Pigskin Prognosticating: Take A Stab At Picking NFL Winners Week By Week

September 4, 2008 By Molly 327 Comments

“Hit, Hustle, Believe.” A phrase I read on a tattered tee on one of the coaches for the Joppatowne-Edgewood Recreation Football team. Hit. Hustle. Believe. If only it were that simple.

Through the eyes of Ravens’ fans we have only one of those resources available to us: Believe. Sure we can hit Steelers fans with our venomous words and we can hustle with vigor through our chants to Baltimore’s pride, Dee-Fense (clap, clap); De-Fense (Clap, clap) but to believe?

Yeap. That’s what we’ve got to try and wrap are arms around. Believe that our rookie quarterback from Delaware, Flacco is going to trigger some offensive explosion? Who is this Todd Bowman anyway since Boller is out and Smith is well…skinny and still ailing (get better Troy!)? How long can we bank on Stover as our only gem on the scoreboard? Are we to Believe that our secondary is healthy and it’s game on for them? Where is Ed Reed? Are we to Believe that our new young coach John Harbaugh, who ran a hard-hitting camp compared to Billick, is going to work miracles and orchestrate a winning record? Believe that our o ffensive line has regained its’ footing without our very first draft pick J.O?

Sheesh! That is a lot to ask even from the most ardent fans. Hopefully we can at least enjoy our growing pains as we watch the football fates unravel. So with things looking somewhat gloomy, we always have one thing that can get us by. What is that?

Well, we can always take pride in our trash-talking. And I mean the good, clean kind. Who doesn’t like lambasting the Steelers (Carlin, Adam it is on…any other Steeler fans want to go?)

Welcome to Pigskin Prophesy, Daggerstyle. This will be an interactive forum to ta lk up the local homers and talk “down” to the scabs. In addition, I’m going to take out my mystical crystal ball laced with deep purple and take a stab at picking winners. All of them. I hope you’ll join me.

In spite of what you might think, there is no science, and often-times no reasoning behind picking football winners. No football team is ever guaranteed to bring home the win. Remember the recent SuperBowl? You don’t have to devote ten plus hours a week on getting into Tom Brady’s psyche or studying the lines. In fact, I strongly encourage you NOT to pay any attention, it’ll be more fun for everyone else that way. Go with your instincts.

So, if you think you’ve got the BALLS, please join me. At the end of the season, the person with the most wins, wins. You will be crowned King or Queen of=2 0Dagger’s inaugural Pigskin Prophesy.

Rules, no rules. Pick one game, pick all games. Play every week, play when you want. Obviously you’ll have a better shot at bringing home the crown the more you participate. Bring your smash-mouth game all the time though, play or not.

FYI: It’s never too late to join in on the fun. Don’t be shy…football gods are open and loving to both Democrats and Republicans.

Leave you picks in the comment section, and we will tally up the leaders each week.

    Whoops! I hate Thursday games.

Any time I have a chance to pick against the lowly Redskins, hell yeah, I am taking it…New York Football Giants, The deadskins are my second most fave team to root against.

Anyone ever go to Washington’s Stadium? I’ve been there once and it was a joke!

I had occasion to be in the RalJon area for a week last winter, taking a class. The class sponsor advised us the best place to stay in the area was “as far away from the area as you can.”
    We stayed in Bowie.

I was positive that watching some football last night would allow me to stay jazzed up long after the final gun, primed to watch the big speech by John McCain.
Unfortuately for me, it was a snorefest after halftime! Is it just me, or did that look like another preseason game?
The (Dead)Skins looked flat, Campbell looked like a rookie who had never taken a snap.
So much for worrying about how the Giants’ D-Line would react to the loss of Umenyiora for the year. They were the sharpest unit on the field.

    Mike’s picks for week 3

Well, week 2 is in the books. Here is what I think about week 3

Falcons – Matt Ryan Redeems himself infront of the home crowd

Bills – They are on a roll. Oak’s win last week was a result of KC having no game tape on McFadden

Bears – Its called “soldier field” for a reason.

Panthers – Steve Smith comes back and makes an immediate impact. Gus Freotte……

Cheatriots – They own the fish. And this game is in Foxborro

    Giants – The Bengals lol

Texans – They come off an early bye week. Titans have Kerry Collins. (a stretch I know but I don’t see Collins as a solid QB)

Cardinals – Old man Warner defeats the 4skins in DC. In my opinion Zorn doesn’t have a clue how to be a head coach and we will see it this weekend

Broncos – This is Jay Cutlers break out season. Drew Brees…… not so much

Lions – This is a toss up because both teams are amazing (not)

Seahawks – I chalk this one up to home field advantage. Playing in Seattle is no joke

RAVENS – The Doo Doo Brownies come to town. This year the Ravens don’t have scrubs in the secondary AND this year the Browns don’t have a defense (well thats every year). Bazooka Joe comes out and lights it up infront of the home crowd once again.

Jags – Peyton (I cry when I am sacked) Manning hasn’t been himself this season. The Jags need a win big time. This ones hard but I am calling for an upset.

Eagles – I will say it here. The ketchup drinkers are Over-Rated. This is the case EVERY year with the media. They talk up the steelers big time (but look who they have beaten). Did you not see that MNF game this week? The Eagles WILL score points on this over rated team from the Hills. Can Pittsburgh actually manage more then 10?

Cowboys – They are the team to beat right now. If Romo could just get his act together they actually would be blowing teams out of the water.

Chargers – I don’t see the Brets flying to the west side and beating the chargers in their house.

Best record this week: Joel comes in with a stunning 13 wins! Nice job Joel.
Dell snuck in with 11 (Sweet Dell) while seven others tied with 10 wins (Liza, Cindy, Colleen, Neil, JoBeth, Mike and Carlin) Meanwhile the emcee (yours truly) of this event, is still sucking the pigskin, beating out only people who have skipped a week of play…However, my Ravens aren’t sucking though!!! And those Steelers certainly bit the dust this week.

