From Harford County government:
(Street, MD) – – Nestled into the countryside along Deer Creek sits the Harford County 4-H Conference & Retreat Center. Not part of the Rocks State Park, but often referred to as the 4-H Camp at the Rocks, the facility has been serving 4-H’ers and the community since 1925.
The flagpole circle in front of Deer Creek Overlook is the perfect spot to memorialize a man who served the people of the county and the youth of our community with a generous heart and courageous spirit. “Senator Hooper walked the talk, always putting others in front of himself; now we have the opportunity to honor the man before we enter this wonderful new building,” said Kim Bachmann, President of Harford County 4-H Clubs, Inc.
“This project has allowed our local community to lend a hand creating a beautiful memorial garden that will greet every guest.” North Harford’s senior FFA class was challenged to design and install a garden that would include native species that were hardy enough to withstand the direct sun while offering variety and interest year-round. Dene’ Bruce’s class spent the winter months considering plant alternatives and designs. Bruce said, “The most common theme was the bench, and the biggest challenge was selecting moderately priced plants that the Camp might be able to have donated.”
The design constraints were successful allowing Bachmann and other board volunteers to acquire nearly all of the plants and hardscape materials as donations.
“The 4-H Camp itself carries brand recognition, but these donations were really about the Senator and what he has meant to people. Senator Hooper is remembered for working for his constituents and his presence at the 4-H livestock auctions, community award banquets, graduations and more, commented Bachmann.”
Harford County 4-H Clubs, Inc. acknowledges and thanks the community businesses, groups, and individuals that contributed to this lasting memory of Senator Hooper including: North Harford FFA, Harford County 4-H Volunteer Association, Charles and Eileen Daughton, T&M Mulch, The Bel Air Moose Lodge, Manor View Nursery, Fritz Farm and Nursery, Greenspring Nursery, and Hemphill’s Garden Center, Inc.
