From Friends of Art Helton:
ELECTION CLOSURE
Some post primary election analysis in response to my supporters and friends who could not believe that I lost my Senate Election Race. With over 400 voters polled, my polling from June 9th through June 19th showed me ahead by 45% to my opponent’s 25% with 30% undecided. What happened when they voted???
Well, they did not vote in the proportions tested with the poll. In my exit review I found 3 critical differences. The turnout was terrible with only about 23% in my district. In spite of many highly qualified African American candidates on the ballot, the African American turnout was awful. For example…The two precincts with the highest percentage of African American registered voters (1-01 and 1-06 in Edgewood) had less than a 10% turnout. Similar turnouts occurred in other neighborhoods.
Lastly, let me give you some names of victors in the Democratic Primary: Mary-Dulany James, Mary Ann Lisanti, Marla Posey-Moss, Cassandra Beverley, Gina Kasimir, Barbara Kreamer, Laura Runyeon, Alysson Krchnavy, Nancy Reynolds, and Rachel Gauthier. What do all of these candidates have in common? They are all women and a quality group when viewed collectively. In the Democratic Primary, not one woman lost unless challenged by another woman.
Here is the fatal result for my candidacy and other men…The percentage of women voting in the Democratic Primary was 63.4%. You can view the results and draw your own conclusions. Again, my most heartfelt THANK YOU to those that believed in me and my populace message and promise to fairly represent all of our citizens regardless of their station in life.
ugh says
Art- Just go away, you are creepy, that is the reason you lost, blaming women wont help you in your next election, assuming you have not learned that No means No.
Sara says
Art. Go away. You are a fraud. Your men friends are frauds. We came out to vote against you. Liar liar liar. Glad I dont have to see your tailers parked all over the place.
Hank says
Is Helton really blaming women and white people for his losing the primary? ROFL
Gene pool cleaner says
So what you are really trying to say is that Democrat Women voters are sexist towards men and Blacks are apathetic. This is just classic. I love liberals.
You don’t think your loss has anything to do with the fact you campaign message basically consisted of bringing a pair of kneepads for when you meet with Mike Miller and the next Liberal Governor. This message intermixed with dirty attacks on your opponent and trying to explain to people where you live would not have anything to do with your loss would it?
Way to go you tool
Mr. Moderate says
To GPC: As a Moderate, I can tell you Helton is no Liberal. In fact, he’s no Conservative. He’s Art Helton, slimy opportunist of no health-felt convictions.. Please do not slander my good Liberal friends by associating Helton with their sincere beliefs.
Gene pool cleaner says
Out of curiosity you said the women turnout was 63.4%. Who was this .4%? Was this a transgendered person?
Cdev says
While I think Helton is slimy too are you that ignorant about percentages?
Gene pool cleaner says
Glad to see that little bit of sarcasm went over your head you stupid twat
Colin says
You lost because you lied about where you live! But, you go ahead and blame women, I am sure that will certainly help next time.
Copenhaver says
Now don’t go ahead and take your frustrations about women voters out on Ann. We all know you’re not above it. Good riddance.
Concerned Teacher says
Mr. Helton:
You lost because you are a known and proven liar. You lost because you acquired a place of residence in a district you thought was winnable and underestimated the local populace’s ability to see through your charade. You lost because your entire campaign was based on running against Ms. James rather than your own track record, because your own track record is not electable. When I think of Art Helton, I don’t think reputable business owner. Instead, I think “real estate developer” and “wannabe politician desperate for power”. I remember the letter you sent out to people affected by the Moores Mill Road project using the title “Senator” even though you are not one, making it seem as if you could offer them real, substantive assistance when you could not. Every election cycle, we are bombarded by campaign signs, and the thought of “here goes Art Helton running for another office” goes through my head. Please don’t run any more. The collective non-elections should be enough to convince you that your talents and/or ideas are no longer wanted.
Chris says
This woman went to the poll to specifically vote AGAINST you Mr Hilton!! Called in late to work and all. You lost because we don’t like you, believe you, or trust you. You are a proven slum lord, fake, and liar. Now will you and your puppet Mr Johnson take the hint and leave already?
Chris says
Im wondering …..if “Ann had the plan” would you have won?
Justin A. Glimmer says
Wow! Seeing all these “Helton Haters” makes me happy AND proud the the vast majority of primary voters of District 34 (no matter their gender, race or creed) had enough sense AND information to come out against this carpet-bagging, arrogant, lying asshole. Hey Art, why don’t you remove ALL of your remaining signs from all around the greater Bel Air area. They were (for the most part) placed in illegal locations anyway, and they are still creating visual pollution for those of us that drive along Rte 924, 543, Wheel Road, Laurel Bush Road, Hookers Mill Road, Etc.Please clean up your mess and leave us in peace! RIP Art Helton!