31 wins: (NOTE: number in parenthesis is weekly record)
    Dell (11)
    Colleen (10)

    28 wins:
    Neil (10)

    Jacksonville
    Denver
    New Orleans
NY Jets (playing at home, they can eek this one out)
    Green Bay
    Tennessee
    San Diego
Buffalo (squeaked by Oakland but the Rams look like they are starting Trent Green so I have to go with the Bills)
    Dallas (band wagon jumper here)
    Philadelphia

Gather ’round kiddies! Without much further procrastination, here’s week 4 prognostication:
CIN- since it’s unlikely an asteroid will crash into the stadium, somebody has to win.
    JAC
    CAR
DEN- the Chiefs are bad. Very bad.
    NO
GB- The battle of the bays on the Frozen Tundra of Ray Jay Stadium!!
    TEN
    SD
BUF-they might not lose a game all year, a’la the 07 Pats
    DAL
    PHI
PIT- I’m still a homer, but the Stillers are 13-0 at home on Monday Night Football.

And, the Lead Pipe Lock o’ the Week, brought to you by Anita Bath’s Saddlery and Baked Goods- Just a gallop, trot, and a canter off exit 32A in the Palace Verde Shopping Emporium: Cards over the J-E-T-S Jets! Jets! Jets!

I need to rethink my strategy here, I don’t want to be the biggest loser in this game. Maybe I need a bye week?

    This week’s games:
    ARIZ @ NYJ
    MIN @ TENN
    DEN @ KC
    SF @ NO
    ATL @ CAR
    CLE @ CIN
    GB @ TB
    HOU @ JAX
    BUF @ STL
    SD @ OAK
    DAL @ WASH
    PHIL @ CHI
    PIT @ BALT

    Go Ravens, Go Bills…

For the record, Adam (Pit) and I (Bal) have a side bet going on Monday night: the loser of the game has to write a pristine game recap. My Ravens don’t always perform well on MNF so I’m holding my breath. If I have to write one word in praise of the Steelers I might get ill.

Molly-I’d stick to a pretty bland diet this weekend, then.
Like I said, I’m as much of a homer as the next guy, but, this would probably go down right next to the Oregon State-USC upset if the Ravens can go into the big Ketchup Bottle and eek out a W.
Like Rick Maese said in the Sun today:

“A win this week and they’ll start building a Joe Flacco statue outside of M&T Bank Stadium.”

Looks like I wasn’t the only one sitting bleary eyed in front of a TV at 0000-something hours last night. A loss is a loss, but there were some positives to take away from the MNF game last night.
Flacco looked OK, given the circumstances. Can anybody honestly say they didn’t think the game was over when the Ravens were down by 7 in the second half?
Last years edition’s offense wouldn’t have had a prayer of tying that game.
The O-line gets a “B-“. They protected well, and gave Joe some time to look downfield.
There was zero running game from either team. That field is a travesty. If I had to guess, they must have “treated” the turf with about 100,000 gallons of water yesterday before the game. With two teams sharing that field full time, when will they switch to an artificial surface?
A loss is a loss indeed. But, it will sure make for an interesting rematch when we get them in our house.

Who is hot? MBQ topped out with 11 big ones. SWEET Picking, MBQ.
After a bye week, Brian came in strong with a whopping 10 w’s.
Next up was Beefaroni, Cindy (I noticed the usage of all the teams nicknames, you go girl!!!) and yours truly with 9 smackeroonies.

Who is not? Dusty had a rough one, punching in with only five wins. Ouch! Don’t sweat it Dusty, I only won six last week out of a lot more games… I feel your pain.
And remember these famous words: “The race goes not always to the swift- but to those who keep running…”
Colleen takes sole possession of first place and she doesn’t even watch football! Let’s get her.

    39 wins
    Colleen (8)

    Dell (7)

    36 wins

Miami (yep, that’s right, Miami, an no I’m not smoking Rickys stash)
    Ny Giants
Washington (really a toss up with injuries on both sides, but Skins are in groove)
    Denver
Arizona (might be a bonehead pick but stranger things have happened)
Dallas (as long as TO shuts up)
    New England
    Jacksonville
New Orleans (EJ Henderson is hurt and that puts a whole one the linebackers)

ON FIRE: RWinger notched in 10 wins- your Arizona and Miami picks were right on! You were blessed by the football gods! Way to go…
LOSING STEAM: Neil and Colleen, that’s right first place Colleen, stunk it up and were only able to muster up four wins apiece. That smarts….
Don’t sweat it though, it is a long season.

Dell takes over first place (for now)…you know what they say- everyone is gunning for the top dawg! (Dell I thought Flacco looked real good on Monday night, considering…not so much Sunday though. I expected him to look like he did on Sunday on the road at the Steelers Monday night, but that’s just me.)

Joel (9) way to bring the bad juju to Arizona, no more traveling with the Bills!
    Liza (8) Oh yeah!!!

