because members of Congress are not being given unscripted access to HHS facilities, the potential health risks to the community are unknown. Should HHS attempt to proceed with housing them at this facility, Congressman Harris will use any and all resources at his disposal as a member of the House Appropriations Committee and in particular the subcommittee that oversees the HHS budget to stop this.
Congressman Andy Harris, M.D. released the following statement:
“These unaccompanied minors who have entered our nation illegally must not be brought to Carroll County Maryland. Flying them to Maryland only to turn around and fly them back home is nonsensical. Instead, President Obama should immediately return them to their nation of origin. President Obama created this problem and now he should fix it. Should this Administration attempt to put them in Carroll County, I will use every tool at my disposal though the appropriations process to stop this.”
Is it the result of Obama policies or just a bad law on the books that excepts minor children from normal deportation proceedings? Why is this happening at such alarming numbers from Central American and not from Mexico itself? If we are to keep these minor children, then for how long? What is the process of deportation to other countries?
Personally, I think this human tragedy is making our people look less tolerant and at the same time how many can just come in and colonize our country. As a nation, WE need to control our border and decide who and how many come in? Give me your poor and huddled masses doesn’t seem to apply to people that disregard the rule of law and start their trek to our country without permission. I also do feel a bit conflicted by all this since I emigrated to the USA and I am legal citizen. So what should be the process to resolve this situation other than placing kids in danger?
Here is “Doctor” Harris typically shooting off his mouth without any knowledge of (or at least reference to) the fact that the law in question was enacted (legislative branch) during the Bush administration (executive branch). And so what’s wrong with a law that guarantees legal hearings (judicial branch) before executive action (I thought Mr. freedom-loving Harris was concerned about rampant and excessive executive action).
Once again, Congressman Harris, as opposed to candidate Harris, seems unmindful of his own Greek
immigrant roots. Greeks and Italians and Poles, etc. were the Hispanics of their day. I guess Cong. Harris has never seen any Hispanic people working hard to support their family and contribute to the American economy. He’s here. He’s made his fortune. He want the gates closed, End of discussion.
Where would you draw the line on undocumented immigration then? I am sure there are a few billion Chinese or Indians that would love to come here for the freebies.
This “crisis” is nothing more then liberals flipping Texas blue. Once again every Conservative/ Republican vote is under fire from the liberal left who is proving yet again that it is the enemy.
Andy stop pointing fingers and do something to change this, Here’s an idea instead of running your mouth do your job.
Harris said “President Obama created this problem and now he should fix it”. Andy, you are so wrong. Apparently, all you know how to do is point your finger at President Obama and try to blame him on everything. Your childish behavior never fails to dissappoint many of your constituents! This problem has been around for MANY years, and no administration has been able to pass appropriate legislation to resolve it. The fact is, the overall numbers of illegals crossing our southern border has been REDUCED under the President Obama administration (when compared to the past few administrations). That is an undeniable fact that can’t be changed (look up the stats!). So instead of playing politics (like you always do), why do you (and your colleages in the House of Reps) act on President Obama’s proposed legislation, or come up with your own version that could pass both houses of congress. Now THAT would be something worth talking about Andy…..
The house doesn’t come up with a version that can pass both houses of Congress for the same reason that President Obama and the Senate doesn’t come up with a version that can pass both houses of Congress.
WTF,
No it has not been reduced and the current flood is the greatest illegal surge in our history. The border patrol is 40 miles back from the border. The bulk of the so called returned you speak of are caught and released with a promise to appear. I gather you are also unaware that ICE is no longer actively picking up criminals found to be illegals that are reported by local law enforcement.
Why do you think that we have criminal illegals with up to a dozen convictions that keep getting arrested? How about the illegal in Virginia that had two DWI’s and finally killed a nun driving drunk for the third offense. Fact is, you get in this country it is almost impossible to get you out.
And please tell me how amnesty is going to stop the invasion of illegals into this country? There is no border control at all. Any new law that further legitimizes border crossing will only bring more. Move the border patrol down to the border and put 10 thousand National Guard there. Stop all legal immigration until we catch up with those already here. Then and only then should we talk about new laws.
We should use the four thousand million dollars Obama wants for “his kids” and use it to seal the border. Mexico could use the billions of dollars we give them yearly in foreign aid to take care of them. Although the media goes out of it’s way to describe the illegals as children, many are in their late teens and early twenties. How many are gang members, terrorists or thugs, no one knows. Remember the Muriel boat lift when Castro emptied out his prisons and asylums and sent them to the U. S. A. ? The same could be happening again.
