CALLING ALL STUDENT FILMMAKERS: John Carroll to Host First-Ever Student Film Festival

John Carroll is hosting its first-ever student-run film festival to showcase and celebrate talent by student filmmakers. The festival will take place on March 26, 2010 in the John Carroll School Auditorium at 7:00 p.m.

Students in high school and college are eligible to submit a film for consideration by the festival judges. The film must be at least 30 seconds and no longer than 20 minutes in length. Objectionable content will not be accepted (keep the rating between G and PG-13!).

Long (10-20 minutes) and short (less than 10 minutes) films will be divided into three categories: comedy, drama, and animation.

All films must be submitted on a DVD along with a completed information sheet. You can download the information sheet HERE.

Bel Air Film Festival to Showcase Local Talent on Sunday

This weekend, the Town of Bel Air Film Festival is being held at the Bel Air Reckord Armory on N. Main Street.

The festival opened on Friday with guest speaker Michael Sragow, film critic for the Baltimore Sun, and a screening of the 1937 Victor Fleming film Captains Courageous. Two films were screened on Saturday: first, the award-winning documentary Afghan Star, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and then, The English Surgeon, a documentary that depicts the dilemmas of a British neurosurgeon operating in the Ukraine.

But on Sunday, members of our own Harford County community will be in the spotlight.

The festival will be screening selected works by students from C. Milton Wright High School and the John Carroll School.

Former Celebrity Dance Winner Betty Ward Is Honorary Chair For 2nd Annual “Dancing For The Arts” Gala

Bel Air, MD (August 3, 2009) – Community organizer, Betty Ward graciously agreed to be the Honorary Chair of the 2nd Annual “Dancing for the Arts” Gala.

Mrs. Ward was a celebrity dancer at the event last year and won the “Top Fundraiser” and “People’s Choice” Awards. Mrs. Ward said that she has always loved to dance and her rendition of the foxtrot, complete with a spinning lift, won the hearts of the viewers who cast their votes in the “Peoples Choice” category after the competition was broadcast on Harford Cable for three months. Harford Commission On Disabilities Marks 19th Anniversary Of Americans With Disabilities Act

(Bel Air, MD) – - The Harford County Department of Community Services Commission on Disabilities will mark the 19th Anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) at its meeting on July 27th at 5:00 p.m. at the historic “Bel Air Colored High School.” The public is invited to attend. The ADA, which was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush on July 26, 1990, is a civil rights law that prohibits, under certain circumstances, discrimination based on disability.

The U.S. Census Bureau’s 2007 American Community Survey estimates that 12.3% of Harford County residents five years of age and older have a disability. The Survey further concludes that while 43.6% of individuals with disabilities 16 to 64 years of age are employed, 78.9% of their non-disabled counterparts are employed.

Harford Countians Urged to Take the Buy Local Challenge

(Bel Air, MD – July 14, 2009) – - The week of July 18-26 is “Buy Local Challenge Week” in Maryland, during which all Marylanders are encouraged to eat at least one local product every day of the week.

Begun two years ago by the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission, the Buy Local Challenge is now a statewide activity. Governor Martin O’Malley will host a cookout featuring food from local producers from around the state to kick-off the challenge at Government House on Thursday, July 16. For the second year in a row, Deer Creek Beef will be providing hamburgers for the event.

Vintage Base Ball And Pirates Coming To Havre de Grace This Summer

Vintage Base Ball Comes to Town

The Dauntless Base Ball Club of Havre de Grace, sponsored by the Susquehanna Museum at the Lock House, will be playing their first home match June 28 at the Steppingstone Museum. Match time is 12:00p.m.

Come out and enjoy Base Ball 1860’s style! Players wear vintage uniforms from the period, compete according to the rules of 1864 and even play without gloves. There will be early base ball history displays, historical re-enactors, kids games and more.