    37 W’s
    Brian Y (7)

    27 W’s
    Steve (6)

    32 W’s
Neil (4) not good coming off of a bye week, baby….

Out of commish: Beefaroni (24), JoBeth (21), Adam (17), Mike (10)

Molly- Here’s my take on Joe Lunchbox. He was asked to do too much late in the game Sunday, with some conservative “play not to lose instead of play to win” strategy by Harbaugh and Cameron.
When they were steamrolling the Browns, and controlled the ball for 13 minutes in the 4th Quarter, he was given a lot of manageable down-and-distances (3rd and 3, 3rd and 2). On the drive that ultimately killed them Sunday, they ran two very Billickesque plays that put them in a 3rd and 7, and Joe couldn’t connect to make the first down.
He’s not yet become the guy that can carry the team on his shoulders and put teams away late. That has to come from the running game and the defense (who, lets face it, let Kerry Collins take over the game in the 4th quarter).
Anywho, after limping into the lead with only 7 wins this week, here are my WEEK 6 picks:
CHI- “Mr Ryan, meet Mr Urlacher.” Mr Ryan-“OUCH.”
MIA- single wing, gadget plays, hooka pipes? I’m on the bandwagon baby!
IND- still a homer, but the Ravens secondary was exposed by Collins last week.
MIN- “the Detroit Lions are on the clock.”
NO- Al Davis still can’t remember the name of his interim head coach
NYJ- Ocho Cinco still muy stinko
    TB
WAS- it pains me like few other things to pick the ‘Skins, but they’re playing STL.
    DEN
DAL- the ‘boys D will remind Kurt Warner’s wife that he’s an old man
    PHI
SEA- 12th Man pummels Aaron Rodgers
    NYG

And the Lead Pipe Lock o’ the Week, brought to you by Madame Han’s Happy Ending Day Spa, just behind the Piggly Wiggly at the intersection of I-40 and Snakeskin Hollw Road: Chargers over the Patriots!

Atlanta (at home, Ryan, and I plain old don’t like da’ Beers)
Miami (was going with Houston but I’m hooked on trick plays)
Indy (at home and maybe Marvin’s timing is now in sync)
    Minnesoata (enough said)
    New Orleans
    NY Jets
    Carolina
Washington (who’da thunk it….riding the tide)
    Denver
    Dallas
Philadelphia (it’s becomed desperation time, they can make the win happen)
Seattle (why not, ugly uniforms and all)
New England (don’t like the Pats but my braggin’ rights are on the line)
NY Giants (no brainer in my book)

Brutal week, upsets abound. (That excrementitious (excrement) game in Indy was not one of them, however it sure was embarrassing. I just don’t care if this sentence makes sense or not, I’ve been jonesing to use the word excrement in some way because that game was crap!)

Out of the 13 people who played, eight of them had less than spectacular showings, going .500 or below. Not one person picked Cleveland. Only one picked Ariz- nice Steve! On a brighter note though, Dell’s lead pipe pick of the week was bank for a change!

ON FIRE: Brian Young, league leading 10 wins! Brian, you picked a good week to come out kicking. Props to Beefaroni and Joel for packing in a nine-spot.

LOSING STEAM: Liza, you’re faith was you’re crutch! Or so some have told me so I’m spreading the love. You only reeled in a three bag, but consider that this was a tough week all around.

Here you go, football daggers, this is where we stand: (as always, check my work, I am not responsible for any lost or stolen luggage)

    51 wins:
    Colleen (8)
    Dell (6)

    49 wins:
    Carlin (7)

    48 wins:
    Dusty (7)

    47 wins:
    Brian Young (10)
    Joel (9)

    44 wins:
    RWinger (6)
    Molly (5) YUCK!!!

    41 wins:
Liza (3) I feel your pain, sister!!!

    37 wins:
    Neil (5)

    33 wins:
    Beefaroni (9)

    32 wins:
    Steve (5)

    24 wins:
    Adam (7)

Bye week for: MBQ (43), Cindy (40), JoBeth (21), Mike (10)

Still all kinds of football left to be played, daggers, so BRING IT!!!

No Dell, please don’t do that! It’s like a slam dunk for us- to go opposite! Plus, that will change all of the good juju you send out to all of us players. I love it when people go out on a limb-

Perhaps I need a week at Madam Han’s Happy Ending Day Spa, just behind the Piggly Wiggly at the intersection of I-40 and Snakeskin Hollow Road.
A little rehab, that’s the ticket!

Don’t be a hater, Playas. Lots of winning going on this time around, that’s for certain.

Who’s HOT: Can you believe we had three people who came in strong with 12 w’s? 12. Amazing job, Colleen, Beefaroni and MBQ. Cindy, also came in on fire after having an off week, picking up 11 w’s. MBQ and Cindy- no more bye-weeks for you guys!

Who’s LOSING STEAM: Dusty and Liza (sorry darling- speedy recovery to YOU!)
are the only ones to register below the .500 mark, tallying up 6 paltry w’s. Hang in there guys, lots more football to be played. And yes, I do believe the loser who participates in all but one (allowing one bye-week) week should be awarded a booby prize! And I’ve got the perfect idea!!!

Here you go, people: And by the way, if you pick against your team you have no soul!!! NO SOUL! You know who you are and so do I.

    63 wins
    Colleen (12!!!)

    60 wins
    Dell (9)

    57 wins
    Brian Young (10)

    55 wins
    MBQ (12!!!)

    54 wins
    Joel (7)
    Dusty (6)

    53 wins
    Molly (9)

    51 wins
    Cindy (11!!)
    RWInger (7)

    47 wins
    Liza (6)

    45 wins
    Beefaroni (12!!!)

    44 wins
    Neil (7)

    42 wins
    Steve (10)

    31 wins
    Adam (7)

Off week: Carlin (49), JoBeth (21)- where are you? Get in the game! Mike (10) hello- don’t be a quitter!!!

