T-Sizzle Is NOT A Bounty Hunter

October 25, 2008

In case anyone watched ESPN this morning and saw commentators speaking about this, Suggs is addressing the issue and hoping to put it to bed.

From the Baltimore Ravens: Oct. 24

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs asked the team to issue this statement today:

“I’ve got to set the record straight about what I said about so-called bounties. I tried to explain this on Wednesday, but it keeps coming back up.

“We, the players, don’t pay each other to take another player out of the game. And you know coaches don’t do that. As I said before, we prepare to stop the other team’s best players every week. Those are the players who can beat you with big plays. For example, we’ve focused all this week on stopping the Raiders’ running backs. We’ve focused on them in practice and in meetings. They are marked men by our defense – we have to know where they are on every play, and we can’t let them get rolling on Sunday.

“When I did the radio show in Atlanta, that’s what I meant and I thought that’s what I said. I did repeat the word bounty early in the interview after the guy asking me the question used the word. That was a mistake. I misspoke, and I’m sorry for that.

“I hope that clears this up.”

“Legalized Government Harassment?” Property Maintenance Could Become Costly And Mandatory In Aberdeen

October 25, 2008

Have you heard the one about how the Aberdeen City Council is going to impose a citywide Homeowner’s Association and force all the municipality’s residents to clean up their properties lest they be hauled off to court and fined into compliance?

While that description might be a slight exaggeration (perpetuated, perhaps, by a group of vocal opponents), the crux of the idea could soon become reality. Proposed Property Maintenance Ordinance 08-9 would extend Aberdeen’s “Livability Code” from just rental properties onto all structures and properties in the city and force owners to clean up their acts or pay the price. Will And All Us Dogs

October 24, 2008

With squatters on the East and squatters on the West, old Pilgrims north in Leeswood seem like old natives in this vastly different and rapidly changing world here at Rustica. The pup, Frisco, is doing fine, a little hardheaded, but a good dog. The feathery bantams, peafowl and Canada’s offer no playmates for this puppy that’s been here only six months. HCC Women’s Soccer Drops Final Game In Chiller

October 24, 2008

From HCC Sports Desk
10/23/08

BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford women’s soccer team, playing in its last game of the regular season, fell 3-0 to Mercer on Thursday night at a frigid Harford Stadium.

The Fighting Owls (9-6-0) managed just eight shots, and just two in the first half, compared to the Vikings’ (15-3-1) 22 total shots, with Mercer dominating the play of the game on Harford’s day to honor its two-year sophomore players.

The Vikings broke the scoreless tie with less than five minutes remaining in the first half, at the 40:21 mark, as sophomore goalie Jessica Stumpf (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) got a hand on Kasey Kenny’s shot, but couldn’t control it completely, letting Tina DeAngelis get a crack at the ball and knock it into the back of the net to give Mercer a 1-0 lead.

After the half, Mercer wasted no time, notching its second goal at the 51:43 mark as Erica Juricic blasted one from about 25 yards out on a breakaway down the left side, and her ball, just out of Stumpf’s reach, found the back of the net in the upper left corner.

The Vikings’ final goal of the evening came in much the same as their first, this time Jesse Lee Remus shot from about 15 yards out on the left side and a diving Stumpf batted the ball away only to have Carolyn Walters put the rebound into the goal to give Mercer the 3-0 win.

Stumpf totaled 10 saves on the evening, while her counterpart, Heidi Summers, tallied four and the Vikings held a 5-4 advantage on corner kicks.

The Fighting Owls will compete in the Region XX Tournament next week, where they will battle CCBC-Essex and Anne Arundel for the right to play in the district championship game. Seedings are yet to be determined, but the No. 1 team will advance straight to the Region XX Championship on Saturday Nov. 1 at Anne Arundel, while the No. 2 and No. 3 teams will meet in a semifinal on Thursday, Oct. 30 at Anne Arundel.

Ravens’ J.O. To Be Honored With Another Ring (Of Sorts)

October 23, 2008

From the Baltimore Ravens:

Jonathan Ogden, the first draft choice in Baltimore Ravens history and an 11-time Pro Bowler, will be inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor at M&T Bank Stadium on Oct. 26. The Ring of Honor is presented by Smyth Jewelers, who will give Ogden a spectacular crystal vase and a commemorative coin to honor the occasion. The actual induction will take place at halftime of the Ravens/Raiders game.

Ogden completed his 12-season career with the Ravens following the 2007 campaign. He has more starts, 176, than any other Raven, and is second to Matt Stover in games played, 196 to 177.

Jon’s 11 Pro Bowls are tied as the fourth most in NFL history, and only three offensive linemen – Bruce Matthews with 14 and Randall McDaniel and Will Shields with 12 each – have been selected more than the Baltimore standout.

Ogden, who was born in Washington, D.C., on July 31, 1974, was the fourth player selected in the NFL Draft in 1996, the Ravens’ first year. After starting at left guard as a rookie, Ogden moved to the left tackle spot in 1997 and remained a Ravens’ fixture at that position for the rest of his career.

Ogden is the fifth Raven to be inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor, which is located on the façade at the front of M&T Bank Stadium’s upper deck. The other Ravens, and the year they were inducted, are: RB Earnest Byner (2001), owner Art Modell (2003), DE Michael McCrary (2004) and LB Peter Boulware (2006). The eight Hall of Fame members of the Baltimore Colts are also in the Ravens’ Ring of Honor.

Harford County Funds FluMist Vaccinations For Elementary School Students

October 22, 2008

(Bel Air, MD – October 21, 2008) - - Harford County Executive David R. Craig, joined by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jacqueline C. Haas and the Acting Health Officer for the Harford County Health Department Susan Kelly, today kicked-off the start of the FluMist vaccination program in Harford County Public Schools. The kick-off of the FluMist vaccination was held at Churchville Elementary School.

“In keeping with our commitment to enhance quality of living and support for public education, we are pleased to provided $150,000 to the Harford County Health Department to support the FluMist Program for the Harford County Public Schools,” County Executive David R. Craig stated. “Helping to keep our children healthy during the cold and flu season is essential for their well being and their education,” the county executive remarked.

The funding, $100,000 in general funds and an additional $50,000 grant from Harford County, will support the Harford County Health Department in providing vaccine for the elementary student population of Harford County Public Schools.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the best way to prevent getting the flu is by getting a flu vaccination each year. On average, 5% to 20% of the U. S. population gets the flu each year. Additionally, more than 200,000 people are hospitalized and more than 36,000 die each year as a result of complications from the flu.

Common symptoms of the flu include fever, sore throat, aches and pains, runny or stuffy nose, dizziness, tiredness, and coughing. Complications from the flu can include bacterial pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections, dehydration, and worsen chronic health conditions such as congestive heart failure, asthma or diabetes.

Recently, the Harford County Public Schools and the Harford County Health Department were recognized by the Maryland State School Health Council for the development and implementation of the Maryland Elementary School Influenza Project for Harford County. The award recognized the efforts of the Harford County Health Department and HCPS to provide FluMist vaccines to every elementary school student in Harford County. Funding for the program was provided by Harford County Government.

Last year, 8,944 students were vaccinated against influenza in 48 hours. This effort was repeated six weeks later for 4,000 students who required a second dose.

The FluMist vaccination process for elementary public school children in Harford County begins on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 and will conclude in early December with a second dose for students that require it. More than a dozen Harford County Health Department nurses will administer the FluMist vaccination, assisted by school nurses.

Each dose of the FluMist vaccination costs $17.75.