Governor Perry of Texas said we should stop this problem at its’ source. That source would be the countries of origin for these children. The economy and social problems in central America must be horrible for parents to part with their children, sending them to a foreign country unaccompanied to find a way to fend for themselves. Andy Harris, your solution is too simplistic. Ask yourself that if we just send them back what will happen next? More will come to take their place. And keep coming. Yes, they need to go back and be with their parents. But before they are sent back, give them the courtesy of due process, a good meal, a little health care and maybe some clean clothes. What would Jesus do?
As best as I can understand from the information at hand: it is not the 2008 law against the trafficking against minors, which is very specific, it is the ‘dreamers’ executive order which immediately started the flood. Also, the reason for the blanket against the media is that almost half of those crossing are males over 15 yrs. old, and in some cases males with grey hair claiming to be 18 yrs. old.
None of this is going to stop. Any location that starts to process them will end up in a nonstop situation. Carroll County is eventually going to carry an unbelievable financial burden in social services – let alone the cost of whatever burden the thousands of foreign males will bring to the area.
Best to just stop following the news and get the for sale signs out early.
Under Bush we got about 1000 of these kids a YEAR now we get up to 10,000 a MONTH! This is because Obama speaks of nothing but amnesty! And when the get here we give them free clothing, food, housing, medical care & transportation why wouldn’t they come? All they have to do is Vote Democratic and we take care of them for life.
If you had a 1-in-12 chance of being murdered in your home country, you would probably flee it for better conditions too. Yes something does need to be done, but sending them directly back home to horrible conditions…I don’t know if that is the answer. The Bush-era law is definitely not helping matters either.
Z,
Do you realize that if those stats were true they couldn’t fill a train with enough children to get here. A death rate of 1 in 12 is like being in the Dresden fire bombing. I am sure you read the information somewhere but the numbers do not add up. I would concede that it is probably as dangerous in Honduras as it is in Baltimore or Chicago (1 in 99 are a victim of violent crime in Chicago).
I heard those numbers from a reputable source on the radio, but maybe I misheard them. In any case, its still a terrible place to live and why would anyone just sit there and wait to become a victim, would you? I just dont get the attitude that this is our country, we took it far and square from the natives and now no one else can join? We all migrated here at some time, maybe not personally, but our ancestors did. These refugees want a better life just like we did.
Plenty of stories out there about American retirees flocking to Latin American countries because of the low costs of living, great medical care and wonderful weather. Makes you wonder why these folks want to make such a long dangerous trip all the way up to the USA. Why don’t they head south to Costa Rica, Panama, or Ecuador?
I have an idea Republicans can use, and you can wheel Dick Cheney out in his wheelchair to help promote it: Surely Sarah Palin and Ted Cruz would want to help this way also. BOMB MEXICO AND CENTRAL AMERICA. That will solve the problem, and make us feel good all at the same time.
Now a better solution would be to have a diplomatic offensive to solve the many issues between the U.S. and Mexico and Central America. Unless the tectonic plates shift, this is going to be a long term relationship for millions of years to come, so why not get started? We could propose a lot of things because there are a lot of issues to work on. Homeless children without a safe place is a serious problem. But it is a symptom of many underlying difficulties and we need to be more imaginative than simply shutting them out. Is it right that hundreds, maybe thousands of Latinos die trying to cross the deserts between the U.S. and Mexico? That is akin to sinking the boats that our own ancestors were on when trying to come to America for a better life. So wise, up, congressman Harris. And start being part of the solution, not the problem.
Thank you Harford County Democratic voters for not choosing this Boardman guy in the recent primary.
cb,
Hyperbole can prove a point, but your comments are off the charts. Okay, so you hate Palin and want to get in a slam, fair enough. Then you basically suggest that folks should work together and find solutions. But you really don’t mean that at all. What you mean is that folks who disagree with you are scum and if folks just agree with you, well, that is working together. You are so typical.
What is also so typical is that you can’t get your facts straight. There is no comparison between our ancestors – that came over here having to work to eat – and the folks who have come over here in the last 10 years or so – that have become wards of the government. Even the legal immigrants who come here have 50% getting social services. Those hording across the border now will either be completely wards of the government or – as perceived by the number of older males – part of the criminal element.
A better life for our ancestors meant working on farms, mines, canals and railroad tracks. A better life for the current illegal border jumpers is to be taken care of. I guess, though, with history being rewritten the struggles of the generations gone before are being washed away in the silliness of today’s political agenda.
“Undocumented immigrants currently contribute significantly to state and local taxes, collectively paying an estimated $10.6 billion in 2010 with contributions ranging from less than $2 million in Montana to more than $2.2 billion in California. This means these families are likely paying about 6.4 percent on average of their income in state and local taxes.
