EDGEWOOD: Better with EVERYONE’S Help!
A Thriving, Diverse and Compassionate Community that Welcomes All Citizens!
February 2009 Edition
What’s Been Happening?
Many gracious thanks to the volunteers who in January helped clear the area behind the Edgewood Post Office of the litter and debris that has been such an eyesore! The area had become a dangerous situation involving drug trafficking and loitering, lighting of can fires, and a general dumping ground of useless items. Our thanks to Kecia Bell-Smith for coordinating this Second Saturday Serve Clean-up of Edgewood.
Jim Havlin and Stacy St. John, Co-owners of Clarence’s Taste of New Orleans restaurant near the MARC train station had an interesting story to tell regarding the effect that the “Obama Slow Down Through Edgewood” had on their establishment in Edgewood. As posted on the DaggerPress website of 24 Jan 2009, they talk about all of the preparations that took place as dozens of Secret Service, Inauguration and security personnel checked out the Edgewood Station and surrounding properties including Clarence’s. The Secret Service briefed the restaurant owners Clarence Hill, Stacy St. John and Jim Havlin to be prepared for a large crowd that turned out to be almost 1300 folks. Clarence’s served as the headquarters for celebrities and crews from NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, regional newspapers, the AP and even a Japanese television crew. Sandwiches, chili, gumbo, hot chocolate and coffee were served inside Clarence’s to the crews that had been braving cold temperatures of the day. Clarence’s served hot chocolate and coffee, shrimp, and homemade Louisiana gumbo for very reasonable prices. You can read about the details of the preparations and security at http://www.daggerpress.com/2009/01/24/obama-slow-down-through-edgewood-provides-local-stimulus-package/#more-2893. Incidentally, the Dagger Press website covers happenings in Harford County and has printed our January newsletter, so please subscribe and check then out at www.daggerpress.com.
The 2009 Edgewood/Joppatowne Independence Day Celebration Planning committee began its work on Jan 29 at the office of Paul Diggs All State Insurance Office. There are many ways to assist to ensure that this yearly function is a successful celebration so think about becoming involved. More information will be forthcoming as plans progress.
Service – Volunteer Opportunities
Second Saturday Serve is a program initiated by Mt. Christian Church that undertakes neighborhood beautification projects. This important volunteer effort has cleaned up tons of trash and debris in various neighborhoods! The Grime Squad Clean-Up campaign takes place every second Saturday of the month. Your help is requested. This month clean-up is an area of the Starlite Plaza. Join the Serve-Fest Grime Abatement Campaign, call Kecia Bell-Smith, 443-371-8267-or 443-712-3785-(cell).
The Edgewood Community Council volunteers are working to make our community a better place to live. Many hands are needed and we hope you will become involved and support our activities. There are many committees and subcommittees that can use your help. Will you volunteer your talents? Please contact Jansen Robinson: Chairman, Edgewood Community Council. 410-676-1589 (h),
410-258-4552 (cell) or via email: jmrobinson4@hotmail.com.
Volunteers/ Edgewood Youth Fair Planning Session
This is an opportunity to showcase what Edgewood has to offer to our youth. We are trying to put together a Youth Fair where school age kids can register for football, cheerleading, karate, and/or scouts; sign-up to volunteer at homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and with civic organizations that impact their community; or for teenagers to have the opportunity to fill out applications for jobs. The idea is to have numerous organizations and businesses set up booths on a Super Saturday Sign-Up day when our kids can go around and register for all of the activities they are interested in. One goal is to make sure these children have something to do before summer arrives. Volunteers are needed to help plan this out as well as contact groups who may be willing to participate. If you can help, please contact Karla Simon
kleverwerks@yahoo.com
Anna’s House – Assistance for Homeless Women and Children
Anna’s House is a transitional and permanent housing program for homeless women and children. Volunteers and donations are needed to help the families on a journey to independence. To learn more about Anna’s House please contact Patsy Jackson at (410) 803-2130 or email pjackson@cc-md.org.
Sharing Table
The Sharing Table is a non-profit coalition of churches dedicated to reaching out to fellow citizens in need. For the past 17 years, the Sharing Table has provided one hot meal and bags of groceries to an average of 83 persons per week. The Sharing Table is held at the Prince of Peace Roman Catholic Church, Willoughby Beach Road on Saturdays. Unfortunately, the United Way, without explanation, denied the 2008 Federal Emergency Food Surplus Program grant request of $5,500 that had been received every year since 1993. A serious short fall in funding resources is anticipated while service needs are on the increase. Donations are appreciated. Anyone willing to volunteer to help in fundraising or serve as a driver or purchaser/inventory manager is urged to contact Michael Perrone, Jr. at 410-652-9572 or email to:sharingtableinfo@gmail.com.

