Burlington, VT – The Aberdeen IronBirds pounded out 15 hits and scored 10 times on Friday night, as they defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters 10-4.
The IronBirds took the lead in the first inning. CF Trent Mummey worked a walk. He advanced to second on a ground out, before LF Kipp Schutz drove him in with a double. The RBI-two-bagger gave Aberdeen an early 1-0 lead.
Vermont, though, took the lead in its half of the first. With two outs, LHP Tyler Sexton walked SS Jason Martinson. DH David Freitas knocked him in on a double down the left field line. The next batter, 3B Justin Miller, drove in Freitas with an RBI-single, giving the Lake Monsters a 2-1 lead.
Aberdeen re-took the lead in the fourth. Schutz led off the frame with a bunt single. 3B Adam Gaylord grounded a double down the left field line, putting runners on second and third with nobody out. DH Michael Flacco knocked in Schutz with a single to center, tying the ball game at two. 1B David Anderson then lined a single into left-center field, knocking in Gaylord. RF Blair Dunlap sacrificed the runners to second and third base. C Joe Oliveira hit a ground out to short, driving in Flacco from third, and giving Aberdeen a two-run lead.
The Lake Monsters pulled to within one in the fourth. Martinson led off the inning with a triple off the right-center field wall. Sexton then hit back-to-back batters with pitches, loading the bases. A batter later, 1B Ronnie LaBrie worked a walk, knocking in Martinson from third base and making it a 4-3 game.
Aberdeen got the run back and more in the fifth. With 2B Omar Casamayor on first base and one out, Schutz doubled off of the right-center field wall. Gaylord then singled, knocking in Casamayor. A batter later, Anderson drove Schutz in from third with a single to center, making it a 6-3 IronBirds lead.
Sexton left the game with two men out in the sixth. The southpaw allowed three runs on three hits. He walked five and struck out four.
The IronBirds tacked on a seventh run in the seventh inning. Flacco led off the inning with a walk. Anderson grounded out to second, moving Flacco into scoring position. He scored on RF Blair Dunlap’s first professional hit, a single to left field.
Vermont made it a three-run game in the eighth. With Miller on first and two down, C Wilfri Pena hit an RBI-double to left field.
In the ninth inning, Anderson (4) hit a two-run homer to right field. Later in the inning, with a runner on first and two outs Mummey hit an RBI-double to the wall in right-center, making the score 10-4.
Sexton (1-2) got the win. RHP Taylor Jordan (1-1) took the loss. Jordan allowed six runs, all earned, on eight hits. RHP Steve Mazur (1) picked up a save in his first appearance with the IronBirds. He pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings.
The IronBirds will open a three-game series with the Lowell Spinners on Saturday evening at LaLacheur Park. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PM.
