U.S. Sen. Mikulski Joins Sit-In on Floor of House of Representatives Demanding Vote on Legislation to Curb Gun Violence

June 22, 2016 By Dagger News Service 37 Comments

From the office of U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski:

WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.), today joined with House and Senate Democrats for a sit-in on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives led by Civil Rights Movement leader and Congressman John Lewis (D-Ga.). Members are calling for an up or down vote on legislation to curb gun violence in the wake of the recent mass shooting in Orlando.

Senator Mikulski was joined on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives by Senator Ben Cardin, and Representatives Steny H. Hoyer, Elijah E. Cummings, Chris Van Hollen, C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger, John P. Sarbanes, Donna F. Edwards and John Delaney (all D-Md.)

Senator Mikulski’s statement follows:

“Today I joined with House Democrats in calling for ‘No break, no vote.’ The Democrats want to offer a bill to close the terrorist loophole, so that if you’re on the No Fly List, you should not be able to buy a gun.

“The Republican leadership has refused to give them a vote. They’ve tried every parliamentary maneuver. Now they’re doing a sit-in, led by the historic civil rights leader John Lewis. They sat down. And when they sat down, Senate Democrats stood up. I wanted to be alongside them and went over to join the protest. Because in America, we should be able to have our day and our say to protect the people.

“Today we’re protesting because the House of Representatives can’t even get a vote or a debate. Instead, Democrats are being shut out from even being able to bring up their ‘No Fly, No Buy’ bill. Instead, House Republicans are planning to go out on Friday for yet another vacation. They’re saying to Speaker Ryan, ‘Please don’t take another vacation. We cannot take a vacation on our responsibility to protect the American people.’

“The House of Representatives is planning to sit in a long time. I took over some protein bars. The Senate is planning to send over supper. I joined in the filibuster earlier this week to get a similar vote in the United States Senate. Today I’m standing in solidarity with my colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives.”

Sounds like the Democrats are having a retro moment and tend to remember the 60’s protesting movements. I thought our elected officials were grown-ups that appreciated the rules and decorum of congress on behalf of the people they represent. A sit-in is such a juvenile act!!

Instead of infringing on the rights of law-abiding citizens to own guns, how about some strict penalties for the misuse of firearms?

Strict penalties have been on the books for firearms related crimes for many years, BUT the Democrats refuse to allow them to be enforced. When firearms laws are broken and arrests are made, liberal judges don’t give the offenders the maximum penalties. It is a disgusting world that we live in!

Thousands shot and hundreds killed in Chicago and none of these Dems give a damn. Oh yeah. they can’t highlight the absolute failure of their gun control policies there. But these scumbags will stand on the slaughtered innocent bodies in Orlando to advance an agenda to disarm law abiding citizens. They are a disgrace.

In reference to Chicago and for that matter the whole country, holding people accountable, particularly black people, is not in the best interest of the Democrats. Mikulski is is really a tool. People have suggested that she is gay and that is her business. I don’t care. What I do care about is her diminishing of the radial Islamic terrorist elements of the Orlando incident in her crusade to make points and be a friend to the LGBT community. The people in that club were targeted because they were infidels not LGBT. Now she wants to start a crusade against guns instead of addressing her Muslim friends. She can’t be gone soon enough for me.

You folks are idiots. The Republicans in the Republican controlled House are a bunch of pussies that cow-tow to their main campaign account funding source….The N.R.A.! 90% of Americans (gun owners like myself) agree with the common sense legislation that the Democrats are advocating, BUT because the Republicans are afraid that the N.R.A. will stop funding their respective campaigns AND support candidates to run against them in their primaries, they always vote against what is best for America.
This is the truth (and Dagger readers know it), but you will now see an avalanche of comments against the truthful statements that I have just made (aka….lies!).

If there was a way to get yourself removed from the no fly list I would be with you, but since there is not a way to get yourself removed, you cannot be for this legislation unless you are against the constitution.

How can you allow a bureaucrat to take away a constitutional right with no due process?

