UPDATED: Harford County Emergency Responders Assist Baltimore Counterparts

April 28, 2015 By Aaron Cahall 10 Comments

A group of deputies from the Harford County Sheriff’s Office was deployed to one of the most unstable areas of Baltimore Tuesday evening to assist police from around the region in controlling unrest roiling through the city.

The Sheriff’s Office sent 22 deputies to assist police in Baltimore overnight; those personnel returned to Harford County Tuesday morning, Kahler said. A second contingent of the same number of deputies was deployed Tuesday to the area of North Avenue between Fulton and Pennsylvania avenues, a site that was the epicenter of violent protests which broke out Monday afternoon.

Kahler said the deputies volunteered to render assistance and are working on overtime.

In a social media post, Aberdeen Mayor Michael Bennett confirmed that officers from the Aberdeen Police Department had also responded to help the Baltimore City Police Department.

“The City of Aberdeen has sent our Deputy Police Chief along with a Cpl. and police officer to be part of a response with the Harford County Sheriff’s Office to the City of Baltimore. Please keep them in your prayers as we look to have a quiet evening,” Bennett wrote.

The Bel Air and Fallston volunteer fire companies also sent equipment and personnel to Baltimore Tuesday morning, joining a number of jurisdictions from around the region in aiding the city’s fire department.

According to Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company spokesman Rich Gardiner, donations of supplies for emergency responders downtown began pouring into the company’s Hickory Avenue headquarters Tuesday morning. Donations included a large contribution from the Havre de Grace Pepsi plant, as well as a delivery truck from a Riverside rental company.

“The outpouring (no pun intended) of donations has been astronomical,” Gardiner wrote in a social media posting. “There have been cars lined up in front of the BAVFC all morning long, non stop bringing in food and drink for those downtown.”

Any credibility to reports of looting along the 40 corridor in Edgewood? Heard Big Lots got hit.

Not true, according to Harford County Sheriff’s Office. A rumor got started and they’ve had to go out there a few times. We’re working on a separate story to try and clarify the incidents in Edgewood today.

Deerfield Elementary and Edgewood High School were on lockdown this morning. I heard there were shots fired but nothing’s been clarified.

I think ‘confirmed’ is the word you were looking for … and there is nothing on the HCPS website referencing your rumor, so probably not. They do however mention cancelling field trips to the city through 5/1.
If people are in fact seeing postings on social media, why not copy them here? Maybe some of these kids’ parents will see them and start reigning them in. Just the names and profile pics should cover it, none of the comments would be necessary. There is no promise of privacy on FB, etc!! If you post it on Social Media, it’s fair game – call them out!

        Good afternoon.

Today, four schools in the Edgewood area, Edgewood High, Middle, Elementary and Deerfield Elementary School were placed on lockdown following an incident to which the Harford Sheriff’s Office responded. The incident was not related to the events occurring in Baltimore City, and our students were never in any danger. Any time an incident like this occurs in our community, schools may be required to go on lockdown. The students schedule is not disrupted and learning continues in the classrooms. Please note that the Harford County Sheriff’s Office reported on their Facebook page that this isolated incident was safely concluded and the lockdown was lifted within a very short time.

We ask you to continue to follow us on Facebook and Twitter for updates that affect Harford County Public Schools.

        Thank you.

This e-mail has been sent to you by HARFORD COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT. To maximize their communication with you, you may be receiving this e-mail in addition to a phone call with the same message.

They “volunteered” but are being paid OT.

    Sweet!

Of course they are being paid. Sheriff Gahler is not pulling from our communitis to assist with the efforts in Baltimore. Deputies are working those details while off duty. They volunteer to serve the civilians in Baltimore but must be compensated so they are covered by workers compensation for reasons such as the other night, when they were violently assaulted.

Blue’s Clues is absolutely right. It was volunteer-based initially over the weekend (with overtime pay), however now if a deputy is called upon/scheduled they must go. The on-duty road deputies are not being pulled during their regular shifts so the county is still adequately covered as usual, however off-duty road deputies as well as special ops deputies are doing 12-hour shifts downtown to assist Baltimore City Police.
