The Reginald F. Lewis Museum, in partnership with the Maryland State Education Association (MSEA), recently announced the winners of its Second Annual Maryland Statewide High School Juried Art Show whose artwork will be showcased at the museum from January 17th to February 28th to commemorate the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. The exhibition will feature works by young artists from several regions across the state which include Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Harford, and Prince George’s counties.
Out of 60 entries submitted for this competition, 18 finalists’ pieces were selected to be featured in the show. Joppatowne, MD _ Detectives working a serial robbery case nabbed the assailant seconds after he struck a pharmacy on the Pulaski Highway corridor in Harford County Thursday night.
Anthony Pierre Willis, 45, of the 4000 block of Hawksbury Road, Pikesville, Maryland, was taken into custody as he left the Rite Aid Pharmacy in the 300 block of Pulaski Highway, near Joppatowne. He was charged with armed robbery, robbery, assault, theft and resisting arrest in connection with Thursday’s heist. Charges are pending in connection with three other robberies in Harford County.
Maryland State Police and Harford County Sheriff’s Office detectives joined forces to stop the robber after he targeted pharmacies and an eatery in the Edgewood area starting nine days earlier. Harford County Public Schools earned a graduation rate of 86.95 for the Class of 2009, according to data released by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) during its Board meeting on Monday, September 21. Harford exceeded the Annual Measurable Objective, or AMO, of 85.5 for 2009 graduation rate, achieving Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) as a system in that academic area.
To meet AYP in Maryland, all students within a school, as well as eight student subgroups within that school (African American, Asian, White, and Hispanic students, those students receiving free and reduced price meals, students with limited English proficiency, and students receiving special education services) must reach the AMO in both reading and math, and on other criteria. Graduation rate is the “other” academic measure for AYP for high schools.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.) announced today that the Harford County Public Schools’ Department of Curriculum Instruction and Magnet Programs has been awarded a $143,000 Fund for the Improvement of Education (FIE) grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
The Harford County Public School district offers a specialized homeland security and emergency preparedness program (HSEP) at Joppatowne High School. The program prepares students to meet the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) impacted workforce needs in the county by training future workers in the science and technology fields. BRAC will bring between 45,000 to 60,000 new jobs to Maryland, leading to significant career opportunities in science and technology.

Ocean City, MD – A Maryland angler, Chris Toner of Joppa, MD, has set a new Atlantic Division state record with a 72 pound cobia. The catch eclipsed the previous record of 67 pounds, 12 ounces set in 2007 by Mike Horsey.

Valerie Lianne Carlton, 40, of Joppa, Maryland, was indicted by the Grand Jury for Harford County on June 2, 2009 on 28 counts ranging from the Sexual Child Abuse of two young girls, agres five and six, to Attempted Child Kidnapping and Extortion. These offenses began on or about January 2008 and continued through April 2009. Carlton has been a resident of Joppa for the past fifteen years.

(Joppatowne, MD) – - Congressman C. A. “Dutch” Ruppersberger and Harford County Executive David R. Craig, have announced additional funding of $143,000 for Joppatowne High School’s Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Program. The money, provided from the federal government, will help keep the program on the cutting edge and allow it to expand.
The program currently has 120 students and will add an additional 65 new students for the 2009 – 2010 school year. The curriculum prepares students for careers in the homeland security sciences, law enforcement, criminal justice and information technology. The Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Program at Joppatowne High School is now a pilot program. The curriculum is expected to be implemented at Dundalk High School in Baltimore County and Fort Meade High School in Anne Arundel County next year.

(Joppa, MD – May 8, 2009) – Harford County Sheriff’s deputies have arrested Artis Dwayne Bartholow, 42, of Warren Road, Essex, MD in connection with an armed bank robbery which occurred this morning.
At 9:58 a.m. deputies responded to the Harford Bank in the 500 block of Riviera Drive, Joppa, MD in reference to a report of a robbery. The investigation revealed that a white male wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, dark sunglasses, and a hospital mask entered the bank displaying a small black handgun and demanded money from the tellers. During the robbery one shot was fired toward the tellers striking a computer system on a nearby desk.

(Joppatowne, MD – April 30, 2009) – Harford County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the homicide of a 59 year old man in the 600 block of Harborside Drive, Joppatowne, MD which occurred mid-afternoon on Wednesday April 29, 2009.
At approximately 3:25 p.m. deputies responded to a 911 call in the 600 block of Harborside Drive Joppatowne, MD in reference to a shooting. Deputies determined Charles W. Shourds was shot multiple times in the upper torso and died at the scene.
The female suspect, Rebecca Jeanette Kinser, 43, identified herself to deputies and was immediately taken into custody. Kinser told deputies that she was familiar with Shourds and that he was visiting from Kentucky. During his stay Kinser advised that Shourds had beaten and raped her several times with the last incident occurring just before the shooting. At approximately 3:25 p.m. deputies responded to a 911 call in the 600 block of Harborside Drive Joppa, MD in reference to a shooting. Deputies determined the unidentified male was shot multiple times in the upper torso and died at the scene. The female suspect identified herself to deputies and was immediately taken into custody.
At this time deputies believe there was an altercation inside the apartment just prior to the shooting. The female suspect was treated at the scene for non-life threatening injuries and transported to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center by Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Department.
