UPDATED: Edgewood Murder Suspect Attacked after Arrival at Detention Center

October 4, 2010 By Aaron Cahall 32 Comments

The alleged killer of an Edgewood teen was attacked by several inmates shortly after his arrival at the Harford County Detention Center’s maximum security wing on Sunday, authorities said.

Michael S. Jones Jr., 18, of Edgewood, was attacked by several prisoners Sunday afternoon in the day room of the maximum security unit. He was arrested Sunday on charges of first and second degree murder, first degree assault, and use of a handgun in a violent crime for the shooting death of Shakir D. Wingate, 16, of Edgewood.

Corrections officers broke up the fight after approximately four minutes, according to Monica Worrell, public information officer for the Harford County Sheriff’s Office.

Jones was transported to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, where doctors diagnosed him with a detached retina and a possible fractured skull. He was transferred to the University of Maryland Medical Center’s Shock Trauma Center, where he was treated and returned to the Detention Center early Monday. He is currently being held in isolation.

Worrell said Tuesday that Jones was not identified by the sheriff’s office as a gang member or gang affiliate. Jones did not identify his attackers and “could not provide investigators with any reason he thought he was attacked,” Worrell said in an e-mail. The sheriff’s office was in the process of identifying his attackers, and charges are pending.

When Jones was initially incarcerated at the detention center, Worrell said he underwent a standard classification process to determine in which unit he would be housed. During that process, she said he “did not address that he had a problem with anyone incarcerated at the detention center,” did not fear any other inmates, and was not a member of a gang.

However, Worrell said that results of a preliminary investigation have led the sheriff’s office to believe that Jones and his attackers may have had prior knowledge of each other before the incident.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Jones was arrested Sunday  at his home, a short distance from where Wingate was found shot multiple times in his vehicle Saturday night.

The two youths were familiar, Worrell said, and while both “ran in rough circles,” the killing did not appear to be connected to any gang affiliation.

“These two young men were known to each other,” Worrell said. “They may have had beef with each other…that’s what we’re circling in on right now.”

Jail is tough and getting tougher and fuller, to many of our young men and women fill or prison system, we need to do more to educate them before they get to this stage it all starts at the home. Parents we need to take back our SEEDS from the evil one and give them back to the holy one. Our youth just wants to be loved and to be part of a family they just don’t know how to go about it. what do people think when they hear your children names?

      (JEREMIAH 29:11)
FOR I KNOW THE THOUGHTS THAT I THINK TOWARD YOU, SAYS THE LORD THOUGHTS OF PEACE AND NOT OF EVIL, TO GIVE YOU A FUTURE AND A HOPE.

Where is the great Democrat Jesse Bane? Oh – he must be out at a Community Meeting telling the old folk how good a job he is doing under such tough circumstances.

Where should he be? At the Jail, doing tours? In your sectors, doing traffic stops? I can’t wait for union endorsements to go public so the community can see who the majority of both unions want for their next Sheriff.

No, he is too busy hiring representatives for the Department who, like Ms. Worrell, find it professional to use street slang like “beef” in an official statement.

Professionalism, or lack thereof, reflects directly on leadership.

Jesse Bane is a Liberal Dem that allows the Union to walk all over the Department and the Taxpayers. I’d be surprised if he didn’t receive the Union’s endorsement.

BTW – the public is a little tired of municipal unions crying poor. The Sheriff’s budget has increased $19 million or 50% under Jesse Bane’s leadeship with little to show for it.

During Sheriff Bane’s administration, The Deputies got up to an 18% raise. That was just to make the HCSO competitive with other agencies. However, that raise was in the works during the Golding administration. In order for the raise to go though he had to increase and gain support for his budget. Ha added needed supervision patrol. Hopefully he will continue to make promotions where and when they are needed.

          That’s for starters.

          Rebuttal?

Rebuttal – where would you like to start.

Taxpayers love union cops sleeping on the job with the radio off. The truth will be told.

18% raise – are you kidding me? Where in the private sector are middle class Americans getting that kind of increase.

