McGrady: “…Government Will Take Whatever You Let Them!”

July 3, 2009 By A Dagger Reader 34 Comments

Hello Patriots!

We are still on for this Saturday, Rain or shine! We have lots of great stuff planned for our TEA Party at 9am in Bel Air. We will be at 220 S Main Street – The Harford County Government Administrative Offices!

Thanks to all of the people that made their opinions heard at the Tea Parties and at the Council meetings, this issue has come to the forefront of people’s minds as we move into an election year. People are receiving their property tax bills this week, and I hope they will realize that the government will take whatever you let them!

I am very excited about our Tea Party this Independence Day. Tell all of your friends to come out and celebrate America’s Independence! Our forefathers gave their fortunes and lives for us to be safe in our homes; let’s honor their memories. There is a lot of stuff going on all day in Bel Air from very early to the fireworks at dusk. You can come to the TEA Party and go home with time for a picnic and nap before the fireworks! For more information about that check out their website at http://www.belairjuly4.org/innerpages/home.html.

We have some speakers talking about the Constitution, talking about individual rights, a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence, and some other surprises. However, this all takes a back seat to YOU. Come out and take advantage of the open microphone to tell your story.

Tell your friends and email your contacts! I will see you bright and early at 9am on Saturday!

Thanks,
Patrick McGrady

Why is it ok for your organization to break the law. ? Your organization illegally place signs on on State property on Route 153 and Interstate 95. Now mty tax dollars, State employee manpower time and money must be used to remove these illeagal signs.
Also, you want lower taxes but yet you will use county property to demostrate and possiblt litter the premisie. Again,my tax dollars and county moniesy that they don’t have will use to clean it up.
I do hope you have fun celebrating what you did to the employess of Harford County government who LOST THEIR JOBS beacuase of YOUR orgainzation.

State and county property would seem to me to be public property on which any taxpayer should have the right to congregate – even people you disagree with, Tony. Instead of directing your anger to citizens exercising their rights, maybe the county employees should be exercising their own right to protest. The county has balanced it’s budget on their backs. Maybe the state/county should sell the land it owns and then would save the cost of upkeep plus collect taxes paid by private owners. May save some jobs but then again you wouldn’t need county/state employees to maintain it either.

Katelyn he is made about signs illegally placed in clear violation of law on certian roads and certian parts of roads. Just as I am mad about the billboard that is occupying a parking space 24/7 at the route 24 park and ride. I have tried to use that service and been unable to find a spot because they are all full. Granted maybe someone would have taken that spot before me, but at least they are using the park and ride for it’s intended purpose not as a free advertisement.

Tony, Tony,Tony, do you really think that the county would have to hire a clean-up crew to take care of the mess left by the protesters (IF they left a mess)? Or would it be cleaned up by COUNTY employees who are already getting paid?

Come on, tell me how this would cost one single dollar more. Your kneejerk reactions to everything concerning the folks who think we are taxed too highly are laughable. Spewing Inflammatory crap like “I do hope you have fun celebrating what you did to the employess of Harford County government who LOST THEIR JOBS beacuase of YOUR orgainzation” is pathetic. Nobody is having fun celebrating the loss of jobs to individuals. Some are able to comprehend the bigger picture, and obviously some are not.

    Actually Phil
Knee jerk would describe the bullying tactics of the teaparty exactly. If they really don’t like the way county government isbeing ranwell just move out . There are many more willing to move in and support our county officials.
As I mentioned earlier I guess it must be OK for them to break the law by placing ILLEGAL signs along state roads

Everyone should carefully read this quote from Tony:

“If they really don’t like the way county government is being ran well just move out”

How appropriate on Independence Day. You’re not from around here (the USA), are you?

Please keep talking – you are swaying more folks over to our side.

Phil Tony is right about the knee jerk reaction and outrage. If the whole group had come to the table back when they had public meetings for input on the budget we would not be having to last minute this stuff.

I see you have a sense of humor.
I got a chuckle out of you your line about more people coming over to your side.
I think your group needs to come to the table now and work with the administration to have logical input for next years budget.

