BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford women’s tennis team dropped just one match as it felled Rockville, 8-1, for the second time this season on Monday afternoon at Harford CC.
After their first dual match loss of the season against St. Mary’s last Friday, the Fighting Owls (7-0, 5-0 MDJUCO) No. 1 doubles team of freshman Ashley Sherinsky (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and sophomore Katrina Tiedeman (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) made a bold statement with a love set, 8-0 win over Shadaia Otto and Jennifer Gregory.
The No. 2 team of freshmen Kelsey Strine (Abingdon, Md./Edgewood) and Agnes Burke (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace), teaming together for the first time, defeated Nadine Montforte and Aleunia Nakamura, 8-2, while in the No. 3 position sophomore Julie Strong (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) teamed with freshman Cierra Palmer (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace), who made her first start of the season, and downed Calvine Tiengwe and Makale Nyabhele, 9-7.
Head coach George Budelis named Strong the MVP of the match after leading the No. 3 doubles team to victory. A veteran doubles player, Strong was teamed with Palmer, who saw her first action of the season and Strong’s wealth of experience helped Harford to another victory.
The No. 1 singles match saw the biggest upset of the afternoon as Sherinsky fell to Otto, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 to give the Knights their only win of the match.
The No. 1 match was also the only to go to three sets as Tiedeman defeated Montforte, 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 2 spot, freshman Courtney Brewer (Street, Md./North Harford) downed Gregory, 7-6, 6-4 in the No. 3 position, Strine beat Nakamura, 6-0, 6-3 in No. 4 singles, freshman Kate Tiburzi (Fallston, Md./Fallston) handed Nyabhele a 6-2, 6-2 decision and Burke triumphed over Tiengwe, 6-4, 6-2.
The Fighting Owls return to competition on Sunday, Oct. 12 when they host Brookdale in a 10:00 a.m. match.
