Harford County Tallies Benefits from Filming of “House of Cards” Season Two

February 19, 2014 By Dagger News Service 6 Comments

From Harford County Government:

(Bel Air, MD) – House of Cards (HOC) Season Two airs on Netflix. Most of the filming and production of HOC occurs in the Harford County area. Knight Takes King Productions leased an additional 91,850 square feet in Joppa in December 2013, bringing their total leased space in Harford County to 190,000 square feet.

Season One production directly purchased or rented goods or services from over 300 Harford County businesses and 1,814 Maryland businesses statewide. This does not count any personal money spent in the County by cast and crew. The production employed 2,198 Marylanders as cast, extras and crew. The production also utilized over 4,600 room nights with hotels in the county during its first season. The Maryland Film Office reports an economic impact to Maryland of $138 million.

Jim Richardson, Director of Economic Development for Harford County stated, “We are all excited to watch Season Two. Eileen Frado, Senior Business Development Associate, from our office regularly assists the production crew in securing locations and other necessities for their filming needs. Many Harford County businesses have benefited from the economic impact of this production. It’s also interesting to watch for local people we know in the background of a scene with Kevin Spacey or Golden Globe Award Winner Robin Wright.”

During Season Two of the production, crews directly purchased or rented goods or services from 276 Harford County businesses. This does not count the in-direct purchases at Harford County stores, restaurants and bars by cast and crew. Some of the local companies who have benefitted from House of Cards include: Arrow Electrical Supply, Beavers Auto Body Repair, Bel Air Sew and Vac, Bicycle Connection, Chesaco RV, Clarks Show Repair, Edgewood Thrift, FN Smith Hardware, Harford Rental Service, Joe’s Watch Repair, Jones Family Farm, The Mill of Bel Air, Tractor Supply Company, Wirtz and Daughters Garden Center.

According to the Baltimore Sun, Kevin Spacey, the star and executive producer of the House of Cards has confirmed that he will return when the Netflix series starts filming its third season in the Harford County and Baltimore area.

Don’t forget Wegmans. Food for the cast and crew are ordered and picked up daily.

lots of hotel tax revenue lost that would have relieved the burden of the property tax payer in the county. Clearly the county can do better as can our state representatives in bringing our county in line with most other counties in Maryland. Imagine an untapped and sure source of revenue that isn’t actually paid by Harford residents? Is the tea party for anything that makes sense?

My experience with “House of Cards” isn’t as nice as those mentioned above. Last May 22 I was sitting in my car, stopped behind three others, as someone waited to turn into Trinity Lutheran most likely dropping off a child at school. It was 8:10 a.m.. Anyone who has travelled down Route 7 at that juncture knows that there’s no point accelerating fast because beyond the curve you will most likely stop due to traffic. Plus, there’s a BIG sign stating it’s a school zone. Anyway, as I sat and looked in my rear view mirror I saw a car coming around the bend. This vehicle wasn’t slowing down, au contraire, the driver was accelerating. The last image I recall before unconsciousness set in due to a high velocity impact from a motor vehicle, was the car getting ready to slam me from behind. Thankfully when I then struck the vehicle in front of me it wasn’t as painful due to being knocked out. Where am I going with this and what’s the point as to “House of Cards?” The perpetrator of this crime was an out of state cinematographer driving a rental card at the speed of sound. I’m still unable to move my neck and suffer with intense pain each and every day. So, even though I’ve never seen the show and hear it’s excellent, my experience as a Harford County resident hasn’t been so fruitful.

The above four dislikes must be the same folks who left me lying in my car and never asked if I were still alive. Good ol’ humanity…..thanks.
