From Valleybrook Country Club:
Valleybrook Country Club in Kingsville in Southern Harford County is teaming up with Cool Kids Campaign for its fourth Lazy River Duck Derby fundraiser on Friday, July 12, from 5 to 9 p.m.
The Lazy River Duck Derby, open to the public and providing an all-access pass to Valleybrook for the evening, takes place in the “Lazy River,” the only one of its kind in Harford County. A $10 rubber duck rental fee will be collected per person upon admission, and the duck will be entered in three races throughout the evening. Participants may also rent a duck online at lazyriverduckderby.com (need not be present to win).
The winner of each race receives a basket of prizes, valued between $250 and $400, from area businesses; basket values increase with each race.
A final fourth race, “The Quackness,” will be run at evening’s end and will be limited to 100 rubber ducks. The winner will receive an autographed Ray Rice football jersey. Those interested in participating in this race will rent a special rubber duck for $10 each that evening, and winners must be present to win.
A “family flock” is available for a $40 donation and includes five rubber duck rentals for the first three races and five admissions to the Lazy River Duck Derby, an ideal family package.
Duck rental fees sold at the gate allow each person access to Valleybrook’s five swimming pools (including the lazy river and two water slides) and 11 tennis courts, plus a moonbounce, glitter and press-on tattoos, games (including a duck launch), music and more.
All proceeds from the Lazy River Duck Derby will be donated to Cool Kids Campaign, a nonprofit based in Towson that works to improve the quality of life for kids with cancer and their families. Several raffles will be held throughout the evening, and 100 percent of food and beverage sales at The Grill will be donated to Cool Kids Campaign.
For those unable to attend but wanting to support the Lazy River Duck Derby and Cool Kids Campaign, contributions may be made by visiting lazyriverduckderby.com or coolkidscampaign.org.
In addition to Valleybrook Country Club, sponsors of the Duck Derby include Amrein Foods and Remembrances Mobile DJ.
Cool Kids Campaign was chosen as the recipient of the Lazy River Duck Derby’s proceeds because of the free programs they offer for kids with cancer.
“At Valleybrook Country Club, our goal is to bring families together in a fun, relaxing, wholesome environment. When I learned how Cool Kids Campaign helps children and their families battling cancer, it just seemed like a good fit,” said Tom King, general manager and owner of Valleybrook. “It is so important that the kids receiving treatment return to school at the appropriate grade level when they are ready to go back. Kids need to be kids. That’s why we chose to donate all the proceeds from the Lazy River Duck Derby to Cool Kids Campaign.”
Cool Kids Learning Center focuses on addressing the lasting academic and social effects of cancer and its treatments. Its aim is to keep kids current with their grade level in school, while providing them a chance to interact with their peers. Their merchandise slogan, Cancer Fears ME!, provides a strong, positive mindset for kids with cancer, their support groups and caregivers. Learn more at coolkidscampaign.org.
“Our goal at Cool Kids Campaign is to provide a positive impact on children who are fighting cancer. We want to provide a higher quality of life for not only the kids undergoing treatment but also to their families,” said Kristian Sekse, director of development of Cool Kids Campaign. “Parents and siblings feel the weight of cancer’s effects on the family in different ways, and we want them to know we are here to support them on the journey as well. Community events like the Lazy River Duck Derby are crucial to continuing our work. We are grateful to Valleybrook Country Club for enabling us to serve Maryland’s families.”