• Allowing undocumented immigrants to work in the United States legally would increase their state and local tax contributions by an estimated $2 billion a year. Their effective state and local tax rate would also increase to 7 percent on average, which would put their tax contributions more in line with documented taxpayers with similar incomes.”
http://www.itep.org/immigration/
Doesn’t come close to offsetting their cost to the taxpayer….
http://www.fairus.org/action/cost-of-illegal-immigration-at-the-state-level
ASK,
Love those folks at ITEP. They are famous for their numbers jockeying whereby they attempt to prove that high tax states outperform low and no tax states. Left wing organizations have no shame.
Anyhow:
Of course you realize this is left wing think tank speculation. But even if the numbers are true the administration is asking for about half that total number just to process the current border jumpers. Multiply that every few months and we are really in free fall.
Be that as it may, those speculative numbers are only for those working where the employer doesn’t just give them cash – or they are goods and services purchased with our tax money they get from us (and although the tax number may seem huge) – considering the massive drain on social services – it really doesn’t make a dent in the overall cost of housing, medical care, food stamps and education.
Big business wants cheap labor and democrats want voters. The rest of us foot the bill.
Maybe Uncle Jesse Bane will offer to house them in the detention center wing that sits empty. that is right up his liberal alley
Set them free on the streets of Westminster and let nature take its course. Everyone wins!
As long as the current immigration law isn’t changed, the problem will become incrementally worse. I am hopeful that the two parties can come together and stop the finger pointing as in this thread and actually deal with the issue without putting children as tokens for either amnesty or harassment as it seems to me that the are victims in all of this. Where is the leadership in both parties that can actually offer solutions or reach a compromise. It is the lack of any progress in keeping our house in order that allows these “coyotes” to extract money from desperate families thinking that sending your minor children is ok because current US law allows for the kids to stay. Not wanting to change the law because of fears of appearing weak and allowing some to gain legal entry is somehow immoral but somehow for decades the US has allowed people from other nations to show up at the gates with no problem.
Rocco,
The law is an excuse not a reason – it is a specific trafficking law. An executive order could send the national guard to the border and the border patrol could be moved up – since now they are 40 miles in the rear. Same thing could apply to cutting off funding to the countries that are sending their people here. It could be stopped in a week.
There is nothing congress can really do if the executive picks and chooses what to enforce. What good is any new law – especially since the power already lies within the executive branch to secure the border, which it has always had the means to do and never did.
The law is what the see as protection from immediate deportation and there are many a reason they are fleeing their countries– poverty, crime and lack of hope. Your reasoning a systematic way of looking at things and part of the problem–finger pointing between both parties isn’t solving anything. The fact is that the Obama administration has deported more people than the previous Bush administration. So is isn’t just lack of enforcement? The economic and political unrest in their homelands makes people do desperate things such as crossing desserts and risk life and limb searching for something better. Again, the crisis can only be solved by doing something–not by finger pointing and blaming the other party for it. This influx is happening because our immigration law allows it to happen and people are being told that if minor come by themselves that they can stay ( you can define it more as whatever) but these people are being used and charged $$$ for a “free ticket” to America. Many did it before as people Without Papers so it isn’t anything new or anymore underhanded than stow-away on a cruise ship, a sailor jumping ship or someone crossing the Canada border as well.
Rocco,
No, the current administration has not deported more people. That is a myth – along the lines that 8 million more people have health insurance under our new healthcare law. Our border patrol operates like a special trout fishing area – catch and release. The border patrol operates 40 miles behind the border.
And no, if a minor comes on their own does not mean they can stay. It isn’t the law. It is the unenforced laws that are the problem. The 2008 law has nothing to do with unaccompanied minors. It is a sex trafficking law. This has nothing to do with the preponderance of parents and children – or, young males 15 and older crossing the border. Have you seen the pictures of the trains? The top of the train is packed with young men.
They come here because of the ‘dreamers’ executive order that if they get here they can stay. It is just that simple. Whatever problems existed in Central America have been there for many, many years. It is only after the ‘dreamers’ order that they started to show up in droves. So, get off the persecuted people line – it just isn’t true that it was the cause of this problem. The executive branch caused it and they can stop it immediately.
I think you need to read independent news channels other than Fox TV. Your version of the cause and effect is totally one sided. It takes 2 branches of govt to make and enforce law as well as provide funding. I think if you actually listened to other sources of information, like BBC or other European news service you would have a better understanding of what is actually happening. Watching FOX TV is actually a disservice to the American public. Their coverage is too one sided to be corroborated by any other news organization.