As always, feel free to check my work! Good luck next time…

I am resisting the urge to wait until Colleen makes her picks. I have to make up some ground anyway. I’ll settle in while I dial up some old Mike Peters and the Alarm on the iPod:
Once you held the secrets of the world within your hands
Now you’re just another grain of sand
    Once you were the first
    Revered to the last
Now they talk about your fall from grace

    CAR
WAS- c’mon. It’s the Lions. Really.
BUF- I’m officially on the Bandwagon.
NE- c’mon. It’s the Rams. THE RAMS.
NO- Almost went with this for the “lock”, but then y’all would just pick SD
    NYJ- c’mon. C’MON. Really.
    PHI
HOU- Somebody has to win this one, right?
    JAC
NYG- C’MON! Was I going to pick the Steelers?
SF- New coach in midseason? That’s good for a single(tary) win.
TEN- I’m torn over which irritates me more. Jeff Fisher’s Highway Patrolman ‘stache, or Peyton Manning’s oddly shaped forehead. Today, I’m going with the forehead. Stupid forehead…

This weeks Lead Pipe Lock of the Week is brought to you by Mrs Pinkney’s Padded Pantaloons, ’cause if you’re gonna fall flat on yer ass, it’d be nice to have a little padding down there: Bucs over the Cowboys

Here we go sports fans………Week 8:

    Baltimore
    Arizona
    Tampa Bay
    Washington
Miami (wouldn’t be the upset of upsets but a sweet upset no less)
    New England
New Orleans (or even Old Orleans)
    NY Jets
    Philadelphia
    Jacksonville
    Houston
Indianapolis (not exactly an upset pick, more like a knock the apple cart over pick)
    San Fran
Pittsburgh (time for the bad boys to be bad boys, late hits, trash talk, eye pokes)

    As for the picks,
    BAL
    CAR
    TB
    WAS
    BUF
    NE
    NO
    NYJ
    PHI
    JAC
    PIT
    SF
    TEN

As for RWinger and the Steeler bashing, come’on! Late hits? I’m pretty sure it was the Ravens flagged for two late hits last time they played. Eye pokes? That was the Cleveland game! Trash talk? Suggs talks about bounties; Mendenhall said “I’m going to have a big game.” sounds like positive talk for himself to me!

Bad boys…Holmes doesn’t help, but he was stopped because he had a similar car to the one they were looking for, and he immediately told the cops. The Ravens, Bengals, and Browns have more arrests (and trials) in solitary players than the Steelers have on the entire roster. None of it’s excusable, but don’t go crying “bad boys” just because the Black and Gold hits harder, plays crisper, and wins the games!

Brian Young: I wasn’t bashing the Burgh, I was calling for old time Steeler football, the glory days of the Steel Curtain. I was hoping for the bad boys to clean some Giant clocks. Nothing better than seeing Troy flying across the field and finishing a tackle! But……..the yellow helmets have to go!

RWinger, good, I wasn’t happy to think I was against you in something. The “late hits, trash talk, eye pokes” doesn’t seem to follow, but I’m with you on the helmets… throwbacks are sweet once a season for a prime time game, but they’ve been wearing them for every big game. Sure, it may as well have been national (poor Montana), but it was a 4:15 game.

How do you win with 2 men down on your offensive line, starting your 4th running back, missing a starting corner and nose tackle, and lose because of an injury to the long snapper?

I think black and gold wins that game if Holmes plays (Ben had 4 coverage sacks; Holmes gets open for one of those) or if Clark isn’t injured (Tyrone Carter was a step too slow on that 4th down desperation toss, and Clark has speed and youth to get safety help to stop that catch), but the defense played great until Harrison gave up 2 points and 30 yards of field position. He almost snapped the ball for a 30 yard FG!

    Tampa Bay

    Atlanta
    NY Giants
Indianapolis (if they don’t break through this week, the season is shot)
    Seattle
Washington (It pains me because I like the Steelers)

I’m still on the fence with the Dayton Triangles vs. Canton Bulldogs game but I’m pretty sure that the Providence Steam Rollers will win. We’ll call this the flashback segment.

Sorry folks- the Week 10 Lead Pipe Lock o’ the Week will not be seen on this channel.
I lost a dear friend and colleague yesterday. She was a bit rough around the edges, but she had a heart of gold. She was never afraid to speak her mind, sometimes because of- sometimes in spite of- her audience.
She was a wife, a mother, a sister, and a grandmother. On top of that, she managed to have a career of over 20 years in service to her community.
They may fill her position on the duty roster, but she will never be replaced.
May the Lord God bless you and keep you, Peggy.

Looks like Molly is on vacation (much needed I’m sure) so old Winger will go ahead and do the update:

Molly had 11 wins last week, Adam and MBQ coming in with 10 each. Detroit let a couple of us down (again) as did KC (at least on my end).

Anyhow, here’s how we look after Week 10:

    84 Wins:
    MBQ (10)
    Brian Young (9)

    78 Wins:
    Colleen (Bye Week)

    77 Wins:
    RWinger (9)

    76 Wins:
    Dell (Bye Week)

    73 Wins:
    Molly (11)

    72 Wins:
    Dusty (Bye Week)

    70 Wins:
    Steve (8)
    Cindy (Bye Week)

    65 Wins:
    Carlin (Bye Week)

    64 Wins:
    Joel (Bye Week)

    62 Wins:
    Beefaroni (Bye Week)

    54 Wins:
    Neil (Bye Week)
    Liza (Bye Week)

    52 Wins:
    Adam (10)

    21 Wins:
JoBeth (Bye Week again, I/R List, MIA, who knows)

As Molly would say, if she were typing this, check the math, and let’s keep this going with Week 11 picks.

