Del. Glass: Same-Sex Marriage “Should Be Decided by the People and Go To a Referendum”

February 15, 2012 By Dagger News Service 21 Comments

From the offices of state Del. Glen Glass:

The latest on what’s happening with the Civil Marriage Protection Act (House Bill 438):

This bill was passed by a combined Committee (Judiciary and Health & Government Operations) hearing on Tuesday. These two Committees were combined, which I am opposed, in an effort to avoid the possibility of the bill going to a referendum. This bill will now move to the House Floor for testimony and to be voted on later this week.

Because this legislation could affect so many, if passed, it should be decided by the people and go to a referendum and not be decided by the politicians.

I remain for traditional marriage and continue to believe it should be between one man and one woman.

Delegate Glen Glass

They had both committee’s vote together because there were not enough votes. Why isn’t there outrage about that? Guess the Hon O’Malley was right when she called people who don’t support same sex marriage cowards. We are getting this rammed down our throats and they don’t care. Just keep sending our money in to pay for needless projects.

One could argue from a fiscal standpoint it will generate more income as more couples will pay fees to the state to get their sanctioned marriage. The tax implications of more joint filers are already reality as MD recognized DC gay marriages already!

        Cdev –
One could also argue the point of the state and the counties have to pay for the (rather generous) healthcare and other benefits for the ‘spouses’ of homosexual public employees.
the issue is not a liberty issue, it is a moral issue.
will the courts recognize a gay couple as 2 husbands (NOT a marriage) or as husband and wife? which one is the wife? the more feminine of the two? then why not just seek out a real female?
        Just sayin’.

        good day and God bless
        Jeff

I agree Jeff, it absolutely is a moral issue. It is immoral to limit the rights you enjoy to those who share your narrow worldview. You can attempt to play semantics all you want, but when companies talk about the “Perfect Marriage of Artist and Corporate Partner” the term might not be as sacred as you seem to think, unless there were behind door discussions over who was the wife in that perfect marriage. As to why they don’t just seek out a real female, I fear that explaining that might take up more space than this comment thread allows. But I do have a question. Why THIS issue, and not, say eating seafood? Leviticus is just as strict on that issue, why the double standard?

That is not really a choice of if the court will recognize it. They have to because of the good faith and credit clause! Marriage is a court pronouncement. A DC marriage is good in California, Iowa or Montana. Since the court married them they have to recognize it. My original point is that marriage is simply a way of collecting a fee for me to excercise my religious beliefs!

The People should have a voice and be able to vote. I wish “we the people” got to vote on more. What are you afraid of?

You can not hold a “vote” on basic civil human rights! (Hey, why don’t we let the people decide if they want black people moving into their neighborhood, or if women should be allowed to hold higher leadership jobs/offices – its the same thing!)
Just as you can not discriminate against race, sex, age, physical disabilities, etc., when purchasing a home, applying for a job, adopting a child, access to a public facility…
You can not deny equal rights to law-abiding citizens. Period.

Way to go Marty… nice distraction… fire up interest on an issue that’ll benefit a miniscule percentage of Marylanders to divert attention from your pathetic attempt at a workable budget and the gas tax you need to hammer us with to pay for your chosen career path… Any idiot could just raise taxes.

The amount of “us” who live in this state are by all means not miniscule…..believe me….it is really astonishing what people are afraid of in these times. We have far more pressing issues to be frightened over than some equal tax paying citizens getting equal treatment.

Maybe you’re right… maybe there’s 100,000 folks in Maryland hoping for this bill to fly… that’s still less than 2 percent of the population. It’s funny that I get 4 thumbs down’s without even stating my position on the bill! Frankly, I don’t care if you marry your staple puller I was only pointing out that while folks argue about this hot button issue – just like Marty wants you to – he continues using the population of Maryland to boost his own career and ego. What happened to all the outrage over the gas tax? All he’s done is raise taxes and still spend more than the new taxes bring in…

  5. Jesus was gay - why won't you let homosexuals get married? says

    February 16, 2012 at 12:34 pm

“Because this legislation could affect so many…”, really? Who other than homosexuals is this going to affect? If it affects you and you are not a homosexual, you need to stop worrying about what homosexuals can and can’t do. Maybe you need to realize that you actually are a homosexual. Jesus finally realized it. Why do you think he had so many disciples? Maybe that is why he was crucified.

Stop letting your faith prevent others from enjoying the same freedoms as everyone else.

Marriage = 1 man and 1 woman NOW. Marriage used to be a property arrangement, and it wasn’t all that long ago that polygamy was allowed. So I’m afraid you’re going to have to try just a little harder to justify your bigotry. Hey, I know- say it would undermine YOUR marriage! that’ll do it! Bottom line, gayness is not just a form of sex, it’s a form of love, and if you think it’s a choice, it means you’re considering it.

Agreed. If it was choice as so many like to state, why would you choose to be bullied, harrassed, stared at and reviled. Believe me this is not a choice anyone would make voluntarily. You cannot choose who you love and to have to choose to go out of state to get the fair treatment you deserve and get married doesnt seem like a choice people should have to make. We are all human beings, why cant we treat each other that way and mind our own business…..

sorry, you know what my passion got the best of me. I think it is a shame when you have to defend who you love and others can make the decision for you as to if you can get married or not. I am fine with who I am as I am sure you are. I am simply saying if people who claim that being gay is a choice why would a person choose something that you are going to be constantly picked on for…. why would you choose to be hated. If I had a child I would not choose for them to have to take a hard road. It’s not a choice, it is the way I was born. Society did not make me this way and if you knew me, you would know my lifestyle choices did not force me to be gay either. It just is what it is.
