From the HCC sports desk:
BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford softball team dropped both sides of a doubleheader to CCBC-Dundalk, 7-2 and 8-6, on Wednesday afternoon at Harford Stadium. The Lions (17-2, 7-1 MDJUCO) dominated the first half of the twinbill, holding Harford scoreless for the first five innings, but game two saw the Fighting Owls (7-19, 5-5 MDJUCO) tie Dundalk early and then come within on run after the Lions built a four-run lead.
Sophomore Jocelyn Kelly (Fallston, Md./Fallston) led Harford, going 4-for-7 on the day with one run, two doubles and an RBI, while freshman Sarah Cooley (4-8) (Clermont, Fla./Bel Air) and sophomore Katie Irwin (3-11) (Edgewood, Md./Harford Tech) were tabbed with the day’s losses as Cooley gave up four earned runs and Irwin five.
Irwin gave up a total of seven runs on 15 hits and struck out three in game one, while Cooley gave up eight total runs on seven hits and also fanned three batters in the nightcap.
Jaime Schmidt led the Lions on the day, going 5-for-8 with two runs scored, a triple and two RBI, while Megan Henne (11-0) and Kara Malvaso (5-0) combined for the day’s wins. Henne pitched a gem in game one, holding Harford scoreless until the sixth inning and gave up just two runs on seven hits while fanning 11 batters before entering game two in relief during the sixth to pick up the save after allowing two runs on five hits in 5.1 innings.
Malvaso earned the game two win after a four-run, seven-hit, five-strikeout 4.2 inning outing, which saw the Owls climb to within one before Henne finished the game to give Dundalk the 8-6 decision.
The Lions opened up a 4-0 lead on the Owls with two runs each in the third and fifth of game one, before sophomore Cherish Deaver (Fallston, Md./Fallston) started a two-out rally for Harford with a single in the sixth, and after sophomore Jourdan Harmon (Baltimore, Md./Catholic) reached on a walk, Kelly brought Deaver across the plate with a single to center to put the Owls on the board.
Dundalk would put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh, however, as Schmidt notched a two-run RBI triple and Shannon Burnham brought in a third run with a groundout RBI to take a 7-1 lead before sophomore Jessica Stumpf (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) added an RBI double to give Harford its final run on the way to the 7-2 loss.
Game two saw the Lions take the early lead again, with one run in the second, but this time Harford knotted things up in the bottom of the inning off an RBI double by sophomore Lauren Springel (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun).
Dundalk would tack on a single run in the second off an Owl error to take a one-run lead before the Lions lengthened their advantage to four with a three-run third inning that saw another Owl error and two passed balls.
Not to be outdone, Harford added three runs of its own in the second with three consecutive, two-out RBI doubles by Deaver, Harmon and freshman Sarah Morrill (Smyrna, Tenn./C. Milton Wright) to cut the Dundalk lead to one, 5-4.
After a scoreless sixth, which saw each team strand one runner, Jacqueline Lynch led off the seventh with a solo home run and Dundalk would add two more runs to take what would seem to be a comfortable, 8-4, four-run lead.
Freshman Audrey Werneke (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) would lead off the seventh for Harford with a single to left, but after two consecutive ground outs it looked as if she would end up stranded at third.
Harford would not go down without a fight, though as Morrill added an RBI single and Kelly reached with a base hit as well to bring the tying run to the plate in the form of Cooley. The pitcher singled to short to score Morrill to come within two, 8-6, but a groundout would equal the third out for Harford and give Dundalk the win.
The Fighting Owls return to action on Saturday when they host CCBC-Catonsville for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader at Harford Softball Field.
