Two Brothers, Sister from Fallston Killed in Three-Car Crash Near Churchville; State Police Helicopter Catches Fire During Rescue

February 21, 2012 By Dagger News Service 24 Comments

From Maryland State Police:

THREE KILLED IN HARFORD CO. CRASH

Maryland State Police are continuing their investigation into the cause of a three-car crash in Harford County last night that killed three people and injured two others.

The deceased are identified as David S. Bauguess, 29, his sister, Ashley M. Bauguess, 24, and his brother, Joseph M. Bauguess, 17, all of the 1300-block of Marquis Court, Fallston, Md. All three were pronounced dead at the scene. Their bodies were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for autopsies.

All three deceased victims were traveling in a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier registered to Ashley Bauguess. Both male victims were ejected. The female victim remained in the vehicle and appeared to have been wearing a seatbelt. Seatbelt use by the male victims is unknown. Investigators are unable at this time to determine with certainty who was driving the car and where the other two were seated.

The injured are identified as Ryan B. Cooper, 29, of the 100-block of Briarcliff Lane, Bel Air, Md., and Sean P. O’Brien, 30, of the 3700-block of Wolf Trail Drive, Abingdon, Md. Both were traveling in a 2007 Acura sedan registered to Cooper. Both were transported by ambulance to Johns Hopkins Bayview where they are said to be in stable condition.

Two others involved in the crash did not require medical treatment. They are identified as Hua Lin, 30, and Du Gi Lin, 34. Both men live at the same address in the 300-block of South Main Street, Bel Air, Md. They were traveling in a 2010 Toyota sedan.

Just before 10:00 p.m. yesterday, Maryland State Police from the Bel Air Barrack were dispatched to the scene of the three vehicle crash on Rt. 543, about one-half mile south of Wheel Road near Churchville. When troopers and fire department personnel arrived, they found a crash scene that covered about one-tenth of a mile along Rt. 543.

The Maryland State Police CRASH Team responded to the scene to conduct the detailed crash investigation. The preliminary investigation indicates the Chevrolet Cavalier was southbound on Rt. 543 when, for unknown reasons, it crossed the double-yellow line and sideswiped the northbound Toyota driven by Lin.

The force of that initial crash apparently caused the Chevrolet Cavalier to go into a spin and travel sideways into the northbound lane, directly into the path of the oncoming Acura driven by Cooper. The force of that crash split the Cavalier in two.

Other than the preliminary indication that the Chevrolet Cavalier crossed the centerline, the specific cause and contributing factors of the crash have not been determined. CRASH Team members worked through the night collecting evidence at the scene to assist them in determining why this crash occurred.

The extent of the scene caused Rt. 543 to be closed for at least six hours. Officials are hoping to have the roadway open by the morning rush hour.

The investigation is continuing.

STATE POLICE INVESTIGATING HELICOPTER ENGINE MALFUNCTION

Maryland State Police aviation maintenance technicians are investigating why one of two engines on a State Police helicopter malfunctioned and caught fire while the aircraft was landing at an accident scene in Harford County last night.

Shortly after 10:00 p.m. yesterday, fire and rescue personnel on the scene of a three car collision with multiple victims on Rt. 543 south of Wheel Road in Harford County requested medevac assistance from the Maryland State Police Aviation Command. Due to the number of victims possibly needing transport, two State Police helicopters were dispatched to the scene. They were Trooper One, stationed at Martin State Airport and Trooper Two, stationed at Andrews Air Force Base.

When Trooper One arrived on the scene, fire department personnel had established a landing zone in the yard of a residence near the accident scene. While Trooper One was initiating its landing approach, the crew felt a shudder in the aircraft that seemed to come from one of the engines and a caution light illuminated in the cockpit. The pilot immediately initiated precautionary procedures and continued to land the aircraft safely.

The pilot conducted a wheels-down, normal landing and began procedures to shut the aircraft down. The flight paramedic exited the aircraft and fire department personnel on the ground directed his attention to fire that could be seen inside one of the two engines. Fire extinguishers were used to put the fire out. The fire did not spread outside the engine compartment area.

The flight paramedic from the aircraft went to assess the condition of the victims in the crash. Three victims were already pronounced dead at the scene. The conditions of the two injured victims enabled them to be transported to a hospital by ambulance.

At that time, State Police helicopter Trooper Two was circling overhead and was available for medevac transport if needed. Air transport was not necessary and the crew of Trooper Two assisted investigators on the ground by illuminating the area and helping them to ensure no other victims had been ejected from the vehicles involved.

State Police Aviation Command officers and technicians responded to the scene and assessed the aircraft. The American Eurocopter Dauphin helicopter, delivered to the State Police in 1999, was loaded on a flatbed trailer and transported back to Aviation Command headquarters where it will be inspected. State Police Aviation Command officials immediately notified both the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration of this incident.

At this time, there is no indication regarding why this malfunction occurred. One of the most significant benefits of a twin-engine helicopter is that if one of the engines fails, the pilot will be able to continue to safely operate the aircraft using the remaining engine.

Theres no reason other than alchohol for a car to cross the double yellow lines, except that eyes were not on the road, i.e Distracted.

I pray for the family as well. It is a tragedy.

“Theres no reason other than alchohol for a car to cross the double yellow lines,…”

Well, a mechanical failure could also cause a car to cross the lines too……someone having a seizure at the wheel could cause a vehicle to cross…..someone spilling hot coffee on his/her lap could cause a vehicle to cross…..You can’t (shouldn’t) make blanket assumptions without knowing all of the facts.

I get your point, but this isn’t the time/place to assert such narrowly-focused opinions. Maybe just praying for the family will do?

      You truly are an idiot.

“Theres no reason other than alchohol for a car to cross the double yellow lines”…
Here are a few other “reasons”:
      Medical emergency
      Blown tire
      Avoiding an animal
      Avoiding something in the road
      etc…

You shouldn’t avoid an animal in the road, then something like this happens.

This is so sad and tragic. My thoughts and prayers go out to this family!!
Unfortunately, the internet gives the public free access to look into the lives of people and a horrendous tragedy such as this one makes the human mind wonder what could have possibly gone wrong. The facebook pages of two are reflective … and it’s really quite sad. The possibilities that could have led to this unthinkable pain for this family are definitely not good ones.
Peace and comfort, I pray, will wrap the family and friends of these three folks for a very long time to come! :-/

First and foremost, my heartfelt condolences to the Bauguess family. I cannot imagine your pain, and you will remain in my thoughts and prayers.

I am truly dismayed that, after reading this truly tragic story, ANYONE’s first reaction would be searching the Judiciary Case Search for the victims. That their second impulse would be to post on a message board about their findings makes me ill. Anyone who would do such a thing may have a clean criminal record, but I would not go so far as to say he or she was a good person. Remember, that Book people love to quote does say, “Judge not, that ye be not judged.”

No one has mentioned the other two people that were involved in this accident. I pray that they both fully recover. And the two that were fine at the scene, I’m sure they were traumatized by this as well and I pray for their well-being.

I live on Marquis Court and this has been a tragedy beyond belief. I met the Mother 2 days ago and she was in total shock as I would be. My families prayers goes out to them that they can get through this and begin the healing process to bring their family close together. As for Robert Dulsky, the neighbor across the street who was quoted in the Aegis, (2/22/2012) “Everybody Dies, that’s Life”….think first before you make such in-sensitive statements….unreal.
