Harford County Sheriff’s Northern Precinct Investigative Unit deputies arrested Rory W. Leftwich, age 41, of the 800 block of Kingston Court in Edgewood, MD on Wednesday, November 17, 2010. Leftwich has been linked to over 100 separate incidents of thefts from motor vehicles taking place since September in variety of jurisdictions to include Harford, Baltimore and Howard Counties. In addition to charges relating to the thefts from the various motor vehicles, Leftwich faces felony charges for the burglary of The Mill at Black Horse in White Hall, MD that occurred on November 1, 2010.
On Wednesday, October 25, 2010, Harford County Sheriff’s Office patrol deputies received a report for a theft from a motor vehicle that occurred at the 7-11 in Jarrettsville, MD at approximately 3:30am. The suspect, now identified as Rory Leftwich, smashed the driver’s side car window, while the victim was inside the convenience store shopping. The suspect reached in and stole the victim’s purse containing cash and credit cards. After attempting to use the victim’s credit card at another location, detectives were able to obtain surveillance footage of the suspect, as well as, the make and model of the vehicle he was driving.
On November 1, 2010 shortly before 2am, Harford County Sheriff’s Office patrol deputies received a call for a burglary/intrusion alarm from The Mill at Black Horse in White Hall, MD. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a glass panel to the right of the entry door had been shattered and entry had been gained into the business. The suspect stole approximately $500.00 worth of Carhartt Outerwear. Surveillance video provided from the business revealed that the suspect seen from this burglary matched the suspect seen in the surveillance video obtained from the business where the stolen credit card from October 25, 2010 was used.
Through investigation, the Northern Precinct Investigative Unit deputies were able to develop enough evidence to obtain a search and seizure warrant on the suspect’s home in the 800 block of Kingston Court in Edgewood, MD that was executed on Wednesday, November 17, 2010. Deputies seized over $25,000 worth of assorted items stolen from over 100 motor vehicles in the Bel Air, Fallston, Joppa, Madonna, Abingdon, Forest Hill, and Jarrettsville neighborhoods in Harford County, as well as Howard and Baltimore Counties.
“We have noticed a growing trend of outsiders traveling into Harford County to commit these types of crimes. Unfortunately, too often they find vehicles and homes left unlocked and easy to access,” stated Captain Doug Verzi, Commander of the Northern Precinct. “We want to remind Harford County citizens to be vigilant in locking their homes and cars. Don’t make it easy for a thief to turn you into a victim.”
Items recovered include over 100 GPS units, portable electronic game systems, IPods & other MP3 devices, sunglasses, sports equipment, clothing, shoes, cameras, cash, credit cards, tools, jewelry, watches and a handgun. Deputies are currently categorizing the evidence and contacting identifiable owners of the items recovered. In several cases, the victims of the alleged thefts had not reported the original crime. Therefore, the Harford County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone that believes that a theft from their motor vehicle may be related to the thefts involved in this case is encouraged to contact DFC John Brown or DFC William McMillion of the Northern Precinct Investigative Unit at 410-692-7862.
Rory W. Leftwich, age 41, from Howard County MD had recently moved to Edgewood, MD. He faces felony charges to include, theft over $1000 and less than $10,000, theft scheme over $1000 and less than $ 10,000, and burglary 2nd degree. He also faces several misdemeanor charges to include theft less than $1000, credit card theft, fraudulent intent to avoid payment less than $500.00, and illegal possession of a firearm. He is currently being held without bail at the Harford County Detention Center awaiting trial.
Once again, the thief is from Edgewood!
Oh for heavens sake read the article – the man is from Howard County recently moved to Edgewood!
Its easier for folks not to read and skim for what they want to hear. Glad he’s caught though. Unfortunately the same goes for journalism in some instances.
It’s obvious that White Hall is turning into the next Edgewood.
Wow! Mr. Leftwich has platinum frequent flier status with the Public Defender’s Office.
This is a problem. While Lefty has an impressive arrest history, he only has two serious convictions and a few other not so serious ones. Thus, let us all hope the Assistant State’s Atty can convince the Judge this guy is a risk of flight and a danger to the community. Otherwise, he may actually get a reasonable bail and be out for the holidays pending trial.
I encourage everyone to write their state representatives and insist that something be done to change the way bail is decided in Maryland courts. The big hurdle is Delegate JOSEPH F. VALLARIO, JR joseph.vallario@house.state.md.us

As head of the Judiciary Committee, he is too powerful for his own good. Another reason why Maryland should have rotating Committee Chairmanships every two years.
With any luck perhaps the Feds will charge Lefty with Felon in Possession of a Handgun while the locals charge him with various theft/burglary and others. This guy should get more time for the stolen handgun charge that he will actually have to serve instead of a stet/pbj with early parole. Gotta love Belair!!!!