Forbes and other outlets report 1.4 million deported so far under Obama and 2 million for Bush, per month the amount is higher for Obama and at that rate it would surpass Buch but still behind Clinton for the overall tally. Although other reports put Obama and Bush ahead of Clinton, partly because ICE no longer exists as the primary and Homeland Security is now in charge. Different administration have had their preferred way of handling this. Obama has been more apt to deport criminals of drug related than kids were Bush working with local communities was more targeted to the general population. The numbers pulled from different sources can give you different numbers but even conservative political pacs used Obama’s higher deportation numbers against Andy Reid in Nevada to unseat him by labeling Obama the “deporter in chief? See, these people are nothing but victims in the democratic and republican parties game of thrones.
The Border Patrol does conduct some operations 40-50 miles from the border, but they’re also patroling the border itself. The reason for the offset is that there are thousands of paths you could cross the border on, but only a few North/South highways to access the interior of the country. They set up checkpoints on those roads and examine everyone going North.
The unspoken problem that is driving a lot of this are the drug habits of so many Americans that they are funding the cartels that are making both Mexico and Central America danger spots for ordinary law-abiding families, as well as a menace to Americans on this side of the border. No one is addressing the root problems and the “solution” in most politicians’ minds is to build more and bigger fences and put more troops on the border. We need to reform a lot of things on both sides of the border. You can’t blame people for wanting to work and to live in an area where there is safety. It costs money to send the children back home and it costs to keep them in detention when they arrive, but the finger pointing is rampant in Congress. They want to blame Obama when they won’t undertake the least of reforms, immigration reform. But we need to do more. I say this because these people in another part of North America will remain our neighbors for millions of years. We took their lands when Mexico included Texas, California, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona. It was called military conquest–a bad word. But these people are not coming north with weapons and killing us; they just want to have a decent, safe life like the rest of us. What is the solution? Lots of diplomacy, eventually a super state of North America where people will be able to go anywhere on the continent because they will be citizens of a state encompassing the entire continent. We need the labor; these people are willing to work; our businesses need the projects to build and rebuild the infrastructures elsewhere. It will be an economic boon to everyone. That is a far-reaching goal. But go ahead and sneer at it. Yet the current policies are unproductive and they will continue to be as long as nothing is changed.
Super state of the continent? What did you smoke before you conjured up that gigantic wall of text?
CB,
“We took their lands” – Oh, one of those people are you?
Well, let’s see… we took it from the Spanish who took it primarily from the folks who believed in mass human sacrifice. Ugh, before that some folks crossed over during the ice age. I’m a little confused as to whom we should deed it all over to or how far south we should absorb as part of this country.
But really, why stop at a continent – aren’t we just citizens of the world?
the kids are from central America not Mexico. I am pretty sure that they don’t think USA is or was ever their land.
Yeah, we are citizens of the world, you did get that part right. And we spent a lot of our tax dollars tearing up Iraq and now you can see the results of that effort. Thomas Paine said, “the world is my country, all men are my brothers, and to do good is my religion.” He was one of those fanatics who supported and wrote for the American Revolution.
CB,
That quote is in reference to Paine viewing things as they exist without regard to who one is or where they were. It has nothing to do with a world governance – otherwise the British Empire would be part of his perceived country and he would be having a revolution against himself.
Paine also wrote, “Society is produced by our wants, and government by our wickedness.”
Rocco,
“Watching FOX TV is actually a disservice to the American public” Oh, you’re one of those that-there-fox-news-is-not-American folks. Well, they have been targeted publicly by the current regime. But no, I am not a Fox News follower. I really prefer the internet, from which you can actually read the government reports, foreign media including the BBC.
But regardless of one’s news source there are things that simply are because they are – and one example would be the responsibility of the different branches of government. Please be clear: it is the executive branch that enforces the law – that is why the department of Homeland Security, Border Patrol, ICE, DEA as well as the Justice Department and the FBI are all part of the executive branch. Congress only has oversight, which is why they can only plead with the executive branch to do something – like secure the freakin’ border. The executive branch can secure the border but chooses not to.
I don’t need Fox to tell me any of that but should you have had a proper class in governance you would have already known all that without me reminding you.
Finally, I believe I can safely post that your sources are lacking and you obviously bounce around to the same gaggle of leftest reinforcement. Perhaps you should try and expand your knowledge into the ‘dreamers’ executive orders and follow up directions that have led us to where we are now. I am certain you have no idea that ICE, via directive, released 68 thousand convicted criminal aliens back into the population – and of the few aliens that have been deported over the last couple years, since the ‘dreamers’ directive, most were serious felons only. An example would be that vehicular manslaughter does not count as a criminal alien.
Brush up on the facts.
