Maryland Watch: Tommy Carcetti Addresses Democratic National Convention on Ladies’ Night

September 4, 2012 By Martin Watcher 60 Comments

The Governor of Maryland must have some awesome dental insurance because he couldn’t stop showing off those pearly whites last night.

It wasn’t a smirk like he is known for.

It wasn’t a birth of a child or “I just got elected Governor of Maryland”.

It wasn’t a Jameson and Bushmill smile.

It was a “Welcome to Chotchky’s do you like my 37 pieces of flair” smile.

It left me with a case of the Mondays.

He smiled as he talked about the deep recession, he smiled when he talked about record job losses, he smiled when he talked about insurance companies classifying being a woman as a pre-existing condition, he smiled when he talked about Romney cutting taxes on billionaires, firing teachers and police.

But then something happened. He mentioned cutting Medicare again and giving the money to billionaires and he realized he repeated himself and he became angry…and you wouldn’t like him when he’s angry. Is the incredible Hulk going to come out? Wait… wait… oh he’s happy again, thank goodness; he remembered that his handlers wanted him to be Bruce Banner tonight. Back to the smile. I feel much safer now that he’s doing this riff about Swiss bank accounts. And this is where he enters what he figured was his money line, and he delivers it with a head bob that makes you think the smile really was because of some Jamesons or Bushmill, “Governor Romney, just because you bank against the United States of America doesn’t mean any of us are willing to sell her out.” The smile is there the entire time he delivers the canned line.

But the only bit of sincerity that existed in the entire speech was when he was talking about his parents; then that smile faded. It continued through his “how much less” portion, but you could tell that he kept remembering that the handler told him to smile more because it would creep back in. Again, not a smirk, but this used car salesman smile that makes you feel a little dirty.

With the exception of discussing his parents and what that led to, everything about the speech was fake and overly enthusiastic. From the podium pounding to the “Forward, Not Back”, there was nothing real there and that’s where the Governor really missed his opportunity.

And it was a rare opportunity he was given since his Hillary Clinton backing made it so he didn’t have a speaking role in 2008. And unfortunately for Governor O’Malley, he doesn’t have another 8 years to get another opportunity to make a new impression because 2016 is coming fast.

Wow, what a column on your esteemed governor. Most of my friends in Maryland can’t stand the guy. Maryland, my former home, is now the most liberal state in the country. It is also in the top four as being the most expensive to live in. It’s interesting that one can live a little over a mile from Maryland and live in a completely different world. By now you probably know that I live in PA and escaped from Maryland many years ago and will never live in Maryland again.

O’Malley wants to be president, and that has been obvious from day one as he showed those shiny teeth every time he opened his mouth. It may be difficult for him to attain that position as the Republicans have a whole stable of bright, young people who could challenge him.

Perhaps someday we will be able to close the borders so that folks like you will be forced to stay in your new home state and enjoy the services they provide, as well as the income level you can expect, without the state of Maryland interfering with your chosen lifestyle.

O’Malley’s speech reminded me of Jack Fitzgerald’s auto commercials with the notable exception that Fitzgerald does a better job (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqMUMGJ6B-4).

For a high school pep rally, maybe O’Malley earns a B. “What do you want?” “MORE…JOBS!…EDUCATION!…ROADS!” “Who isn’t going to give it to us?” “Governor Romney!”

Thus completes the national footnote for Martin O’Malley.

As a lifelong Marylander, I am profoundly embarrassed whenever MOM has access to a microphone with a national any audience. When he doesn’t exude overwhelming smarm, we are witness to phoniness of the highest order.

Although he wins honorable mention for Most Improved DNC speaker, it is nonetheless painful to have to endure.

He fits right in with the rest of those liberal story tellers. If Americans are so dumb not to see that Obama’s policies are un-American, as he and his wife are also, and we are worse off than 4 years ago, then they deserve this idiot for President for 4 more years. Sadly, our children and future Americans don’t deserve him. I hope better sense prevails in this election and people make a decision on something other than race and his charisma. Adolf Hitler had great charisma also.

