On June 1, 2009, the class of 2009 from Aberdeen High School graduated. The students wore the blue and gold with pride, the families in the audience cheered, clapped and stomped their feet as the students walked into the gym and sat for the two hour ceremony.
The guests included principals from local elementary schools, the middle school, Coach Slutzky, Dr. Leonard Wheeler, Mr. Hess, Mr. Wolkow, Dr. Skeback, Ruth Ann Young, Ron Kupferman, County Ex. Craig, Senator Nancy Jacobs, Del. McComas and Del. Norman, among a variety of guests on the platform.
The speakers talked about the future, the direction the students can choose to take now, and the hard work that they had to do to get the diplomas. The students that addressed the crowd were articulate and direct, though this writer did feel pretty old listenening to the references to Barbie and Ken, and Ninja turtles, as action figures, not dolls. The A Cappella Choir did a splendid rendition of “In My Life”, congratulations to Mr. Charles Braungard on a job well done. The hero of the day was Mr. Thomas Szerensits, Principal of the AHS. The names of all of the students were read clearly and with dignity, giving each student the recognition that they earned. These were his students and his care for them was evident. Good luck, class of 2009 and God Bless!
Delegate Dan Riley says
I agree with your comments Pat. The student speakers mixed maturity with humor. I also thought Delegate Mary Dulany James comments were “right on spot”. Pat I am wondering about your eyesight…how could you miss me as a platrorm guest. I was the thorn sitting between 2 roses, Delegate James and Senator Jacobs.