@correct
Illegal entry into the country isn’t a felony or a crime prosecuted under local/state laws. It is a federal offense and usually leads to deportation, not a jail sentence. Just because you label someone illegal or criminal doesn’t mean anything, it serves to prove your bias towards them. We used to call them “without papers” which was more accepted by society as long as those without papers came from Europe, but as soon as they come from South America then they become criminals, illegal alliens or other more offensive terms. Your total lack of inability to see that both parties are responsible for the current situation leads me to believe that you drink the FOX news koolaid and don’t really have an understanding that most issues have more than one side and multiple factors go into the influx of people from South America, not just Obama and the Dream Act directive. Are you that simple that thinks that only one law/directive is responsible for this mess?? Is just blaming someone your end solution to it? You should run for Congress and you would fit it just fine!!
Rocco,
This really has to rank as one of the more ridiculous posts in this thread, laden with the usual chewed and spewed talking points.
“you label someone illegal or criminal” – talking head, talking point whereas those are federal government labels under the responsibility of the executive branch, which to date has failed in one of its primary responsibilities in securing the border and deporting illegals.
“long as those without papers came from Europe” – race card talking point.
“you drink the FOX news koolaid” – media talking point.
If you have something of substance please post it.
the only one jumping to conclusions is you. I didn’t raise any race cards. Hispanic is not a race, but white people do see it that way (i could be wrong but you are probably white as I am). You can dismiss my points and “label” them as something else, but there is quite a sentiment that if people were coming in droves from Canada, this would not be such a huge issue.
Rocco,
“but there is quite a sentiment that if people were coming in droves from Canada, this would not be such a huge issue.” – Did you get this information from the mothership? I don’t recall a poll or any mention or suggestion that this might be the case from anyone.
“I didn’t raise any race cards.”- Oh please, do you think I am stupid or do you think the folks who might read this thread are stupid?
I gather most crossing the border in this crisis are Mestizo – a cross between European and native Indian. But they are not white European, so your comment about being treated differently from Canada or Europe is playing the race card.
Oh great one dear Rocco, it is nice to know you are so well-informed. . ,
CB,
For sure, you guys are intellectually stitched at the hip.
Rocco,
I didn’t know coach Reid was running for anything – I gather you meant Harry. At any rate I would not hold too much credence to political ads as an example of fact.
Fact is, since the ‘dreamers’ directive deportations have ground to a halt. And, after all, we are discussing the current hoards coming across the border. And, even using your numbers Bush deported more – so stop posting otherwise. Wait and see what has really happened since the ‘dreamers’ directive – since that is the topic at hand.
Correct,
I stand corrected, Harry Reid is what I meant!. The dreamer’s directive doesn’t apply to these cases nor is the article here about the directive. You are right that the directive is being promoted as a “free entry” into USA by those bringing children and mothers into the country. The directive grew out of the inability of Congress to pass any meaningful legislation to our outdated immigration laws. It hasn’t just been the failure of the Obama administration but you can probably go back for decades as illegal immigration has always been a problem we just don’t seem to be able to manage proactively and we have a more reactive policy to try to manage the inflow of illegals mainly from the southern border. Bush deported more only because the Obama term is in its 6th year. Monthly amounts suggest that at the same pace, Obama will deport more illegals than Bush.
It would please me if the number of deportations done by Obama exceeded those of Bush by significant numbers. In fact, he could double or even triple the number and I would cheer him on!!! You go Obama, ship em back!
Obama is projected to deport about 2.4 million which isn’t double or triple. You are aware that our border is pretty large right? Of course, that is just a fraction of the one’s that do get in. It is expected that over 200,000 families with chidren will show up thinking that “permits” being sold to them by these coyotes are a way to get in legitimately. I have actually spoke with people in Honduras and they say that these smugglers have sofisticated campaigns in which they promote American law loopholes and these poor folks believe it. They are victims of deception and desperation in their countries and we are being affected. Doing nothing will only make the numbers go up much higher. The republican party is already using the request for additional funding as a political wedge. If they are willing to shut down the government, they surely are willing to let this crisis fester even longer. I dont see how the religious right will actually go along with this crisis in the long term. This could get real ugly since there aren’t enought judges to handle the thousands of deportation hearings and a new Guantanamo will be created to house these undocumented immigrants.
Prof,
It is nice that you claim some first hand knowledge. By what you post, the solution is quick and simple. First of all the 2008 law does not apply to people who pay someone to bring their child (I use that term lightly) to this country. Knowing what is going on should allow the administration to hold and return all those arriving under this circumstance.
The rest of the solution is all what the executive branch should do. Send the National Guard down to the border and have them accompanied by a sufficient number of boats. Move the Border Patrol down. You start stopping anyone from crossing by interdicting them and returning them to the Mexican border. You arrest any coyote aiding in bring them across.
You will not have to stop all that many. This will pretty much get the message out. But the final action is to let Mexico, Honduras and all South American countries know that if they don’t stop sending people here we will cut off their aid.
