Thanks To Concerned Parents and A Phone Call, Fixes and Changes Are On The Way At Patterson Mill Middle/High

June 11, 2008

As of a couple weekends ago, the damaged Verizon utility box alongside the parking lot at Patterson Mill Middle/High School still had not been fixed after more than 6 months, despite many requests from the community.  Exposed wires protruded from the split-open casing which jutted from the ground in an area frequented by the public and children of all ages. In response to recent inquiries, school staff reported that they were still waiting for the contractor and/or Verizon to address the problem.

Last Monday, The Dagger called the toll free number for Verizon’s repair service out of frustration and concern that this safety hazard would go another 6 months and possibly cause harm that should have been prevented. Verizon issued a call for service for the following day and in less than 24 hours, the entire box was removed. Yeah, I’m a dork. This is the coolest thing I have read today…

June 11, 2008

…and I immediately had to try it.

A rogue retro-gamer at Google has apparently programmed the famous Konami code — the mother of all cheats, the giver of life and ammunition to small, spoiled children with poor motor control— into Google Reader. Just make sure you’re at the Home Page, then enter Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A. The result? A horizontally shrugging Ninja will pop-up in the sidebar (although I’d argue that it really should be a Contra-esque Schwarzenegger for optimal effect) and your unread items will be reset to 30… the same number of lives, of course, you’d get in the NES era once the code had been successfully entered.

From Australia to Havre de Grace: LPGA, Lobster and Lifelong Friends

June 11, 2008

John and Mary Thomas of Havre de Grace consider themselves weekend golfers. Actually “we’re hackers,” John said joking, or maybe he was serious. Who’s not a hacker when comparing skills to the girls of the LPGA that compete at Bulle Rock?

The Thomas’ are lifers in Harford County - prior to their move to Havre de Grace they lived in Bel Air. John is the owner of Mane Connection in Bel Air. Hackers or not, they’ve found another reason to embrace the LPGA and her name is Lindsey Wright.

Wright is an Australian golfer in the LPGA and she has stayed with the Thomas’ since the LPGA rolled into town in 2005. Continue reading From Australia to Havre de Grace: LPGA, Lobster and Lifelong Friends

Hoops Pro Jai Lewis Comes Home From Israel To Put A Dagger Writer In Her Place

June 10, 2008

He hails from Aberdeen, stands 6′7″, weighs 275 pounds, led his college basketball team to the NCAA Final Four, was signed out of college to play football in the NFL and now is a professional basketball player holding his own in Israel.

She hails from Joppatowne, stands 5′5″, won’t tell me how much she weighs, admits to occassionally “horsing around” with her neices on the basketball court, formerly covered all manner of sports for the local media and is now holding her own as sports director of The Dagger.

He is Jai Lewis. She is Molly Lauryssens. And at 8 p.m. Wednesday at ESPN Zone in downtown Baltimore’s Inner Harbor the two forces will meet in a head-to-head shoot out when Jai returns to town. Continue reading Hoops Pro Jai Lewis Comes Home From Israel To Put A Dagger Writer In Her Place

Enough About the Women, What About the Latest In Men’s Golf Technology?

June 9, 2008

Meet the UroClub.

Imagine, giving the appearance of taking a practice swing, while both privately and confidentially, you are able to relieve yourself without any embarrassment! This can be accomplished easily while standing by the golf cart, as well. Have the confidence to drink whatever you wish during your game and not worry if you’ll make it to the clubhouse in time!

Crofton Teen Kaitlyn “Bug” Rohrback Annoys Competition As Two-Time Maryland Junior Girls Golf Champion

June 9, 2008

As a Crofton resident, 16-year old Kaitlyn Rohrback takes drivers education classes, only she has to travel to the Eastern Shore to do it. She has a hectic schedule. When she was younger, her father gave her the nickname of “Bug” because with other family names like Bud and Bub why not have a Bug? In her down-time, this Archbishop Spalding sophomore likes to chill with her friends- all of whom are athletes and play soccer, by relaxing and watching a movie. Her game is not soccer. But she shoots in the mid 70’s in golf. Unlike the pet name given to her, this Bug only intends on annoying her competitors.

This year Kaitlyn earned herself a sliver of history May 17 where the LPGA is concerned. For the second year in a row, this 2007 Maryland Junior Girls Champion, beat out a field of 11 high school females at Mountain Branch in Joppa to represent and play alongside LPGA members during the Pro-Am event at Bulle Rock. This Pro-Am spot was sponsored by The McDonald’s Family Restaurants of Greater Baltimore and WBFF/Fox 45. “…I haven’t heard one player who likes the course” - Longtime LPGA Caddy Offers Perspective On Bulle Rock and the LPGA Tour

June 6, 2008

With the McDonald’s LPGA Championship in town this week, all of the talk will be about this being Annika’s last tournament here and Lorena’s chances at winning her 3rd major in a row. But what you won’t hear about is their trusty sidekicks - their caddies.

Larry Smich has caddied on the LPGA tour since 1977. He has been on the bag for 3 wins, two with Donna White, one in 1982 and the second in 1985. The last was in 1999 with Mi-Hyun Kim.

Larry is also an avid blogger. At his website, Life On Tour, Larry pulls the curtain back, blogging about life on tour without pulling any punches - especially concerning the pro golfers’ apparent distaste for the tournament since it moved from Delaware to Havre de Grace.

We interviewed Larry before the start of the LPGA: Continue reading “…I haven’t heard one player who likes the course” - Longtime LPGA Caddy Offers Perspective On Bulle Rock and the LPGA Tour

Roam Through Nature/History At Redication of Eden Mill Nature Center and Historic Mill Museum

June 6, 2008

The land, the water and the wildlife have been there forever, at the confluence of Big Branch and Deer Creek in Pylesville, but the forward-thinking nature center designed to provide environmental education as well as preservation, interpretation and management of the ecological and cultural resources of the site is a relatively recent amenity.

Eden Mill Nature Center and Historic Mill Museum is celebrating 17 years in operation with an open house and rededication party Saturday, June 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Eden Mill was once an actual, functioning mill built in the early 1800s. It became a power plant with the rebuilding of its dam in 1917, but functioned as a mill up through the 1960s. Harford County then purchased the land for park property and in 1991 a group of local nature-lovers, led by Frank Marsden formed Eden Mill and began the laborious process of cutting trails through the forest, building a nature center and rehabilitating the historic mill for public display.
