NEWS FROM THE ARTS

WELCOME TO DEER CREEK COFFEE HOUSE!
John Flynn performs at the Deer Creek Coffeehouse!
February 9, 2013 at 7:30 p.m.
Location: Grace Memorial Episcopal Church Parish Hall 1022 Main St., Darlington, MD 21034
In an era of deep division, John Flynn’s songs call us together as they speak for the wounded, the weary, and the afflicted; for the prisoner, the soldier, and all the forgotten ones who walk unseen in our midst. Fusing the vision of an activist with the unblinking eye of a truth-teller, John Flynn’s music speaks deeply to the heart and the spirit. A wordsmith and poet of rare clarity, he evokes our shared humanity as he addresses the times we live in through songs that resound with awareness, irony, humor and compassion.

Today, John’s shows draw from a significant body of work, ranging from his early country offerings to story songs, love songs, songs for kids, funny songs, songs of social justice, and meditations on loss, tolerance, faith and hope. The 54 year-old father of four spurned touring when his children were young, but as the kids grew older superlatives began to welcome their dad’s arrival to the national folk stage. In 2005, Arlo Guthrie invited John to join musical legends like Willie Nelson and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott on the historic “Train to New Orleans” tour following Hurricane Katrina. And Ticket Magazine wrote that “John Flynn is at the near end of a long line of American poets, thinkers and folk artists stretching from Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Walt Whitman, all the way up to Kris Kristofferson”

His 2004 album “Dragon” was among the twenty most played albums in folk music of the year. It continues to receive extensive international airplay. One track from the CD, “Angel Dawson,” was included in the 2005 season finale of the CBS network television show Joan of Arcadia.

HEALTH NEWS

With the arrival of frigid winter weather, the Harford County Health Department reminds residents to take necessary precautions to prevent serious health and safety concerns.

Preparing for exposure to colder temperatures can mean the difference between staying healthy and the possibility of serious injury or even death.

To find more cold weather safety tips and to view weekly DHMH Cold Weather Reports posted each Wednesday, visit http://dhmh.maryland.gov/winterrpts or the DHMH homepage at www.dhmh.maryland.gov and click on “Cold Weather Facts” under “Hot Topics.”. More information also is available on the Harford County Health Department website, www.harfordcountyhealth.com .

The Health Department reminds the public that Influenza illness cannot be taken lightly. Strains of influenza currently circulating are typical in terms of historical severity and frequency. Early indications are that this season has been worse than the past two seasons that were characterized as mild flu seasons.

Although surveillance indicators are mixed, the most recent Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene reports indicate that for the fourth straight week, flu remains widespread in every region in Maryland and that the flu’s intensity level remains high.

Ms. Kelly reminds the public that it is not too late to benefit from being vaccinated and that it remains the best method for preventing influenza as well as the potentially severe complications in children and adults the flu can cause. Vaccination is recommended for any person older 6 months of age in order to prevent the flu and its complications. Individuals at highest risk from flu complications include children younger than 5 years old, including children younger than 6 months of age who are too young to be vaccinated, children and adults with chronic medical conditions like asthma, diabetes, and heart disease and adults 65 years and older.

Ms. Kelly also urges county residents to also continue practicing basic flu protection and prevention measures, including:

– frequent hand-washing, especially after coughing or sneezing ? covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing

– discarding tissues immediately after use

– avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth

– staying home and limiting contact with others if you are sick with flu-like symptoms

– avoiding close contact with sick people

More information on seasonal influenza is available on the Harford County Health Department website, at www.harfordcountyhealth.com, or by calling 410-612-1781. Comprehensive flu information also is available by visiting or the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene website at http://ideha.dhmh.maryland.gov/influenza/SitePages/Home.aspx and the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website at http://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/preventing.htm.

NEWS FROM THE HARFORD COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

The Harford County Sheriff’s Office is once again offering Harford County residents the opportunity to attend the annual Citizens Police Academy – a 15 week program designed to provide residents with a better understanding of the Sheriff’s Office and its operations and to foster a partnership between the Sheriff’s Office and the communities it serves.

This year’s academy, which is free of charge, will be held every Tuesday evening beginning March 5, 2013 through June 13, 2013, and is open to any Harford County resident 18 years of age or older.