See, it is simple. All of these are actions that can be done by the administration without Congress. And, I would not give an additional dime to process those already here. I would let them stay in their environments they are in until we could get around to process them and then process them back where they came from. These are people that were paid to be brought here and take advantage of the situation. They are not refugees and many of them are older men pretending to be children.
I am the religious right. I say send them back. Send them back by the thousands. I say secure the border. If you think the real religious right is for having all these folks in our country who have not come here through the legal process then you are mistaken. I welcome legal immigrants. I do not welcome illegal immigrants.
send ALL of the border jumping criminals back to the land they came from
I dint want to hear about cartels going to kill them and all that BS, get rid of them NOW
and use the money and resources for real AMERICANS on our soil
entering the USA illegaly is an act of war and should be dealt with accordingly
Karn,
“examine everyone going North” – do you really, I mean really understand what you are posting.
When’s the last time you were in the SW? I’ve been there recently and every adult in the vehicle has to both verbally state and show physical proof (a driver’s license suffices) that they are in the country lawfully, plus get an occasional K9 walk-around, at the 50-mile checkpoints. They don’t care about the Southbound traffic, they won’t even have barricades or anything set up on that side of the road, just usually one car there in case someone crosses the median to run around the Northbound facility.
Karn,
You miss the point. The subject was border security. You indicated everybody is checked – however, everybody is not checked. If they were, there would be no drugs smuggled or illegals coming in. What they are doing is looking for lost keys under a lamppost because that is where the light is. It is silly beyond the pale to suggest that parking one’s butt on the major highways actually accomplishes anything of substance. If it did we would not be currently deluged with illegals and we would not have millions already here. And to suggest they actually patrol the border is also silly because an occasional drive-by is not a real patrol – if it were we would, again, not have millions here and millions more on the way. Whom are you trying to convince?
In most places of the SW, the only roads for 10-15 miles in any direction are those “major highways,” making them idea places to put checkpoints. Does CBP miss a lot of drugs? Yes. Do they miss a lot of illegals? Yes. But the 50-mile checkpoints have a very high return on investment by catching the ones that think they’re safe once they’re on the road.
I suppose we have check points every 100 feet or so? Or build a bigger fence or as others have suggested just shoot people as long as they look like foreigners. Of course you would have to make this law uniform and shoot all Hawaiians since they don’t look very American or Puerto Ricans as well. American Samoans or Asian Americans in San Francisco. To be fair though, we should move all whites to the original colonies and give back all the other taken lands, expect Alaska because the right owner sold that state to the USA. France sold parts of Mexico to the USA and Texas was overtaken from Mexico that’s why it is called the Lone Star State because the Union did not recognize it when they asked to join it. The point is that our country has evolved and it will evolve some more in the years to come. I know some while americans moving to Australia or New Zealand Antarctica I hear is pretty white too..
I think we’ve all seen the countless YouTube videos where people film themselves at these “Are you an American citizen?” Checkpoints.
I believe the Republican Party sees this as an opportunity to politicize the plight of these poor people. Demonize children and their moms– is that the American way? The religious right will have to deal with the consequences of their racial bias and faith that would offer compassion and care for the ill and poor. The TP is loving this fiasco as it only helps them energize their base. Illegales sign in Carroll County says it all. Hate mongering and increase the racial divide between English Americans and Hispanic Americans some more. There are estimates that if not enough judges are appointed to hear deportation cases that those caught may face a Guantanamo of their own in America. Wow, that will make our human rights record as comparable as China, Russia or Iran. Love America, but these politicians are ruining our good name.
Prof,
Actually no. You demonize. You seize upon this administration created tragedy to smear the political opposition. You totally fail to admit any responsibility for the executive branch – instead you sink to hate mongering. Your blind mud slinging is irrational to the point where a discussion is impossible. You can’t even get your arms around the fact that the situation in Honduras has existed for years – so why now? Why the problem now? You cannot accept the simple fact that this administration caused it with the ‘dreamers’ directives and could stop it with the National Guard and cutting off aid. All you want to do is blame others – the others you hate.
So, let us take a brief moment and look at a real world situation. I give you a news report from WFAA, Channel 8 in Parker County Texas (7/14):
A nine-year-old girl ran into her parents bedroom to escape a sexual assault from a 35 year old man. They tracked him down and found him in possession of some of her undergarments.
According to the sheriff’s office the man was Esrael Andrade, he had entered the country 30 days before with the influx of the children. Interestingly, he had been deported many times before when they were at least deporting criminals – but obviously not locking them up for a long time.
How could this happen? Only children are getting in – we must have sympathy – if we could only save one child: unfortunately, that doesn’t appear to apply to our own children in Texas or Carroll County.