Ironic how your statements about Obama are so pertinent to Jesse Bane. Bane is a liberal, union puppet, truth be damned, story teller who takes credit for everyone else’s ideas and efforts. To compare him or anyone to Hitler seems a bit extreme, but your point is taken. Obama, O’Malley, and Bane, same party, same ideas, hopefully same unemployment line for all three.

No, onpoint, you are wrong. Don’t put people in neat little compartments where one size fits all. That is why I don’t go to Campaign for Liberty meetings. I like to think for myself and I have been following politics in this county for a lot of years and that includes the election for Sheriff. Every 4 years we go through this crap and anyone who has been in this county for 25 years knows it. Marc Eaton talks about the Sheriff’s Office he knew is gone. So are a lot of things, including unopposed sheriff elections as in the days of Bill Kunkel. I am a Republican whether you will acknowledge it or not. I have been a Republican all of my life. That does not mean that I only vote for Republicans and that is because I try to choose who I think is best. No, Jessee is not a macho sheriff. He does care about people and treats the public with respect. Deputies work for the sheriff and they are also voters. If they feel he is too tough to work for, then they should vote against him. But some of the crap that comes across this site is incredible. A lot of it is nothing more than conjecture when it comes to what he knows or what he thinks. A lot of deputies liked Meadows because he acted macho which some liked. It didn’t play well with the citizenry who paid his salary. He never served a day as a deputy of any rank, yet that was the good old days. It is crap. Be honest, it is an election for sheriff, and each side wants to win. The rest of the posters are tea baggers or Campaign for Liberty Members. While I respect their objectives, you still have to think and use your own judgement on what priorities mean. This RINO label is equal to anyone who disagrees with Obama being racist.

Just because God is in your platform does not mean you are any of the sort. Anybody can profess to be doing “Gods Will”. And many a dictator since civilization started has wiped out thousands in doing so. The Crusades were all about putting God first…on the tip of a sword while wiping out civilizations who did not confess and pay to the church.

I’d rather see parties walk the walk, than sit there and talk the talk. hypocrisy at its finest.

Onpoint, you don’t know much history either do you? Had you ever read how Hitler came to power you would understand the danger we are facing now. It isn’t hearsay information, it is a fact. Tell me o’ wise one, how this president could be elected without any qualifications or experience running even a small business. I have never heard of a president of this country sealing his birth certificate, college information, and have no friends from the past. Tell me how this president could pass a major health care law without the congress (Democrats) not knowing what was in it and that included the Speaker of the House. Tell me how a man who had served as president for two months was given the Nobel Peace Prize and fighting a war in Afghanistan. Tell me how he defies Arizona’s attempt to keep out illegal aliens. Tell me about his position on the American flag, that the U.S. is no longer a Christian nation, no longer attends the National Day of Prayer but does attend Muslim activites, on gun control, and why has the Social Security Administration bought hollow point amunition. Tell me how he feels on redistributing the wealth. Tell me about the backgrounds of many of his cabinent members. Adolph Hitler came to power not by revolution, but by slowly taking over the democratic government of Germany. He, too, was a great speaker and very charismatic. He also promised change for Germany, and he delivered it. It wasn’t the change that they thought it would be. So, Onpoint, what I am saying is read history instead of some of the posters on this site. You might actually learn something.

as president, Clinton supported the 1999 repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act, a law dating back to the Great Depression that separated banking from high-risk financial speculation. Robert Rubin, who had been Clinton’s first treasury secretary, helped broker the final deal on Capitol Hill that enabled the repeal legislation to pass. Some financial historians say the repeal of the law paved the way for banks to invest in risky investments like mortgage-backed securities and collateralized debt obligations that played a role in the 2008 financial meltdown. This is for all of you Democrats who like to blame Bush for the economy that Obama “inherited”. It amazes me that so many people allow Obama to blame the lack of jobs on the Bush presidency four years later. Informed people know that unemployment has gotten worse during Obama’s four years.

To whom it may concern: If you’re arguing facts with a liberal, you’re wasting your time. If they can’t “feel” it, they can’t understand it, and they certainly don’t use facts often to support their positions. Someone rightfully just said, if you think there’s no voter fraud in the Democratic Party, just take a look about letting GOD back in. All three times they voted no, but the Mayor of San Francisco “ay’ed” in the affirmative.