MUFFMOUTHSKI says
Art, maybe you can buy some property down in Tacoma Park and make a play for the illegal alien votes in PG County.
Just get the &%@! out of Harford County as no one wants you here, not democrat nor republican.
Potato peeler says
Abingdon Road/Federal lane has a campaign sign sitting in the weeds. Please “Get things done” and remove your trash.
Real Loyal Harford Dem says
Hey Art….it appears as though you and Steve Johnson wasted your time and efforts attending all of those various primarily African American churches up and down the Rte 40 corridor. You guys thought that those folks could be duped into ‘believing’ in you by the mere fact that you made one “pilgrmage” to their worship service. Well….you hypocritical guys were wrong! Those folks were much smarter than you gave them credit to be, Churches are for worship, NOT politics (or evil politician wanna-be’s). You lost again Art (and Steve, for the first, and hopefully only time), now stay away, but support the victors!
Arturro Nasney says
As can be seen from the results and comments here, not many folks want anything to do with Art. But, the premise of the article is that Art was counting on the vote of women and blacks. More importantly, Art figures that women voted for women and blacks didn’t come out for him because he isn’t black. Therein lies the huge gap between dems and republicans. We don’t vote for color, gender, sexual orientation. We vote for philosophy and record.
Real Loyal Harford Dem says
Not true Arturro. Do NOT equate Art Helton’s comments as a standard for normal Democrats! If he was the standard bearer, then he’d probably be elected to something by now. Instead, he’s a washed-up has-been that just doesn’t know when to quit. How sad. On the bright side, check the financials, as Art has pumped hundreds of thousands of his own money into the campaign (and by default, the economy!), and that’s a good thing, isn’t it my Repbulican friend! 🙂
By the way….the first three letters of your name are “Art”! Now THAT’S a bit of irony, isn’t it “Mr. Nasney”? 🙂
Loyal Harford Dem says
Sorry, bud. I’m the real “Loyal Harford Dem” and I’ll stand up.
I would definitely say that James’ incumbency in Annapolis plus the low voter turnout was why Helton did not win his race. Remember Helton beat Nancy Jacobs (!) in Harford County totals and only lost because Jacobs outperformed him in Cecil County.
This whole “Nobody likes Art Helton” theory doesn’t hold water, especially when you’re basing it on the fact that less than a quarter of the county even bothered to come out and vote in Maryland’s first primary held in June.
LOL says
Not really into excuses. The guy lost against Nancy Jacobs, regardless, just the same as he lost in the Primaries by several thousand votes this time around.
Yeah, low primary voter turn out, but the people that voted against him did so in greater numbers.
And, so?
Is your logic to infer that he would have won if more people came out to vote? That makes no sense, and there is no basis of comparison because the people who would have voted for him, didn’t vote, in your mind. LOL
noble says
I think probably the simplest explanation, which is typically right, is that his polling methodology sucked.
none says
The Fatal Result was caused by your name. Ann would have beat Craig a few years ago if she ran using her maiden name.
Is this 1950 or 2014?? says
Art, I cannot believe I just read your statement and it is 2014! It sounds like it is from the 50’s – 60’s. You sound like a chauvinist and a racist. It is 2014 and you just committed professional suicide. You will never get elected to anything with the statements you have made.
somebody says
talk about a sore loser. Rather than making generalizations about people’s race and gender take a look at yourself. Your business practices have not made many fans; you have a reputation mostly in the district on which you ran. Your place of residence was brought into question. You have not held office in a long time, while your opponent has, and it is possible that the voters, regardless of race or gender was relatively happy with her record. I know women who supported you, and men, myself included who support your opponent. To say that women voted along gender lines is a horrible thing to say about the citizens you wanted to represent. Your crying in a public forum like this shows us that the right choice was made.
Bill says
Just a general statement to all the politicians out there, please go out, and take down your campaign signs that are littering the roads, the election is over. Whoever put them up, should take them down.
noble says
Couldn’t agree more, but remember that for some of them, the election is not over. I don’t expect any of the primary winners plan to take down any signs.
Sheeple says
Just another example of the republican’s war on women.
Chris says
Huh? I don’t get that comment.
Brian Andrews says
As the Bible say, whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. Once in awhile, the voters of Harford County can make a wise decision. In this case, they were very wise in not electing a bully, has been, and nasty politician who is only interested in bettering Art Helton. Art is the George P. Mahoney of Harford County. But he’ll probably be back next election claiming that he gets things done.
LOL says
Chris says
Did anyone else catch the commercials that were running before the election where Art tried to use this same thing against Jacobs? Art has been using his rental properties and businesses as proof of residence for years.