    Cdev and Tony;
Coming to the table sounds great. Coming to public meetings also sounds great. The problem is that the common folk don’t get listened to. In order to get any career politician to listen to you there have to be significant contribution dollars or huge voting block numbers. I think that sucks but it is reality. I have spent most of my adult life around politicians and see this attitude all the time. One sitting member of the US House of Representatives has told me, arm across shoulder, “it’s all about end game, Dave.” When pressed he laughed and said “end game” is getting reelected. Earlier I used the phrase career politician, and there is the crux of all of these problems. If someone would come the seat of government at whatever level to be a “public servant” but maintain a career as a businessman, farmer, barber, or whatever as the system envisioned, we wouldn’t have this end game crap.
But back to the theme; the Tea Party has begun to make these end gamers realize that a very vocal minority is growing into majority of us who are withholding campaign money and will be significant voting block. Tony, shooting the messenger has worked well ever since Karl Marx suggested it, just look at Palin. But, this messenger has a very thick hide and threatens the future of this very secure environment our anointed ones have come to love. I am a realist and know that even though taxation is the confiscation of wealth, it is necessary. The question is or should be; what is the government’s job: Is it to feed an clothe us from cradle to grave, ala Obama, or to provide an environment where energetic and intelligent people can thrive? Taxing us into submission can not be healthy. If 34 people had to lose their jobs because the powers that be want to penalize us for voicing our opposition, that’s a damn shame. If the folks on Bond Street can’t find another way to get it done, then throw them out. I personally would resign before going along with the crap of cutting good people and shutting down libraries just to make a point. Several of the elected and appointed servants need to get out of the way because the tea party train is in motion and will run them over.

Dave Yensan, that’s why I’m in favor of getting rid of pensions for elected officials in federal offices. There is no need to go to Washington, stay for the rest of their working lives, and retire with a big payout, but there’s little to no chance of these folks voting to end their gravy train and return to the idea of citizen politicians.

Tony, I’m not surprised you find humor in this situation. I’m not laughing.

    Cdev;
I agree that you negate your right to complain, but I also believe that if we filled the CMW auditorium it will not make one tiny bit of difference in the outcome. In that situation they are going through the motions and know that they are aware of the “big picture” and you and I aren’t. Their minds are made up and they don’t want them confused with facts. The gays and lesbians haven’t gained a national stage by asking quietly and attending a bunch of useless meetings. They took to the streets and normalized the abnormal. The Tea Baggers are taking to the streets to be heard for the first time in their lives.

Phil Dirt, I agree with that but would take it one step further and eliminate about 95% of their perks. Take away their health benefits, it’s only a part time job. Eliminate the exclusive dining facilities, don’t let them be treated as royalty, put a stop to taxpayer funded junkets, make them fill out tons of forms every day, make their job every bit a miserable as they make it for every small business owner. Make end game look like crap!

Dave I disagree with the mind made up part. These people took the county council room by storm and got what they wanted. No connections or anything. Had they shown up with the same vigor at the beginning we would have gotten the same result and the cuts would have been well thought out and planned for instead of a knee jerk reaction. That is my big complaint with them. They skipped the process except for a few and showed up after the planning phase demanding.

I will interpret that as a “I am sorry, I shouldn’t have said that.”

Look I don’t disagree with the point of view totally, I just disagree with the means to doing so and the self victimization by some. The real victims are those who lost a vital service because these cuts are not being thought out and planned or phased in rather just knee jerk reactions.

    Tony,

You need not worry. I personally removed the signs near Route 152 and Interstate 95. I also saw to the clean-up of the county parking lot after the July 4th Tea Party. It was left in better shape then when we found it, with old trash being removed from the shrubbery, etc…

On a historical note the Tea Party movement had not yet started when the current County budget process began in October of 2008. It took the bailouts, TARP, and stimulas packages to drive many of us over the edge, and thus finally begin to stand up to ever growing government. Many of us are new to political organizing and are just learning the ropes.

Rest assured we will be a part of the next budget process starting in October of 2009.

The TEA party on Sat. was well attended and people did leave the parking lot cleaner than we found it. I am thankful to the participants, all of them shared parts of their lives with the attendees and the audience responded both positively and negatively as they have a right to do. The cars that beeped as they drove past did their parts to let freedom ring, and the folks that attended were cheering and the content was both informative and entertaining. The range of ages of the folks from little kids to wiser and more mature citizens, was great and the speakers ranged from fired up to less than fired up. All were welcome and the topics covered a broad spectrum of ideas.
The groups that had sign up tables may find new participants and that will be great.

