12-Yr-Old Girl Falls from King and Queen Seat in Rocks State Park; Flown to Trauma Center

May 26, 2013 By Dagger News Service 10 Comments

A 12 year old girl suffered multiple injuries after falling between 40-50 ft from the King & Queens Seat while climbing in Rocks State Park on Saturday afternoon.

According to Rich Gardiner, spokesman for the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association, the girl was flown to regional trauma center, but no update on her condition was available Sunday morning. Three Department of Natural Resources officers also suffered minor injuries during the incident.

Lieutenant Bryan Schulz of the Jarrettsville Volunteer Fire Company described the rescue as such:

“At approximately 15:30 the Jarrettsville Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a rescue at the Rocks State Park “King and Queen Seat.” The subject had fallen approximately 40 feet off the rocks onto unsteady ground. Crews secured a safe scene and stabilized the patient using a stokes basket with assistance from the Harford County Technical Rescue Team (TRT). The patient was then lowered using the stokes basket and a rope system to more stable ground. Crews used a gator from Whiteford VFC to move the patient to the base of the trail to an awaiting Medic unit. The patient was flown via Trooper 1 to a trauma center for further evaluation.”

Miraculously, NO head trauma. NO spinal cord damage. Some kidney, spleen and lung bruising and laceration but all were under control quickly and are healing.
Expecting a relatively long recovery/rehad from multiple skeletal fractures but currently no reason to believe there will be very major lasting effects of the event.

By all rights, things should be MUCH worse than they are; thank God they aren’t.

People who helped on the scene with girl and her family were WONDERFUL. People in general are caring and giving. People who frequent places like Rock’s and the K&Q seat are just an exceptional example of that.

On a slightly different topic, NO ONE should suggest that accidents like this should result in restriction of access to or modification of the environment to prevent them in the future at K&Q. It’s a very beautiful place that like all natural locations require an appropriate level of respect. Mistakes, errors in judgement, accidents all happen and always will. Consequences can be very difficult to live with. Learn from others’ experiences and be appropriately careful and attentive.

Thank you so much for the update!! My friends and I were picnicking in the Hillsgrove section of the RSP when the accident occurred. We were asked to move up to the restrooms for the helicopter to land. We cautiously and quietly watched and waited, praying as we were waiting. Seemed like an incredibly long time after the copter landed until the ambo arrived. We were not aware of the whole situation, obviously until we got home. We were not aware that there was a rescue taking place. Heads up and heartfelt thank yous to everyone involved in the rescue including my buddy, Nicki with DNR!!

Was she mountaineering or just playing on the rocks?

There’s a big difference. If mountaineering I’d expect she would have been using a harness, belay, helmet, etc.
