Aberdeen to Receive $1.2 Million from State to Acquire 21 Acres for New Rock Glenn Park

October 21, 2013 By Dagger News Service 12 Comments

From the Maryland Department of Natural Resources:

Recreational Projects in Carroll, Frederick, Kent and Harford counties will soon receive funding for upgrades through Program Open Space. Governor Martin O’Malley and the Board of Public Works approved the projects.

“These outdoor areas promote active lifestyles, provide families with safe, convenient places to spend quality time with one another, and build a sense of community by strengthening ties among residents.” said Governor O’Malley.

Carroll County’s town of Union Bridge will receive $31,400 to develop the third, and final, phase of its wetland trails project at Little Pipe Creek Trail to allow users to explore more of the park’s natural resources. The existing 5-foot wide by 3,500-foot long pathway will be extended by 1,800 linear feet, completing approximately one mile of looped trail inside of Little Pipe Creek Wetlands Park. Funds totaling $41,522 were previously approved by the Board of Public Works

Frederick County’s town of Walkersville will receive $39,015 to renovate the pavilion at Heritage Farm Park and extend the existing walking trails by approximately 4,000 feet.

Kent County will receive $219,677 to develop three multi-purpose fields, including grading, athletic goals, team benches and bleachers at Worton Park/Community Center Campus. The county will also receive $24,300 ? $8,100 per facility ? to install an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant portable pool lifts at Bayside Pool in Rock Hall, Millington Pool and Worton Park.

Harford County’s city of Aberdeen will receive $1.2 million to acquire 21 acres for its new Rock Glenn Park.

Under the leadership of Governor O’Malley, the Board of Public Works has approved funding for 1,285 recreational projects, including Community Parks & Playgrounds, totaling more than $344 million through local-side Program Open Space since 2007.

I like how all of these towns ‘receive’ money, like it just falls from the sky. Every penny came out of somebody’s pocket.

Aberdeen festival park is overrun by homeless people. Hell, even a church comes to feed them on certain days!

Stop feeding them. Again, all of those on here who so adamantly bash religion, and preach the word of Darwin should indeed practice what they preach. In your Utopian world of Survival of the fittest, there is no room for welfare programs or helping those whom refuse to help themselves. Stop feeding stray cats.

Hey V.V., you are correct sir! Also, the location for this proposed park is a joke. It’s sandwiched between a medical products distribution warehouse and the CSX railroad! Wow…who’s going to want to play at a park with “a view to kill” like that? Finally, the price per acre is WAY too high for this low valued land. There are properties at better locations, with better views, for a much cheaper price per acre available today! (think of the property around and between Ripken Stadium / Eagles Rest / The Wetlands / etc. Regarding the proposed park area, the City of Aberdeen has changed the zoning 2 (if not 3) times in the past few years to accomodate the owners / developers request to market the property for residentail / commercial / etc. (Streett, Cox, Hockaday are the owners), and still no interested parties for development! What a shame (and a sham) that our state tax dollars will be spent to bail out wealthy developers in the name of “Program Open Space” to create a park in a lousy setting that will probably not be used, when a park could be built for much less, AND at a better location while still in Aberdeen. Way to go Maryland and City of Aberdeen! 🙁

I don’t have a problem with grants of this sort, but it would be nice if the Town
had applied for a grant to help the Harford County Historical Society in its
effort to restore the B&O Train Station.

That is the last station of its sort designed by the famed architect Frank Furness, and
the Town seems totally disinterested in preserving it. For a town with virtually no appeal to visitors/tourists, you’d think the City leaders would wise up.

Who owns the land next to the train station?

        Who owns the mayor?

Since I’m not from Aberdeen I don’t know. I infer from your comment that it’s someone with an interest is seeing the station demolished, if only by neglect.

Of particular amusement is Carroll County spending $31,400 for extending an existing 5 ft. wide path another 1,800 ft. Awesome – Lisanta and Craig want to spend over $2,000,000 for just about the same thing.

Funny, in a previous article about this project, it said Aberdeen needed the land for lacrosse and soccer fields. Aberdeen doesn’t have a rec lacrosse program and can’t field soccer teams at all the age groups. But their mayor is an O’Malley supporter!