Budget increase from $44 million to $63 million and ooops I forgot I had to Fund an expanded jail.

Hiring people like Forwood – huge salary – not ready for the job – clearly lacked the experience – OH and by the way – a THIEF!

BB, if you want to live in Mayberry, where the cops make less than the garbage men, then move to Western Maryland. I have a feeling that you will have issues with whoever wins the race.

People want services…..Maybe we should do it for free.
Got to house those criminals…..Take them to BigBlue’s house.

I’m not all that worried about Forwood eaither. Kharma is a real Meffer.

Just like the raises, the jail expansion has been in the works for the past several years.

If you want to talk real issues, throw them out there, other than that, your arguments are pretty meh….

            BlueBull,

You need to think outside your little union cop box. The County population maybe increases 15,000 or 6% in 4 years and the Police Department Budget increases 40% from $44 Million to $63 Million with little to no improvement in crime statistics. Thats not a return that the Taxpayers deserve.

Oh and by the way, in the real world, we taxpayers like to call it the “private sector”, promotions don’t occur just “because”. There needs to be a need for that position. We just don’t promote people to unneeded positions so we can feel good and give them a nice big raise. In the private sector – people are accountable because there isn’t an unlimited supply of Tax Dollars like you have in your “public sector”.

As far as Cops being underpaid. Get real – too many of them living in fat houses in this County for me to buy that. You can tell because they have their take home cars in the driveway. Don’t forget to add in their pensions and benefits. Floyd, thats a far cry from Mayberry.

Tell ya what – I’m gonna give you some time to respond. Go read some basic economics or maybe thumb through the WSJ.

I dont know what wall street journal u are reading but last time I looked a lot of businesses are being bailed out by OUR taxes and yet bonuses are still being paid. Police over the years have been underpaid especially in Harford county because there was low crime. A lot of times we work a lot of OT to afford that BIG house u say we live in. As for teachers I never seen a butch of cry babies like Harford County residents complain about teachers pay. Once again Harford County teachers like the sheriffs dept. are one of the lowest paid compared to other counties and yet the schools are one of the best in the STATE AND COUNTRY. Also Harford county is still one of the safest communities in the state due to the police who keep the low lifes contained. We dont put them away that is the judges job. If u have a beef go tell Plitt and Waldren. They are the judges in the county for your FYI. And No I am not a deputy.

BB I’m not a cop. Sorry to disappoint you, however I do work for the Sheriff’s Office. Where I work, we have been, looked over for promotions, understaffed, over worked, underpaid, overpopulated, and put in extremely dangerous situations.
Your right, I could quit my job, but I’ve got news for you, NO one is beating the doors down to work in a jail.
Since playing with numbers seems to be your games, research county growth and increases to the sheriff’s office budget over the last 20 years.
As far as living in huge houses, some of them do. I have a pretty modest lifestyle. I’m guessing you want us to be broke and forced to live the rust belt?

Are you serious – the Sheriff’s budget increased $19 Million? No wonder our property taxes increased at 9% a year and Harford County has one of the highest tax rates in the state.

Sounds like we need a new Sheriff and a new County Executive.

@Frank – ok, let’s take the money back from the sheriff’s office so you can have a few extra dollars left in your bank account come December. And when you call 911, I hope they don’t answer your call.

Do you really think police do not deserve a raise? It is a dangerous job. What do you think their base salary is? They deal with punks every day and put their lives in danger. Police, Firefighters, Teachers……..they are all way underpaid. Do you think someone sitting on their butt behind a desk deserves that kind of pay increase?

Getting back to the real news here…….. these punks should get worse then a detached retina. I hope they give him what he really deserves the next time.

I’ll tell ya what. You can pay the Cops as much as you’d like out of your taxes. Deputies that don’t think that they are paid enough can find another job. There are plenty Baltimore City Officers that would step into a Deputies uniform quick enough.

Harford County Law Enforcement Deputy $42,973
        Harford County Corrections Deputy $39,166