May as well throw in my Week 11 picks since I’m sitting here typing:

    NY Jets (Thursday Night game)
    Atlanta
    Philadelphia
    Green Bay
    Indianapolis
New Orleans (Last week was a heartbreaker, I’m torn, but not that torn)
    Miami
Baltimore (Will be a real test, top run offense vs. top run defense)
    Tampa Bay
Carolina (Detroit will still be in search of that first win)
San Francisco (Home field advantage and the Rams’ ship has sailed)
    Arizona
    Pittsburgh
    Tennessee
    Washington (Great NFC rivalry)
Buffalo (Falling apart as the season progresses but can manage the Browns)

RWinger has got it going on!!! Thank you so very, very much for stepping up to the plate, greatly appreciated. I was on vacay….needed it to be longer though, though I doubt I could afford any more time in Vegas.
Really, I’ve been back since Tuesday and was bitten by a nasty flu bug or something and spent the day in bed yesterday.
I did do these earlier this afternoon and my only difference is Adam-our Pitt. Steeler loving scallywag- tried to get ANOTHER freebie with his Denver pick coming in on Sunday for that Thursday game.
This just backs up my original theory, NEVER trust Steelers fan.

Anyway, I was a bit disappointed in turnout this past week on the dagger. What is the deal, here? The one week I don’t send out my courtesy email reminders and people forget…..
    HELLO!

Let’s get it on daggers! You all suck.

Winger, again, thank you so very much! You should get a raise!

Football on Thursday should be reserved for High School JV games and tilts between teams like Tusculum and Lenoir Rhyne! I draw my line in the sand here (perhaps with the exception of picking against DET on Thanksgiving Day… that’s an easy W)!
    Week 11 already!
ATL- I’m on the Ryan Express, baby!
IND- I’m not on the Rosenfels Limited…
MIA- Joey Porter will remove himself from the game at halftime, go up to the luxury boxes, and taunt Al Davis for the final 30 minutes of regulation.
CAR- I think Daunte Culpepper was enjoying retirement
    PHI- (OHH the pain!!!)
    GB
NO- Herm goes for two after each KC TD…final score NO 34 KC 6
    TB
SF- Coach drops pants in lieu of calling coin flip (It’s HEADS!)
AZ- Kurt Warner celebrates 50th birthday at halftime…
    PIT- (I think I just had a mini-stroke…)
    WAS- (Yep…can’t feel my arms….)
    BUF- Molly special
BAL- I AM SUCH A HOMER!!!

And the Lead Pipe Lock o’ the Week, brought to you by Aqua-escent Septic Service, where “we’ll take crap from anybody”: JAC over TEN

Pigskin prognosticators are dropping like flies…what up with that?

Whatev. I’m not going to let it effect my game. Remember: “The race goes not always to the swift, but to those that keep on running.”

The grand prize just got even better fellow dagger pickers. No joke.

    The Philly/Cinncy game tied? Crazy…
Baltimore got it handed to them in a bad way. It was embarrassing. Can they rebound?
That Pitt game with the erroneus call at the end taking away the touchdown cost bookies in Vegas $65 mill. Pwah-hahah…I love that! And I especially love that because it helped me out in a major way in my other pool (that pays) since San Diego covered the spread. Whoop, whoop!!!
The Bills made things interesting Monday night but couldn’t seal the deal in the end…wide right- words that bring a chill to all Bills’ fans like no snowstorm ever could.

We had eight playas…Everyone did pretty good.
Rwinger had good karma from posting the field last week and topped out with 11 w’s- Steve too. Nice work brothers.
BYoung and MBQ only reeled in eight w’s apiece so the winning gap is shrinking their fellas. Don’t let your nerves get the best of you. Neil, however, was the lowest since he failed to get his picks in (other than that Thursday night game).

Still much grid-iron action and a lot can happen in one week with so many games on the board. Get to your studying and bring it for week 12.

    Break out your calculators…

    92 wins
    MBQ (8)
    Brian Young (8)

    88 wins:
    RWinger (11)

    85 wins
Dell (9) I cost you one on Monday night

    82 wins
    Molly (9)

    81 wins
    Steve (11)
    Dusty (9)

    61 wins
    Adam (10)

colleen 78- I think she is out for season
    cindy- 70?
    Carlin- 65?
    Joel- 64?
    Beef- 62?
    Neil- 54?
    Liza-54?
    JoBeth-21??

Houston (This is a helmet design pick….better looking helmet wins)
    Tampa Bay
    Jacksonville
    Kansas City
Miami (The little Dolphin train that could…gotta make it, gotta make it!)
Chicago (It hurts to pick Da Beers but a win is a win)
New York Jets (Jets are playing good and Tennesse is going going to stumble)
    Denver
Atlanta (Going with the home team, close game)
Dallas (Which I will not pick once Pacman Jones is back….)
    New YorK Football Giants
    Washington

    Thursady games:

    Arizona

    Sunday games:
    Buffalo

    Tampa Bay
Green Bay (It’s going to be cold…home field advantage)
    Atlanta
    NY Jets
    Pittsburgh
Kansas City (Nothing but pride on the line)
Minnesota (Toss up, Dell makes a good point with the better looking helmet, but this ended up being a Budgie the Bird pick and as they say Bears do it in the woods and Budgie does it on the sports section)

    Monday night:

Just a few more weeks and things are really, really heating up. The boys at the top, Rwinger and MBQ are making it difficult to pick up any games as they are picking their butts off! RWinger had 11 wins while MBQ came in with a solid 10.
BYoung is also making a move with his 11 wins. Great picking daggers.

How about those Phillies? I spoke to McNabb the day before and he told me he was a lock!

    Here you have it, prognosticators…

    111 w’s
    RWinger (11)

    110 w’s
    MBQ (10)

    109 w’s
    BYoung (11)

    103 w’s
    Dell (9)

    102 w’s
    Molly (10)

    89 w’s
    Cindy (9)

    68 w’s
    Adam (7)

    don’t forget, check my work.
Those Bills and Jets pretty much shocked all of us.

Budgie the Bird makes it another week and I’m willing to go with him again!