The NRA supported the Republican sponsored bill but put the onus on government to prove within a 3 day window the justification for being on the list. It’s called due process and it’s a constitutional right. Explain to me how that bill wasn’t enough for the gun grabbers?

I love the call for “common sense legislation” as if that were the only bench mark for laws. Sure, “no fly, no buy” sounds so reasonable doesn’t it? It’s just that pesky Constitution and the promise of freedom it conveys that keeps getting in the way… also, since the no fly is administered by… no one seems to know… and the method of getting off of it is… no one seems to know… and you can be placed there without even knowing you’re on it without due process, I’m sorry, I forgot, how is this common sense again? Sure, lets allow some faceless bureaucrat with no accountability (gee, that describes 99% of federal employees, doesn’t it?) suspend our Constitutional rights. IMO, they wanted a vote on a bill that they knew would never stand up to challenge so they can go back home and campaign that the opposition voted to kill all of us. It’s Kabuki Theater for fundraising. They had the White House and both houses for two years and never brought up what they’re so passionate about now. Politicians suck.

Where is the sit-in to stop the flow of millions of undocumented people that have been allowed to flow into the United States! Everyone knows who and what is causing this carnage but it does not fit the liberal left narrative. These liberals label the millions of gun owners as terrorists, meantime the real terrorists should be welcomed and with love, compassion and benefits paid for by US Citizen tax dollars.

Liberals make me sick to my stomach, any reason to chip away at the second amendment instead of addressing the real problem.

I know its all been asked before but please explain to me how disarming law abiding citizens while empowering criminals is going to work. The dems/libs will NOT lock up the criminals, slow immigration or even prosecute gangers. The do not fly list is a joke as seen by the Orlando shooter and no one except a few bureaucrats knows how people get on of off it. Even members of congress have been accidently put on it.

You will never get any Democrat/Liberal/Socialist/Communist/Marxist or Kool-Aid drinker to be able to give you a logical answer to your question. Cities and state that allow concealed carry and abide by the 2nd Amendment have much lower crime rates that cities and states that are anti-gun have strict laws against gun ownership to allow law-abiding people to defend themselves against criminal activities. Start with Chicago, Baltimore, Washington, DC, Oregon, New York, New York City, Massachusetts and the majority of Democrat controlled states. Also, take a look at the homicide rates in England where even the police cannot carry firearms unless they are part of a special unit! Australia confiscated all legal firearms from all legal citizens several years ago…..homicide rate soared to nearly a 300% increase!

The Democrats want total control of of the lives of every law-abiding American citizen and when that happens, we will be done as a Sovereign Nation.

        From Snopes:

“The Australia-wide percentage of homicides committed with firearms is now lower than it was before the gun buy-back program, and lower than it has been at any point during the past ten years.”

Which type of “ganger” do you want them to prosecute: the head of a gang of laborers especially on canals or railways, a Scottish alternative rock band, a manufactured biological creature in the BBC Doctor Who universe, a village in Haryana, India or a Norwegian holding company for the Olsen family?

Just what would the current gun restriction proposals do to prevent such incidents as Orlando? Is this just more of the “we have to do SOMETHING” syndrome? I recommend a campaign to enlist, train and arm law abiding citizens with concealed carry permits No one returned fire to this animal and he most likely knew this was a voluntary “gun free zone” based on the clientele. With an armed citizenry sub-human scum such as this killer might think twice about their actions. At a minimum, there would be someone around to return fire and in this case, save many lives. Let’s stop blaming the guns and making them the political pawns in this debate that never gets to the core of the problem.

It took an army of highly trained police swat force to dispatch this nutjob after a 2 hour confrontation. If you think some fruit topping drinking in a bar with a sidearm would have somehow made a difference the government should take your gun immediately.

Ban assault weapons in 50 states (not just 7)
Mandate smart guns to prevent accidents, especially among children.
Mandate License and Registration in all 50 States. (Cars are deadly weapons ,so are guns)
Mandate safety training despite what Sheriff Gahler and NRA say. NRA just a bloody lobby for gun makers.
    Mandate safe storage.
