15-Yr-Old Girl Charged with Arson in Edgewood Dwelling Fire; Allegedly Ignited Couch after Dispute with Father

March 12, 2013 By Dagger News Service 18 Comments

From the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal:

Deputy State Fire Marshals have concluded an investigation into the origin and cause for the fire that heavily damaged a home located in the 1700 block of Harbinger Trail in Edgewood on Saturday, March 9, 2013.

The Harford County Sheriff’s Office responded to the address for a 911 hang-up call to the Harford County Emergency Operations Center. Upon arrival, deputies heard the sound of a smoke alarm and observed a couch on fire in the basement of the home. The fire departments and the Office of the State Fire Marshal were promptly dispatched to the scene.

Investigators determined the occupants fifteen year-old daughter intentionally ignited a fire using a liquid accelerant in the basement of their home after a dispute with her father. The one alarm fire quickly spread throughout the two story, split level home and caused an estimated $200,000 in damage before being extinguished by nearly fifty firefighters from Joppa, Abingdon, Bel Air, Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Kingsville and White Marsh Volunteer Fire Departments.

Two firefighters received injuries during the incident. One firefighter was transported to Johns Hopkins Bayview Burn Center for minor burns to the back of the neck and released. The other firefighter was treated and released from Upper Chesapeake Medical Center for respiratory issues.

The youth has been referred to the Harford County Department of Juvenile Services on charges of: 1st Degree Arson, 1st Degree Malicious burning and (2) counts of Reckless Endangerment.

It is not really her fault. Her mind is not fully developed. She may be stuck in time from several years ago because she was abused in some manner.

Did she try to dump the couch in a pond afterward?

She will probably need to be locked up in a juvenile facility. If not, expect protests.

Maybe she can keep Robby company?

      Poe,

They were making references to the Robby case, the young “kid” who admittedly shot his own father in cold blood.

In a heated discussion on a previous article, many of Robby’s defenders made the statement that because he was abused, his mind did not develop, and he was acting like a child…therefore not fully knowing what he did was wrong.

Yeah, premeditated murder, attempting to dump / hide the body, then lead police on a chase through an occupied area is acting like a child. He MUST have been in his wrong mind to do that…

The answer to this problem is simple. Require everyone who wants to buy matches, lighters or lighter fluid to be finger printed, limit them to 1 purchase per month and register their purchases. If this doesn’t work add a tax of $1.00 per match and $10.00 per lighter.

Shouldn’t a matchbook be restricted to 10 matches or less as well?

Had the proper regulations been in place, this young lady would not have been able to get her hands on matches, lighters, or an accelerate or any kind. Obviously this young lady has something wrong with her noggin, and a check of her mental health records would have revealed she should in no way be permitted access to matches, lighters or accelerates. This did not have to happen. Wake up America!

Yeah. A dispute with her father. So burn down the house. Makes perfect sense. Even if she has a history of abuse that is not an excuse to commit arson. Was she hoping her father was inside???? She could have gotten charged with attempt murder…

Anyone who basically lights their own house on fire has issues beyond a criminal act. This lady needs a straightjacket and should be off the streets and medicated. Don’t care how much her parents want her back; the neighbors need to be protected. If she’s mad at a jaywalker does she deliberately run them down with her car?

I have known this family my entire life, and I can assure each of you, that this young lady comes from a VERY Loving family, and in no way was she ever abused! If you call a father disciplining his child and trying to make sure she has parameters, abuse, than to each their own, and you then would be wrong in your judgment. The child does have some history of mental health issues, which she had been treated for and was being treated for, but no one could have ever imagined that it would lead to this! So, before blaming a community oriented, loving family for the trangressions of their loved child, please make sure you know the entire history of that family and the people that your comments may affect. By the way, each of us should also look in the mirror and realize we ALL have issues of some kind, or our loved ones deal with some kind of issues that may have an affect on each of us, so, lets just look at this as what it is, a TRAGIC event that has impacted the lives of a very Loving family, that is undeserving of any negative press or comments.

They won’t be able to collect tax on banned substances. Unless, of course, they come up with an “Illegal Possession of Banned Items by Criminals Tax”.
