A Perryman teen is charged with armed robbery and other offenses for allegedly robbing a man in the tunnel under the Aberdeen Amtrak train station Monday night but failing obtain any cash or valuables, police said.

Matthew L. Moorehead, 17, of the 300 block of Mayberry Drive in Perryman was arrested at approximately 10 p.m. Monday night by Aberdeen police. According to police, at approximately 2:20 p.m. that afternoon, Moorehead approached a 64-year-old Aberdeen man, produced a handgun, and demanded his wallet. The wallet was empty and Moorehead was unable to obtain anything from the man’s pockets before fleeing the area.

Lesson to be learned. Don’t carry a wallet in Aberdeen and stay out of the tunnel for reasons other than the horrible stench of urine and feces.

I took a relative to this station to catch a train and made the mistake of parking on the side that requires a stroll through this tunnel. I am not a small defenseless guy but I was genuinely scared for the safety of my wife and the older female relative we were escorting. The drug addicts had free run of this facility as there were no employees of any kind there on a Sunday afternoon. I would tell anyone to avoid using this station. If you have to pick up or drop off anyone there do not let them be alone and I highly recommend being armed.

We picked up some relatives there this summer; we made sure to stay out of the tunnel. By pure luck we ended up on the right side of the tracks, but if we hadn’t, we would have driven around to the other side. They should build an overpass between the two platforms; the bums and crooks don’t like to be out in the open.

There is an overpass at the train station. It is 50 yards or so east of the tunnel. I commute from Aberdeen regularly, but I’ve hardly ever seen anyone use the overpass, except for the occasional group of young people who will use it as a place to hang-out.

Sadly, you only need to do this once to realize you don’t want to use the tunnel at any time of day that’s not the rush hour trains. Know which side of the tracks you need to be on and get there by car. Best if you can do it not alone.

It’s not much different than many other places. I’m not afraid, nor should anyone be, so long as you are prudent. The Aberdeen stop is infinitely more convenient than going to Penn, so people should use it. Just be smart about it.

I agree with Noble, not only do the train stop there but it is the major stop for Harford transit system. Also for people that live on the east side of the station that have no other mean of transportation it is the most convenient path to get to work and home. Since it is the major commuting area in Aberdeen and the county there should be a police present at all times. We have County, Transportation, Amtrak and Aberdeen law enforcement all in the area, it should not be that hard to have a present there at all times.
And to the Aberdeen Police force “GOOD JOB”.

I can’t comment on the presumed accuracy or context of the “facts,” but I do acknowledge the
horrible disproportion of violent street crimes and the race of the perpetrators.

What I strongly object to is the use of the racist phrase, as if all Black persons by nature were inclined to such violent crime.

Maybe the Aberdeen Police Department should spend more time patrolling this area and the Walmart parking lot instead of running radar on Route 40 outside of their jurisdiction.

Yes, at a gun show where the seller didn’t follow procedure. Then stolen from a house with an unlocked door where it was not properly secured.

Gun violence is more complicated than a couple anecdotes.

There is NO “gun show” loophole in MD. IF you buy a handgun at a gun show located in MD, you have to wait a week and go to the store to pick it up. That is a fact.

I never said the show was in MD. The legal owner moved to MD not long ago.

See how easy it is to make assumptions when you are making it all up?

            I have no idea.

Your first comment implies something that you have no idea of either.

And my point is, either way, it really makes no difference on the larger issue of gun violence, because it’s just one incident. Neither by our assumptions, insinuations, or the actual facts of the case, will it make any credible commentary on the issue.

          • Brianc says

            November 22, 2013 at 11:13 am

Ok, But one incident can make a difference. The lone Trayvon incident certainly made a different. And be honest– If you HAD to place a bet–would you bet that the gun was legally purchased by that criminal or by the person that gave it to him? I’d say, even you would bet that the gun was in his hands illegally.
