From the City of Havre de Grace:
First came Black Friday, then came Cyber Monday, and now, November 27th becomes “Small Business Saturday”, a day to actively support those small businesses that we care so much about. This is the day to celebrate the small businesses that boost our local economy and preserve the character of our neighborhood.
While Black Friday and Cyber Monday drive sales to national chains and online retailers, Small Business Saturday recognizes the importance of small, independently owned businesses to the local economy and community. The City of Havre de Grace is proud to partner with American Express OPEN, the division of card products and services devoted exclusively to small business owners, on this national movement to encourage consumers to support local retailers.
In 2008 the City of Havre de Grace Office of Tourism introduced the Think Local First Campaign. The THINK LOCAL FIRST “support Havre de Grace Businesses” campaign continues to be a major economic program designed to help consumers recognize that supporting locally owned independent businesses keeps up to 3 times more money re-circulating in our local economy; maintains the uniqueness of our neighborhoods and creates and maintains jobs. The campaign began September 2008 with an initial focus on restaurants, retail and service businesses.
“The city offers a wide variety of experiences and activities for tourists and Harford County citizens alike,” commented Mayor Wayne Dougherty. “The vitality of the businesses in Havre de Grace is an important aspect of tourism.”
“We live in a community that is a richly rewarding destination,” stated Brigitte Peters, the City of Havre de Grace Marketing and Tourism Manager. “The goal of Small Business Saturday is to remind everyone to Think Local First, think about all the wonderful unique shopping, dining, and extended stays that can be created in Havre de Grace.” Your support of our small and independent business is what makes our community the gem that it is.
