From Harford County Public Schools:
The Harford County Environmental Scholarship Program awards a $1000 scholarship to a graduating senior from each of Harford County’s ten high schools. As with any scholarship program, community support is a vital part of continued success. The monies for these scholarships are provided through the generosity of local businesses who agree to be a Corporate Sponsor of one or more of the schools. The Corporate Sponsor contributes $1000 to each school it chooses to sponsor. In addition, a countywide scholarship is awarded which is also funded through business contributions of $500, $250, and $100. At this juncture, the Harford County Environmental Scholarship Committee invites organizations to support this local scholarship program by becoming a Corporate Sponsor for one or more of our ten local high schools. This is a wonderful opportunity for an organization to demonstrate a unique partnership between their business and public education. Through partnerships and community support, we can create a community of successful lifelong learners.

Why is this award limited to just the public high schools? Harford County has several private high schools with just as deserving students (plus homeschoolers). If the goal is “a community of successful lifelong learners” then excluding private students implies: 1) that public school students may be less likely to be such lifelong learners and need the motivation while private students don’t; or 2) private students aren’t worthy of the encouragement. I applaud the sponsor for stepping up and helping students. But, as a parent of private school students, I am sensitive to the myriad of benefits that public school students already get.

I cannot believe that was even written. The myriad of Benifits. If you would like a 1000 dollar scholarship for your student then stop paying private tuition and send them to public school. If that makes sense.

wow
you can work on finding sponsors for private school scholarships. this is not tax money being used for this purpose, but private money to pay for scholarships for public school students. There is nothing preventing you from trying to do the same…good luck
