Del. Riley Offers Reward For Those Defacing Campaign Signs in Aberdeen

August 10, 2010 By Brian Goodman 34 Comments

Fed up with a rash of recent defacement and outright theft of his campaign signs in Aberdeen, Del. Dan Riley is offering a cash reward for the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

In total, about 15 signs, costing about $5 per sign, have been stolen off of private property in the Mount Royal Avenue area of Aberdeen. The signs started disappearing last week.

According to one of his supporters, Riley’s sign was stolen and a Republican opponent’s literature was left behind.

Riley is quick to dismiss suggestions that the wind may have carried his signs away, stating he knows how to install the signs properly so as to withstand Mother Nature. The delegate also feels that it was not the local skateboarders who vandalized his campaign materials. Riley pointed out the kids would have to go out of their way (out and around the skate park) to vandalize the signs. He thinks the kids are blamed too often and would be a convenient scapegoat.

Here is the statement Riley released Tuesday afternoon:

Due to the actions of those who have chosen to violate my supporters/my 1st Amendment rights I am offering a $250 reward for the arrest and conviction of the person(s) removing and/or defacing my campaign signs. These signs were on private property and mostly in the Aberdeen area. If you have any information, please call me at (410)676-6817.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call.

Sincerely,

Delegate Dan Riley
District 34A

Defacing campaign signage knows no political affiliation. Your comment suggests that you vote straight down the ticket, without consideration of each candidate. Typical sheep.

Mr. Riley was a fine educator, and loves this county with all of his heart. With that being said, even though I may lean to the right, I would without a doubt vote for him, if I was within his constituancy.

What a completely simple-minded comment to make. Nice to see you’re not biased in any way. As for the defacing….it’s completely wrong and I hope those responsible are caught and exposed for the vandals they are.

I have had my Ehrlich/Craig sign stolen out of my yard once and my business once, and my sister had an Al Redmer sign stolen from her yard.
I think it works both ways.

I think it is wrong to take the signs down But Riley should also consider not parking his eyesaw of a truck in a handicap zone at the hospital for three day’s… and to suggest arrest … wow sign of the times… really focus on the issue’s and forget the small amount of signs that may have blwn away in the recent high winds and rain we had~

Why I believe Mr. Riley has a MD Handicap tag. Is he not allowed to use the space?

    Louie,
Sir I have earned my handicapped parking pass. I have arthritis of the ankles, knees, and hips. My breathing capacity is also limited to about 70%. I am a 3-time cancer survivor and have had open-heart surgery. I am a tribute to modern medicine. I am at the hospital 3 times a week for cardio rehab sessions.
Louie you say the signs blew away, no way! They were stapled to their frames.
I like nothing more than to talk on the isssues so please call me, at my home, at 410.676.6817 or you can meet in the hospital parking lot Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
On constituent matters call me at my district office, 410.676.1131.

    Louie,
Thank you and apology accepted. Sometimes in today’s society people forget that little things mean a lot and say a great deal about the person. Little things like saying “I’m sorry”, “I apologise”, “thank you”, “please”, and “your welcome” should never go out of fashion.

Dirty politics games in Aberdeen, no way, this must be a first. (now rolling around on the floor laughing myself into a frenzy) On a serious note, Dan Riley is a good guy, he’s passionate, and he’s actually middle of the road and quite down to earth which is to say no far left or far far right politics, he’s all about common sense politics. I wish him luck in the primary, he won’t appear on my primary ballot (different party affiliation), but I do believe that Dan has put community interest ahead of personal gain, not something that many politicians can claim these days.

    Harco res,

Baseless accusation like that are unacceptable and for that matter slanderous. Watch yourself. If it’s true please provide proof. The sign epidemic is across the county and there is no reason for Criag to steal signs in the North or West ends of the county.

I am surprised that the few signs that Riley has up have been vandalized..The campaigns of Riley and James have been dismal so far and I expect one if not both to fall when the GOP tidal wave hits Harford this fall.

We were out just last night replacing torn and missing signs! I don’t think my opponents are doing it. Last time, kids did it and got caught! I even had a mom call me in Annapolis this past session and embarrassingly admit that her son had one of my signs on his bedroom wall! As unfortunate as it is, it goes with the territory.

The only acceptable reason to remove a sign is if:
    a) it is placed on your propertywithout permission
    b) it creates a traffic hazzard at an intersection by placing it to the left side of a driver making a right hand turn and obstructing the view of on coming traffic.

I am aware of at least one sign that was on a property where the property owner did not give the approval. A call was made and it was taken down. Perhaps other property owners just took the signs down without calling. Maybe the sign erectors should have a list of property owners authorization and specific instructions as to where the signs should go to avoid that?

In the last 2 days, I have seen 2 Marla Posey Moss signs ripped to the ground and with in 50ft. a Dan Riley sign has appeared….Something smells fishy here!!! I think Riley is just trying to divert attention!!! oh and no authority line on any of his signs either!!!

    Harco.res.
First I do not support the taking, defacing, or knocking down others signs. I will venture to say that what smells fishy is your motive to start finger pointing where it does not belong.
Second all my sign material has an authority line.
Third it would be nice if you would use facts and not innuendos.
I will like to extend my reward of $250 for the arrest and conviction of the persons stealing or defacing ANYONE’S political signs.