The next time we will meet will be at the council chambers meeting on July 14, 2009 from 5:30 till the meeting starts. The property tax CAP is being decided. The reduction from 9% to 5% is going to have a major impact on services, employees and operations in the county. The budget will be reduced close to 30 million dollars if the CAP is reduced and folks will see a reduction in their property taxes. I am hopeful that the rate is reduced. The rally will be outside the chambers and anyone who wants to address the council may during the citizen input. If you have strong feelings one way or the other, show up. On the Harford Tax Revolt.com web site, you can e-mail the council and the exec. directly. We the people have to make our voices, concerns, needs and wants known to our ELECTED officials. Call, write, email and/or show up. God Bless!

Pat excellent job. That is what is supposed to happen. Show up. Just make sure you get on the speaking list before you show up.

Tom true that the process begins in october but your group had its first TEA Parties before the public input sessions had been held I believe. They are later in the process. Even still wouldn’t it have been more prudent to express your dismay with the budget not having been cut enough and get involved for this upcoming year so we can look forward to more planned and thoughtful budget cuts?

BTW another thought maybe you would like to help chase down the deadbeats who are not paying there property taxes and the county is accepting less from. You would be suprised whose property taxes you could buy the rights to at the auction. I have a friend who currently has the tax collection rights on a lovely 5 bedroom in Fallston with a couple living in it who has 7 functioning cars, 2 antiques. The people claimed they could not pay because they spend to much on their car insurance. Sounds like they should sell one or two of them.

Hurray for Independence Day! There were so many people at the Bel Air Tea Party on Saturday morning that we couldn’t let everybody speak who wanted to!

It was phenomenal! People talked about their service to the country, politicians told us (it’s up to us to see whether we believe them or not) how they were going to defend their our rights if they got (re) elected.

I had a great time DJ-ing the event. I really appreciate everybody who came out on a gorgeous Independence Day. Let’s remember what our Forefathers gave up for us to have our rights.

I hope that nobody’s rights were violated at the Parade, that would be shameful on our Independence Day.

Just to remind everybody about identities here, my mother is Pasquetta (Pat) McGrady, and I’m Patrick McGrady.

Anyhow, come out out for a rally at the Council Chambers at 5:30 on July 14th to make the Council see that we support their decision to lower the Cap on Property taxes in Harford County!

The grammar in the headline, taken from this letter, is wrong and belies a critical misunderstanding among the tea party folks: “..Government will take whatever you let them.” It should read “Government will take what ever you let IT.”

    Justin and Matt,

You guys are correct in you statements about my Grammar. The intent of this letter was to enthuse those people who already planned to attend the event; publishing it on this webpage was not considered. Anyway, I have a tendency to be very passionate and this translates to my writing. I am very fond of commas and exclamation points although they are often inappropriate.

Also, “the government” should be referred to as it. I stand corrected. But the point stands. The governing bodies will tax until the people stand up against it. This i

I don’t think that the meaning of my letter was tainted by the grammatical mistakes but I’m sorry if it did. If you have some suggestions to improve my writing please shoot me an email. I’m always looking to work on the little stuff like that. My mother is a former english teacher and I always similar complaints 🙂

I read with great interest Annette Blum’s letter in the Aegis this morning.

Wow, Annette is very concerned about keeping “dysfunctional politics” out of the Bel Air 4th of July Parade and she praises the “spirit of civility” of certain citizens who either stood idly by or those that acted so bravely to stamp out disagreeable messages carried by those dysfunctional political extremists.

Annette you’re right we need to ensure we have a Bel Air 4th of July Celebration/Parade that is the devoid of or free of Free Speech. We have to remember we have adults, children and families all gathered in one place and to have them learn that citizens can speak freely and express themselves would be a travesty.

What would Bel Air, Harford County, Maryland and the Country turn into if regular folks freely expressed their views on all manner of things? We must be forever vigilant and conduct 4th of July Parades in a manner that Our Founding Fathers intended and would be proud.

Personal Note to Annette: What can I do to further help you, Michael and David with your important and patriotic mission? Michael has my contact information.