This guy is a criminal not at child under the current situation. If the guy is a rapist then he should go to jail. American soldiers have also killed and raped women in Afghanistan and Iraq?? Crime happens and criminals should be locked up. You are now saying that all these people are rapists and pedophiles??? Protecting all children in our country should be a basic human right, not just reserved for those born here. If the are here they should be treated humanely and sent back after all laws have been followed including deportation hearings as provided by federal law. The Republican Party must authorize the needed funding to hire additional judges and open military facilities if needed to house those detained. 253 judges can not process 90,000 cases in an expedited manner. Follow the law and approve the requested funding!!!
Prof,
Sick man. Really sick – so now you are not satisfied to smear another political party you have to go after our military. Even crap would say that is crap.
The regime requested funding does nothing to stop the predators from coming in with the children. The borders must be secured first – any other funding only encourages more predators and you know it. Whose side are you on? I cannot believe you had to slam our military – especially since they are now watching the victory they gained in Iraq being given back – again, by this administration.
It is so funny but also so true: post long enough and you always find the real haters all hate the same thing. Sooner or later they get around to the military, because they simply hate what this country historically stood for. The old “truth, justice and the American way,” – really pisses them off.
I hate only stupid people that make the whole guilty by association–however minor to the few that committ these crimes. Your hyperbole is off the charts, I didn’t accuse of military of anything but proved the point that it only takes one soldier to muddle everyone. The same with these immigrants, so it is up to all of us to recognize the humanity in them first and treat them with respect and send them back propertly.
Prof,
Stop pretending that people cannot read. First you post, “American soldiers have also killed and raped women in Afghanistan and Iraq??” And now you are down to “it only takes one soldier to muddle everyone.”
That is a feeble attempt to walk back your slam. If you want to maintain some credibility please list the multiple rapes commented in those countries. You did say “soldiers” plural, so you must have some collection of rapes and murders – followed by all the military prosecutions, unless you would like to add that the military allowed and condoned them.
Your idea to “recognize the humanity” is to wrap your inner hatred in some sort of phony sanctimony. You don’t really care how many young male criminals cross the border, you don’t care about the impact on the small communities. You just think that people in this country have enjoyed some type of privilege and now it’s time to pay up.
I am pretty sure there has been more than one rape in two wars in the past ten years. I didn’t say murders but there have been many questionable deaths in both countries and rapes. There was a story a few months ago about a soldier snapping and killing off a whole family while he was off duty. So it happens… It is funny how you know my intentions and the meaning of what I say and what I stand for. Please tell me the lotto numbers so I can go play?
Prof,
This is sinking into outright humor.
Let’s see: “American soldiers have also killed and raped women in Afghanistan and Iraq??” – was your post. And now it’s sort of, somewhat, “I am pretty sure there has been more than one rape.”
So, you really know nothing and have nothing of substance to back up your slam except your inner predisposed hatred that you’re “pretty sure” our military has been raping and murdering (plural) because, after all, that is what they usually do – according to you.
Yes, I do know your intentions because you trowel out your sludge for all to read. And that piddly-crap about the lotto may impress your no thinking friends but all I can think of is that you have run out of gas.
Abu Ghraib prison comes to mind. Well documented rapes of women and prisoners by USA National Guard. There are many other as a quick internet search can provide. do you need video evidence? You Tube lists some but I wouldn’t want to post that here. What I said has happenned in enough instances to make it more than one.
You can love your country and still accept the fact that our soldiers have also committed criminal activities. Just like you can be against illegals and still feel some humanity and compassion towards them. But to you as long as the heart beating is American, then nothing can ever be wrong!!
@incorrecto mondo
You just got owned! take it like a TP member
Prof/Tickle,
Since you are probably the same person let us deal with some stuff:
First we go current because all over the news (I picked it up at HUFF PO because I read various opinions).
Pedro Alberto Monterroso-Navas crossed the border with the current surge of illegals, was processed and released. He was processed in the McAllen station of the U.S. Border Patrol. The alien’s registration number is 202027386. The event number for his apprehension is MCS14061487. The “MCS” designates the McAllen station, the “1406” designates that the man was apprehended in June of 2014. A separate Border Patrol source confirmed that the man was apprehended on June 26, 2014 with two children he claimed were his own.
He summarily just bludgeoned a woman to death in a bathtub.
Now, you brought up the military as an excuse for what is happening now. As I have posted, I think that is despicable. Abu Ghraib had 11 convictions and I believe we have one in Afghanistan. There are also quite a few fake terrorist vids on line but I jumped out of those – why do I want to link my IP up with that trash. You can indulge all you want.