    Thursday:
San Diego (pathetic as they are, Oakland is worse and Budgie agreed)

    Sunday:
    Jacksonville
    Minnesota
Indianapolis (last weeks win was plain old ugly but it was a win)
    New York Football Giants
Tennessee (the Browns will be starting a #3 quarterback)
New Orleans (I’ll give them home field points and Budgie soiled Hotlanta)
Green Bay (someone please tell Houston not to wear those God awful Monday night uniforms again, I felt a seizure coming on!)
Miami (I know warm weather playing in tundra BUT any given Sunday…)
    New York Jets
    New England
    Denver
    Arizona (clinch the division)
    Pittsburgh
Baltimore (I’m a homer and not from PG or Montgomery counties)

    Monday:

SD, MIN, IND, TEN, NE, DEN, ARI, BAL, CAR….
Here’s hoping I can make up some ground in week 15, starting with lifting my boycott of Thursday games for the second week in a row:

NO- I should start listening to Budgie?
ATL- I’m still on the Ryan Express
WAS- The Bengals ARE that bad…
TEN- Fisher will not put on the brakes yet, still have to clinch home field
GB- I will not pick the Jags again this year, even if they line up against Fordham.
MIA- something to play for in December
SEA- Almost took it to the Pats last week
NYJ- Bills, why have you forsaken me?
KC- This is their equivalent of the Super Bowl
IND- That perfect season seems within reach for the Lions
    ARI
    BAL- HOOOOOOOOMER
    CAR
    NYG
    PHI

And the Lead Pipe Lock o’ the Week, brought to you by the long list of over the counter medications that have allowed me to work through this head cold all week (special thanks to Advil Cold and Sinus!!): Raiders over Pats!

The last 5 minutes of the game exemplifies what still separates the Ravens from the elite tier of teams in the league. If they can’t seal the deal- keeping the Steelers out of the endzone from 92 YARDS AWAY- they aren’t ready to play with the big boys yet….

Whoa! What a week it was in the NFL: the Not-For-Long league.

Dagger prognosticators we are down to the salacious six. We’ve got the gumption to keep on, keeping on or perhaps it is just our tenacity.

Nevertheless, I applaud you (and me) for seeing this baby through so far. Don’t let me down, here, football fans- We are all busy. It is Christmas, blah- blah-blah. Ho, ho, ho. I implore you to stick it out till the end.
You (we) will all go down in history as the first ever Dagger Pigskin Prognosticators- win, lose or draw.

So, Let’s get it on, boys and girls!

Lots of activity in the standings…some of the big dogs are showing their vulnerable sides and some of the middle-men (and women) are showing their teeth and picking up some ground. Can you feel me? With just two weeks left, it’s a wonderful time of the year to commandeer the top!

I’m making the list, and you best be sure to check it twice- please. I’m prone to errors now. Dont’ ask.

    133 wins
MBQ (12!!! Nice recovery after dropping to second last week)

    132 wins
    BYoung (10)

    130 wins
    R Winger (8) ouch… it’s okay- you’ll get em next week.

    125 wins

    119 wons
Dell (7) yes Dell, you’re commentary is most def. the best! Keep it coming…

    111 wins
    Cindy (10)

CHECK IT TWICE. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ERRORS…we all are.

With the holidays approaching, I thought I’d take a little time for some reflection on the season that was.
The Lead Pipe has turned out to be some sort of Lead/Silly Putty composite that couldn’t lock a toddler out of a cookie jar. Record YTD: 2-12. Average margin of defeat: 12 points.
I have been let down by some good teams, and have assured the defeat of others by simply implying that they would win on a given Sunday (see AZ v WAS Week 2, or TB v DAL Week 8).
Therefore, in the this, the giving season, I give you the Week 16 Lead Pipe Lock o’ the Week, brought to you by Freda Feltzer’s Fancy Fruitcakes, the gift that keeps on giving: DAL over BAL
In the immortal words of Randy Hickey: Felice Blobby-Blah!!

CIN- Two more full seasons, and a Carson Palmer sighting, Fitzpatrick could be the second coming of Matt Cassel
    NO- Lions pursue Perfect SEASON!!!
ARI- Could this be the help the Ravens need?
    PIT- I just threw up a little…
SF- Singletary is auditioning for a full-time gig…
MIA- Herm is auditioning for Bill Cowher’s chair at CBS
    TB
DEN- Sorry Molly, there ain’t a Who in Whoville that’d get me on the Bills again
    NYJ- AFC East Champs???
HOU- They do this crap EVERY YEAR!!!
ATL- Got to hand Rookie of the Year to Ryan. He’s pretty good…
PHI- The long national (capitol) nightmare continues…
CAR- They’re better that the Giants, right now…
CHI- One of my big “2” LPLOTW wins came by picking against GB. Take that, stupid Cheeseheads…

Big XMAS party today! Merry Christmas to all…..

    Okay sports’ fans…It is time.

Dell, love your witty analysis. You’ll have to keep on that during the playoffs and I fully expect you to stop by my blog: http://www.mdbirdlover.wordpress.com to check it out, and keep it coming. I’m being struck with sweet memories of TampaBay from 01- SB XXXV.
Let’s not get into the p-word talk just yet. One week at a time…

If my calculations are correct, (ed note: it’s 2:15 am and I just made 25 lbs of lasagna and 1,022 Christmas Cookies) I took the top prize this week with 10 whoppers.

    Go me!

Unfortunately, I did not fare nearly as well in my pool where I have the opportunity to win actual peanuts. As if. My lame Detroit musing is simply embarrassing. New Orleans has had my number all year.
Anyhoo, our resident education expert-turned-sports-afficianado has been MIA since Thursday’s game. Cindy, come back!!! One more week sister. Just one more week.

    Final Week 17 picks already!?
After my early Christmas present to all the Dagger Prognosticators last week, I figured I’d get my picks in first. All you have to do to “make the Yuletide gay” is pick directly opposite of me. Last week, that’d have gotten you 11 wins!

