From the HCC sports desk:
BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford baseball team scored a total of 24 runs as it downed visiting Quinsigamond in a doubleheader, 12-11 and 12-5, on Wednesday at Harford Baseball Field.
The Fighting Owls (8-8) have won their last four straight, while the Chiefs (0-8) remain winless on the season.
Freshman Joe Harbach (Abingdon, Md./Edgewood) led Harford on the day, going 4-for-6 with two runs scored, four RBI, two doubles, two triples and reached base three times on walks. Harbach also tallied the game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the seventh during game one.
Freshmen Dustin Morgan (2-1) (Berryville, Pa./Clark County/Wilmington) and Brian Bosley (1-0) (Abingdon, Md./Edgewood) picked up the pitching wins for the day, with Morgan entering game one in relief in the sixth inning and pitching two scoreless and hitless innings while fanning two batters to earn his second win of the season. Bosley also pitched in relief, entering game two in the fifth, where he gave up just one run on two hits and struck out one in two innings, as the Harford offense manufactured eight runs to give him his first win, a 12-5 decision.
Bryan Moreira led the Chiefs, going 5-for-9 with three runs scored, a double and one RBI while Mike Bonner (0-2) and Edwin Garcia (0-1) were tabbed with the losses, after Bonner gave entered in relief and gave up the winning run in the bottom of the seventh in game one, and Garcia allowed nine runs (eight earned) walked four and struck out five in five innings of work in game two.
The Chiefs jumped out to a quick, 5-0 lead in the first inning of game one as Sean Hanley and Moreira each singled to start the inning, and Eric Familia batted them in with a double to left center, before Quinsigamond put runners on base with a fielder’s choice and Harford error to set Garcia up for the three run homer.
Harford’s leadoff hitter, freshman Dean Hicks (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) started things off with a single and Harbach plated him with an RBI double to left center, but it wouldn’t be until the second that the Owls would really start to make a dent in the Chief lead.
Sophomore Ron Trout (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) led-off in the inning with a solo bomb to left before two Quinsigamond errors put runners at second and third and a wild pitch plated another run for the Owls before Harbach added a groundout RBI for the third and final run of the inning, putting Harford within one, 5-4.
Freshman starter Kyle Otstot (Lewisberry, Pa./Redland) kept the Chiefs scoreless in the third and Harford added five runs in the bottom of the inning to take an 8-4 lead thanks to an RBI single by freshman Mike Rappazzo (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright), RBI double by freshman Ryan Schaeffer (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) and three-run shot by Hicks over the left field fence.
The Chiefs would battle back in the fourth with three runs to come within one, 9-8, and would take the lead in the sixth with a two-RBI double by Mike Fusco and sacrifice fly by Garcia to make the score 11-9 in their favor.
Harford knotted things up in the bottom of the inning, as Trout tallied a two-RBI double of his own and after Morgan retired the Chief lineup in order, including fanning the first two batters, Schaeffer reached base on a walk in the bottom of the seventh to put the winning run on base. Hicks advanced him to second with a sac bunt and Harbach doubled to center to plate Schaeffer and give Harford the 12-11 win.
Game two saw Harford combine for four runs in the first two innings, off a solo homer by freshman Willie Barnola (Barquisimeto, Venezuela/UEC J.G. Bastidas) in the first, an RBI single by Schaeffer in the second, followed by an RBI double by Barnola. Barnola would also score the third run of the inning as he stole home with two outs on the board.
Quinsigamond began to chip away at the lead over the next few innings, scoring two in the third and one in the fourth to cut the lead to one, 4-3 while holding Harford scoreless.
The Chiefs would take the lead in the fifth thanks to a two-run homer by Dan Prestes, but Trout would tie the score at five runs each with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning that plated Harbach, who tripled to start the inning, before Bosley retired the Chiefs in order and the Owl offense came alive to total seven runs in the sixth.
The sixth saw an RBI single by Hicks, two-RBI single by Barnola, RBI triple by Harbach, his second three-bagger in two at-bats, groundout RBI by freshman Simon Beloff (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter/Old Dominion) Chief throwing error and an RBI double by freshman Brendon Meyers (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) to give the Owls a 12-5 lead.
Meyers and freshman Seth Blackiston (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) combined for the three outs in the top of the seventh (two for Meyers, one for Blackiston) as Harford earned the 12-5 win.
The Fighting Owls continue their four-game homestand when they host CCBC-Catonsville for a single, 9-inning game at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday before finishing the week on Friday with a 1:00 p.m. game against Finger Lakes.