I will not deny the humiliation at Abu Ghraib. But when you say “soldiers” I see a broad brush condemning all of those fine men and women being put into harms way, having their limbs blown off and coming back to crappy treatment at the VA.
Any comparison of our military to the catch and release of anybody and everybody at our border is wrong. Especially since it is so preventable. If you want to talk about owning something how about your buddies in the administration owning up to the mess and immediately fixing it.
@correct
I respect our honorable military just not those whom brought shame to the flag. Raping women and killing innocent children isn’t something to defend no matter who is doing it and under whose flag it may be. I brought it up because you needed “proof” as if I made these statements in a vacuum or made them up. Don’t ask stupid questions and you won’t get smacked down again.
I don’t know tickle about tickle.
when I said soldiers I mean more than one! Didn’t know the english language was so complicated. I didn’t use military abuses as a excuse but more as a counterpoint to labeling groups something because an illiegal allien committed rape, doesn’t mean all are committing rape. I don’t think our military goes around raping people either. Your problem is either your reading comprehension or you are responding on an emotional level. I do believe that most people do react on a visceral level after all they see on TV is Hispanics but actually Mexicans, mostly crossing the border. Most latinos do not consider themselves hispanic and the term isn’t used to describe a culture or a nationality. Leave to the US Census to confuse hispanic americans into thinking they belong to a particular race. People from Spain are white and people from Mexico are a mix of white and mostly indian. In fact most Puerto Ricans and Argentinians are mostly white, same can be said for Cubans whom arent that intermixed among each other. Another lesson for you, but I guess I will have to “prove” it as well. Such is my life, to teach.
Prof,
“I do believe that most people do react on a visceral level after all they see on TV is Hispanics but actually Mexicans, mostly crossing the border” – So now it’s back to race again.
Speaking of mental forensics, can you actually make a post without bashing the military, bringing up race or finding a way to interject Guantanamo.
And, I guess I should thank you for finally qualifying your position on the military. Again, when you say “American soldiers” in reference to basically three wars and two theaters it demands better clarity when you accuse them of such crimes.
I guess one man’s counterpoint is another man’s excuse making. Seems to me like you are splitting a hair that has already been split.
Prof,
You didn’t smack anybody down. You made an all encompassing statement about our military as cover for the administration letting in criminals with the children – you are both wrong and despicable. I asked for a collection and you came up with Abu Ghraib. We fought two wars in Iraq and a continuous conflict
in Afghanistan. I don’t see this as a collective behavior of our military – and it has no business in this discussion. But if you want to see horror pictures consider the burned bodies of our boys hanging from the bridge in Fallujah. Or, to be more recent, consider the look on the nine-year-old girl running from the criminal alien let into this country. I see where you passion lies, it just isn’t with the military or the children of our own citizens. Smack? I think not – but perhaps to your alter ego tickle pickle it is.
Be that as it may, I am not going to let you change the subject of the thread as an ongoing military bashing – in that you continuously make over-arsing statements like, “a new Guantanamo will be created to house these undocumented immigrants.” Does this clarify your fringe focus or what?
@ciorrect
Please allow yourself for a moment to come out of your box and actually concede that today’s inaction may have dire consequences going forward. I am ore than willing to recognize that protecting a nation’s borders is an integral part of what makes a nation sovereign. We as a nation/government need to decide how to go about dealing with our internal and external challenges. We are not going back to an isolated society. People come by land today and soon to be followed by sea or air. Our immigration and process is cumbersome, complicated and full of loopholes that lets some either for political reasons or historical events jump ahead of the line and lets other due to lack of education, geographic and political reasons not really have an equal shot to enter the country legally. The economic facts are that there are jobs here for those crossing the border and we have laws that aren’t being followed (lack enforcement action and punishment) American employers have not been fined, charged or shut down by hiring illegals. The whole enforcement action is lacking and even the IRS is complicit by issuing special tax numbers to those without a Social Security Card which would be most without documentation. You can blame Obama but the facts show that many other previous administrations and previous legislative bodies have not dealt with the issues at hand. I am not splitting anything, I think if you actually read through my statements I did not accuse our military (those that represent, defend and show our good values) but don’t ask for a blank check of approval for those that committed heinous crimes and bring shame to our country. I am against illegal entry into the country but let’s deal with the situation at hand without the hyperbolic sentiment that all are bad criminals. The recent plane that left for Honduras with returned citizens there included mostly moms and children. Maybe some kids aren’t minors but most were minors. One mom said that she will do it again as staying in Honduras means certain death to her child. Our nation should help these countries as we have spent billions in aid to countries that would attack America but no though of helping those around us that will eventually show up at our door step if we don’t do something more holistic than building the biggest fence because a ladder just as big can be built to climb it.