I can’t stand the anticipation anymore. Unwrap your gifts!
    ATL- First package, A CUPCAKE
NE- Second package, more COAL FOR MOLLY’S STOCKING
CIN- Third package, an endorsement deal from CareerBuilder.com for Herm
GB- Fourth package, an endorsement deal from Monster.com for Marinelli
CHI- Fifth package, Sausage, sausage, DITKA
TEN- Sixth package, gift certificates to Madame Han’s spa. Both teams “Happy”
MIN- Seventh package, a BIG, um, bath towel, and a home playoff game
CAR- Eighth package, passing record for Brees, months to reflect in peace
PIT- Ninth package, a big FOAM FINGER (Yep, they’re NUMBER ONE WITH ME!!)
OAK- Tenth package, an AED for Al Davis after the Raiders pull the upset
MIA- Eleventh package, a W to help the Ravens’ cause
PHI- Twelfth package, a royal blue pacifier, monagrammed “T.O.”
SEA- Thirteenth package, a fitting sendoff for the worst team to ever make playoffs
SF- Fourteenth package, a fitting sendoff for the “worst coach on the planet”
DEN- Fifteenth package, Underoos, Under Armor, a copy of Underworld 3

    And, the sixteenth package…
You remember the last package under the tree. All shiny, big ribbons and bows streaming from the top. How the anticipation of “THE” gift made it hard to sleep the night before.
I hope you’re not one of those “let’s keep the wrapping paper” people because you’re going to want to tear into this one…

The Week 17, no BS, Take it to the Limit one more Time, Lead Pipe lock o’ the Week, brought to you by “death and taxes”: BAL over JAX.

Merry Christmas to all the Daggers!

    Houston
Indianapolis (who has the better second and third stringers?)
    Minnesota
    Carolina
    Pittsburgh
    Tampa Bay
Baltimore (remember the “experts” picking a 6-10 season at best?)
Miami (a worst to first stunner)

    Washington
San Diego (the “Who Wants to Lose to Indy the Following Week” bowl)

I’m making a list and you are checking it twice…

    Is this thing on?

MBQ goes deep and takes it all with 156 smackeroonies! That is right, 156 total wins! He had a stellar week, winning 14 of 16. Congrats…you and I need to hook up because I have your reward.

Tied for second… Brian Young and RWinger each had 10 wins this week and ended with 149 big ones. NICE. No prize for second, sorry, just a shout-out and a possible nod in the Dagger Pigskin Prognostication Honorable Mention List.***Pending committee review of course.

Third…Hey, hey, hey. It’s me. An 11-week win just wasn’t enough this late in the game. However, me and my 146 wins are pumped for playoffs and thrilled that you all took the time out to play. I’m hoping we move forward with a playoff prognostication? Are you in? No prize here just pride.

Last but not least, the best commentator of all time did bring it this final week. Dell, Dell, Dell…way to dig deep in the end there and give up a rock-solid showing. With 136 wins (12-spot for the week) you outshined week in and week out. You gave us a giggle and a clue into the NFL and who we should pick (opposite) your lead pipe o’ the week pick.

Fun, fun, fun. But as far as I’m concerned…it ain’t over till the fat lady sings brothers. What say you?

Let’s take this ride right into the Super Bowl! If I can pick every playoff game right, and you don’t pick any, Molly, that’d give me ALMOST enough wins to still finish in last place.
Snicker if you must, but I’m still alive and pickin’.

Let’s light this candle (easier said than done with the winds gusting to 65 MPH tonight…)!!!
    Saturday Picks:
    Game 1-
The kid inside of me wants to pick the frosting, but the adult in me loves the whole wheat! Dirty Birds expose the Cards like a fat kid getting pantsed in gym class.
    Game 2-
Weren’t the Chargers picked by some to run the table in the AFC this year? Count me in! Bolts-at home- over the Colts! Peyton will get his extra night’s stat in SD. The weather is SWEET!

    Sunday Picks:
    Game 1-
HOOOOOOOOMERRR!- The Ravens of 2008 looking like the Ravens of 2000? With an offense? Any offense? Fahgitaboutit! Birds over Fish!
    Game 2-
Are the Iggles frauds that backed their way into the playoffs? Where did the Vikings come from? Is it just me, or could Gerald McRainey play Brad Childress in the movie version of this season? Why can Green Bay play outdoors in January, while Minnesota has to play indoors all year long? No homerdome here- Eagles over Vikings!

    Let the Festivus commence!

My overall picks for the season in the pool where I made it to every prediction went 165 and 91, counting the tie as a loss. Just couldn’t predict that tie…

I think there should be a two game difference: I didn’t make it back to the Dagger to switch from the cowgirls to Philly, and a hurricane screw up! Back in week 2 everyone was talking about Houston, Baltimore, and Cincy having their schedules mixed up. Looks like it didn’t hurt the Ravens.

It caught me though: I picked Houston to beat Cincy in week 10, when the game was against Baltimore! Alas, that alone made me settle for a second place tie instead claiming first loser all to myself!

Wel, well, well……….a suprise or two this past weekend no doubt. I suppose the pressure was on Atlanta and Indy’s defense looked very predictable, at least the Ravens came through…….and didn’t go to a prevent defense in the 4th quarter!!

    This week, let’s see:
Baltimore (Tennessee ain’t all that!…..I hope)
    Pittsburgh
    Carolina
Philadelphia (They can get back every bit of respect lost during the tumble with 1 game…….as long as they win)

RWinger! I like the cut of your jib!
They say the regular season is just supposed to be 16 practices to prepare you for the playoffs. That must have been my philosophy all along….

