Bel Air High Wraps Up Spring Concert Series With 3 Concerts

Bel Air High School wraps up its Spring Concert Series with three concerts this coming week: Monday May 10 (Men’s and Women’s Chorus, 9th Grade Band) Tuesday May 11 (Orchestra and Guitar Ensemble) and Wednesday May 12 (Symphonic Band and Counterpoints.)

On Monday, May 12, the Bel Air High School Men’s and Women’s Choirs will perform pieces from various genres including folk–Loch Lomond, broadway–Officer Krupke, gospel–The Storm is Passing Over, and pop–Build Me Up Buttercup. The choirs will be conducted by Towson University music intern, Rachel Reid. The 9th Grade Band will perform primarily contemporary music for winds. Composers such as Ralph Ford, Richard Saucedo, Roland Barrett and Jerry Brubaker will be featured. Bel Air High School music student, Christina McIntyre, will also be featured as a student conductor.

On Tuesday May 11 the Bel Air High School Orchestra will perform Vivaldi’s Concerto in E Minor for Cello and Bassoon, featuring seniors Madeline Clifton on cello and Casey Butler on bassoon. Also on the program are “Chester Variations ,” by Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra Director and Harford County music teacher Sheldon Bair.

Opening the concert will be the Bel Air High School Guitar Ensemble, who will also join the orchestra for their finale, an orchestral arrangement of the rock classic “Stairway to Heaven.”

Wednesday’s concert will feature the Bel Air High School Counterpoints and the Bel Air High School Symphonic Band. The Counterpoints’ performance will include Mozart’s Dies Irae and Tate’s Gate Gate–pieces for which the choir recently received a “superior” rating at the Maryland State Choral Festival. In addition to several contemporary pieces, the Symphonic Band’s performance will include the premier of a new work for wind band composed by the group’s director, Tony Domenico. The groups will combine in a performance of Sapier’s Story by Maryland composer Brian Balmages. The work is a musical portrait of the tragic events of September 11, 2001 as seen through the eyes of Sapier Jamie Behr, a 9-year old girl who experienced the events first hand.

All concerts are in the Bel Air High School Auditorium–the new home of the Bel Air High School Music Department. Concerts begin at 7:00 p.m. and there is a $3.00 admission charge.
