HARFORD COUNTY, MD (April 22, 2015) – Luis Colon, Jr. (20) plead guilty in Harford County Circuit Court today to charges of 1st Degree Arson and 2nd Degree Assault.
Colon received multiple arson related charges after investigators determined he was responsible for intentionally burning down a makeshift homeless structure located behind the New Hope Christian Fellowship of United Methodist Church located at 2048 Watergate Court in Edgewood.
The incident originally occurred on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at approximately 8:00 p.m. A joint investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Harford County Sheriff’s Office revealed Jose Martinez (47) and Raul Espinoza (47) resided in two makeshift structures behind the church. Investigators were told that Luis Colon, Jr. held Raul Espinoza at gun point while he set fire to the structure belonging to Jose Martinez. Colon then threatened Raul and ran off of the premises. No weapon was found after an extended search. Damage estimates to the personal property of Jose Martinez was valued near $500.
The results of his plea agreement are as follows: 15 years imprisonment with all but two years suspended with five years probation on the 1st Degree Arson charge, five years imprisonment with five years suspended on the 2nd Degree Assault charge. Colon is being detained at the Harford County Detention Center for the remainder of his two year sentence minus 391 days already served.
