(Bel Air, MD) – – Mary Chance, Director of the Harford County Department of Community Services has been tapped by Harford County Executive David R. Craig to succeed Lorraine Costello as Director of Administration for Harford County Government. Costello has announced her plans to retire at the end of the year.
“We are delighted to nominate Mary Chance for Director of Administration and look forward to her leadership in helping us to continue our work of improving the efficiency and economy of government as well as improving the quality of life for the citizens of this great county,” County Executive Craig stated.
Chance, who began her career with Harford County Government in March of 1987, must be confirmed by the Harford County Council when they convene in January.
Prior to becoming Director for the Department of Community Services, Ms. Chance was the Community Resources Coordinator for the department and also served as volunteer coordinator at the Harford County Office on Aging.
In her current position, Ms. Chance is responsible for Harford Transit, the Office on Aging, the Office of Drug Control Policy, the Office of Human Relations, the Community Development Program, the Grant in Aid Program and supervises funding pertaining to the administration of the Community Development Block Grant, HOME Program and the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council. Additionally, Ms. Chance oversees Volunteer Harford, the Harford County Mediation Commission, Disabilities Commission, the Commission for Women, the Youth Commission and the Kid’s C.A.N. Mentoring Program.
The Director of Administration reports to the County Executive and coordinates the work and activities of 11 departments of county government.
Ms. Chance moved to Harford County in 1966 from Kentucky and now resides in Bel Air. Ms. Chance stated among her favorite things in life are being a mother and a grandmother.
Commenting on her nomination by County Executive Craig, Ms. Chance stated, “I am honored and humbled to be nominated to be Director of Administration for Harford County Government. I will do all I can to ensure a smooth and seamless transition with Mrs. Costello prior to her retirement. I look forward to the many opportunities that lie ahead during the next four years of the Craig Administration.”