County Council Representative
Dion Guthrie’s Report
Cordish Company
All of you know that the Cordish Company, headed by Mr. David Cordish, owns both the Joppatowne Shopping Center and the Edgewood Shopping Center. To date our efforts to get him to refurbish those centers so that it would be attractive enough for new businesses to rent the facilities and keep existing businesses in those facilities, has fallen on deaf ears. Numerous meetings with their “powers to be” have literally gotten us nowhere; however, I noticed in a recent article in “The Daily Record Business Writer” on January 28th, Mr. Cordish is involved in the “slots” issue in the State of Maryland and is even interested in bidding on one of the five slated sites in the State of Maryland. Cordish, who has multi-million dollar investments literally all over the world, continues to turn his back on Edgewood and Joppatowne and will be bidding on a slots facility in Anne Arundel County and will be competing with the Maryland Jockey Club at Laurel Park Race Track. He will need to put $3 million upfront for the license and commit to another $25 million in capital investments for every 500 machines put in place. That investment could be as high as $185 million.
Comprehensive Rezoning
As you know, we have recently completed the re-write of the Zoning Code which had not been re-written for over 20 years. We now will move to the comprehensive rezoning which is the rezoning of property as requested by the owners of property in Harford County. You can go online on the Harford County website and look at the properties that have been request to be rezoned. There are 327 properties that have been requested for rezoning with approximately 28 in District A. Property owners who sought out zoning change to their property were required to file a request by December 15, 2008 and a fee of $800 was assessed for each application.
The timeline for this process will begin with the introduction on June 16th and the first work sessions on July 14th, with the final passage of the legislation being required on August 11th at the County Council meeting at 7:30 p.m.
Inauguration Day
It certainly was an honor and a privilege to attend both the Maryland State Inaugural Ball and the inauguration ceremony of our new President. Though both events were extremely crowded, I was glad to be there. The inauguration, of which I attended with my grandson and Mildred Samy and her granddaughter, the four of us spent the day together “walking” throughout Washington, D.C. trying to get to our assigned viewing point. We had Mildred and her granddaughter stay overnight at my house, for the night before, so we all could get up at 2:00 a.m. to catch the bus at 3:45 a.m. Arriving in Washington at 6:00 a.m. our journey began. We walked and we walked and we walked some more. God bless Mildred Samy’s 9 year old granddaughter because she hung in there with us through the entire trip. Every street we took, every place we went, ran into nothing but detours and had to go in another direction. Trying to make a long story short, we finally arrived at our gate after walking about 5 hours and 18 miles only to find our gate was locked at about 11:15 a.m. and we could not get in. So we didn’t get to see our new President being sworn in nor did we have an opportunity to hear any of it except the cannon that went off 21 times. We realized it was over and, at 12:30 p.m., we started back to Baltimore to arrive home at 9:30 p.m. It was certainly a trip that my grandson, Mildred Samy, her granddaughter and I will never forget.
Our Seasoned Citizens
I think we need to find some type of legislation to protect our “seasoned” citizens. They cannot afford these constant increases in real estate taxes with the fact that property values are dropping. Those two things don’t make any sense.
I recently received a letter from a couple who are 84 and 87 years old respectively. They live in our County and during their working years, worked 70 and 80 hours a week for 50 years in order to buy their home site, build their house, and pay it off. They are on fixed incomes and cannot afford these steady increases, particularly since their retirement funds, have dropped because of the economy, over 50%. I am looking at drafting legislation to try to put a fixed amount on the real estate taxes for people over a certain age until they sell their home. We cannot and will not tax our seasoned citizens out of their homes.

LEAP: Science is Fun!
LEAP (Learn, Explore, and Play) is a dynamic science program based at the Edgewood Branch Library at 629 Edgewood Road. LEAP consists of two main parts: programs and take-home kits, designed to enable children and youth in grades 3-8 to explore different aspects of science and science careers.
Each month the library hosts LEAP programs, usually on the 2nd Wednesday and 4th Saturday of the month. Programs feature hands-on science experiments, often led by scientists and engineers from local industries. We’ve examined bacteria with a microbiologist, tested bridges with an engineer, and looked into our ears with a pediatrician. We’ve typed blood, solved mysteries, and performed chemistry experiments—all while having a fun time! Programs are free but space is limited, so be sure to call and register your attendance.
Every Thursday evening between 6 – 8 p.m., Jeannine Finton, the LEAP Coordinator, brings out some informal science to share for Scope Out Science. This is a good time to drop into the library with your science questions, to explore the LEAP kits, or just have fun!
The LEAP science kits available at the library allow you to bring hands-on science into your home. You can actually check out a microscope or electronics kit for a week. These kits are free for use—all it takes is a library card. Don’t have a card? Well, of course you should get one, but you can also explore the kits in the library. We have rock and mineral kits with 75 specimens; a solar telescope; Snap Circuits electronic kits that allow you to do over 300 experiments (batteries ARE included); and kits on birds, stars, chemistry equipment, and more. We don’t know of another public library in the entire United States that allows you to check out this kind of science equipment.
