Former NFL wide receiver Qadry Ismail, who played three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and was a member of their Super Bowl XXXV championship team, has been hired as the new men’s track coach at Patterson Mill High School in Bel Air.
Ismail, 39, retired from the NFL following the 2002 season, which he played with the Indianapolis Colts. Ismail has lived in Harford County for several years.
Ismail has been working with the team since their season began March 1, according to Jason Bellamy, Patterson Mill’s athletic director. Bellamy said Ismail has been fully involved with the team and their practices so far.
“That’s what’s been great about him,” said Bellamy, who is in his first year as Patterson Mill’s AD. “He’s out there every day, he’s all about working with the kids.
Bellamy said the school approached Ismail to serve as coach.
“I don’t remember how exactly it came about, but we were ...Continue Reading
The Harford County Sheriff’s Office has filed charges against a 16-year-old boy who allegedly failed to stop the SUV he was driving and hit a 12-year-old student in the parking lot of Patterson Mill Middle/High School in Bel Air on Friday.
The female middle school student was treated and transported to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center for a broken leg, but questions remain regarding the boy and the vehicle he was driving during the accident.
A middle school student was hit by a vehicle at Patterson Mill after high school let out, while the middle school was still in session. She was reportedly lifted on a body board and transported to the hospital.
Students at the school have reported that the vehicle was apparently driven by a 15-year-old, unlicensed high school student, and that it is owned by a custodian at the school.
The middle school student was in gym class at the time of the accident.
A somewhat cryptic Alert Now call went out to parents Friday night from Principal Wayne Thibeault who said:
“This afternoon at approximately 2:35PM a seventh grade student was struck by a motor vehicle on school property. The student was transported to Upper Chesapeake Medial Center in stable condition. The entire matter is being investigated by the Harford County Sheriff’s Department. The school will continue to investigate the situation and appropriate disciplinary ...Continue Reading

The high school gym at Patterson Mill Middle High School has reopened for all activities, but defects in the floor like the one that splintered and sent a student to the hospital are still being discovered. Trouble spots have also been identified for the first time in the middle school gym, bringing the total number found on the new floors to 13.
School custodians found at least one of the newly identified spots while sweeping the gym floor and now perform inspections when they sweep the floors each day.
The new gym floor at Patterson Mill Middle High School splintered a week ago Thursday and injured a basketball player who had to be taken to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center. The student had a shard, estimated at 5 – 6”, surgically removed, according to accounts from parents at the school. The student has since been released from the hospital.
The problem area on the gym floor was taped off and a girls’ basketball game was played on the surface later the same day.
Sometimes you CAN judge a book by its cover, or at least a building. Parents at the new Patterson Mill Middle High School in Bel Air have plenty of concerns about the walkways, fields and facilities on school grounds. Meetings with school officials are ongoing. But now that the building has been open for a year, it turns out there are problems on the inside too.
The school might have some of the latest technology, but something as simple as lockers are scarce. Patterson Mill was planned to handle 1,600 students and 1,672 lockers were installed.
A new class is being offered to, or should I say imposed on, 9th grade students in Harford County Public Schools. Living in a Contemporary World (LICW) is meant to ease the transition from middle to high school as well as prepare students for adult life. One would think that the latter would be a more appropriate topic for a class taken senior year as 12th graders are closer to entering the adult world. One would be right. However, the two subjects have been smashed together to create one utterly useless class.
As of a couple weekends ago, the damaged Verizon utility box alongside the parking lot at Patterson Mill Middle/High School still had not been fixed after more than 6 months, despite many requests from the community. Exposed wires protruded from the split-open casing which jutted from the ground in an area frequented by the public and children of all ages. In response to recent inquiries, school staff reported that they were still waiting for the contractor and/or Verizon to address the problem.
Last Monday, The Dagger called the toll free number for Verizon’s repair service out of frustration and concern that this safety hazard would go another 6 months and possibly cause harm that should have been prevented. Verizon issued a call for service for the following day and in less than 24 hours, the entire box was removed.