    Saturday games
Game 1- Which Titans team will show up at venerable LP Field on Saturday? My money is that it’ll be the team that has looked decidedly average over the last 3-4 weeeks of the regular season, not the world beaters that started the season undefeated for 10 weeks: Ravens 20, Titans 10 (Anybody else notice that I was 3 points off the prediction for last week’s game? I AM THE SMARTEST MAN ALIVE!!!)

Game 2- The Cardinals will not disappoint me 2 weeks in a row. They have SOME nerve showing up to play in their first home playoff game since the Treaty of Paris. Will lightning strike twice? To quote Daniel Craig, when asked about a Bond Trilogy,” No ****ing Way!” Panthers over Cards

    Sunday Games

Game 1- I’d like to see this game end in a tie, just to watch them have to grab Donovan as he tries to jog out of the tunnel and get on the team bus. “PLAYOFF games can’t end in a tie, D!!” Giants over Iggles

Game 2- Just prior to taking the field Sunday, coack Tomlin reminds Big Ben that he’s in Pittsburgh, playing football, for the Steelers. Ben asserts that he doesn’t have school today, it’s Saturday… Steelers over Chargers

Dagger Prognosticators, even in the face of adversity, you still got it!!!.

Anyway, it’s early but I’ve got a better feel for the games now.
Without further ado, here are the four winners of these divisional playoff games…

Seriously, game 1- do I even have to say it? I mean really, I am the epitome of a homer! My Ravens are strutting into Nashville and walking away victorious, it’s that simple. Not saying it’s going to be easy but it will be a good game and B-more’s City Hall can stay purple-lighted forever as far as I’m concerned. It’s electric in this town now. GO RAVENS.

Pitt. (I just threw up a little in my mouth) but I’d love, just love to see a Chargers upset. Oh man, how sweet would that be!!!

NFC suckers: (I’ve got no love for the NFC these days. No love)

    No LT?
Can Sproles be THE MAN against this Steeler defense?

Not bad going 3 and 1, now it’s wire time.

In what should be a knock down drag out old school football game I’m going to ride the rookie magic carpet and go with the Ravens. It may be wishful thinking, but it will be a real football game (classic old style).

As for the NFC, the Cards shock the Eagles. Of course this changes my whole I-95 Super Bowl but I can’t help but like the Cardinals………and I’d love to see the Ravens smack down a Bidwell team in the Super Bowl!

Suffered a little setback with the Divisional Round of the playoffs. Couple that with the intestinal flu that swept through EVERY OCCUPANT of casa de Dell this weekend. By Monday my house looked like a refugee camp in Darfur.
I just can’t figure the NFC this year. Underachieving teams, overachieving teams, who can keep track anymore?
But, my beloved American Football Conference!
Are the two best teams in the AFC still standing? At least defense #1 and #2 are.
Will “Big Ben” finally strike 12:00 on Joe the QB? Short answer: ‘fraid so…
I’m as big a homer as they come. But, there are things that happen during the course of a season that lend the “destiny” tag to certain teams. How many weeks have the Stillers forcibly removed one from their collective rectums? Too many. Destiny. Sad. Stillers over the Ravens. Book it.
NFC- Now officially stands for “Not of F***ing Consequence.” Cards? Donkeys. Iggles? Donkeys. Beards over Bidwells.

On a related topic, why do we still suffer through a two week hiatus between the championships and the Super Bowl? Hell, they’re damn near playing baseball now until Thanksgiving.
Hockey and baskeyball run year-round (I guess, ’cause I don’t follow fringe sports).
Next thing you know, the NFL playoffs will be competing with Spring Training baseball games on TV.

Dell, Dell, Dell. I had a major comment crush on you right up until your awful pick on the AFC Championship Game…it’s over for us Dell. LOL.

Dude, seriously, this AFC matchup is going to be one helluva game. I’m thinking, like most, defensive brouhaha, low-scoring and Flacco and the dee bring it home.
We are injured, we are the underdog, and we are the winner.
Ravens don’t go down tres’ to the Steelers, not now-not ever. Are my purple shades on? Yes sir. But I’m telling you it’s a sure thing. That said, in no way am I saying its going to be simple or even pretty. It’s going to be a knock-down drag out fight…what’s our name? Who knew this marketing tag would turn into prophecy? It’s on sports fans and the Ravens aren’t going to get punked by the Stillers!
As for te NFC, RWinger (thanks for noting my spectacular playoff week of prognostication by the way, I’ve been doing my homework)…
I personally see the Eagles pulling this papa out. I’m a McNaab fan and think he’s got it here. Warner, who offers another feel-good comeback story line, I’m just not feeling it. He hasnt had a lot of success with the Eagles dee. yes, he’s home and yes he beat them once in the playoffs with the Rams, but I think the Cards have been played out. Their time has come.

that’s it fellas…Oh happy festivus maximus…See you in Tampa Bay…

    Throwing caution to the wind……..

    Cardinals
    Ravens

It could happen, anything could happen. I have faith in the Ravens and a quarterback that looks at it as just another game and I won’t get upset if I don’t see and prevent defense. As for the Cardinals, come on, they pretty much suck and play in a crappy division, I’ll be rooting….just because.

The Ravens don’t have anything to hang their heads about. Picked to finish at the bottom of the dividion they shoed a lot of people that they were for real (myself included). Rookie QB, rookie coach, injuries and they still beat out a lot of other teams for the dance. Finished better than the Pats, Colts, Titans, Cowboys, Giants, and Panthers……all picked by the experts to go all of the way. So much for the experts. Kyle Boller….good luck being a successful back-up on any other NFL team, Troy Smith……yes you wre a fifth round pick and no you are not the same type of Tom Brady fifth round pick. Chris Mac…….anyone can be replaced.

Super Bowl Pick: Steelers over Cards (nice to see that the experts were wrong on that end too) 37-10.
