From the Chesapeake Heritage Conservancy, Inc.:
Ahoy!
As I wrote in our last Happenings the Martha Lewis had transmission trouble on her second day of oystering. We have received word from the marina that she will need a new bell housing and her transmission may have to be rebuilt. Also, during one of the heavy wind storms in mid-December, Martha’s push boat was damaged resulting in a large hole along her side. This is where we need your help.
As if those items weren’t enough – while doing a normal out of the water survey we discovered that side plank, just 4 years old, have some rot and must be repaired. We have also just had the Coast Guard hull inspection and a few other things were found that must be addressed. We need your help!
The estimated cost to repair the Martha Lewis is $25,000. Many thanks to a generous friend who has loaned us the funds needed. We will be raising the funds over the next 9 months. The Skipjack Martha Lewis is a very special vessel, one that is in the hearts of many and it is our intention to keep her for generations to come. It is said that it takes a community to raise a child, well the Martha Lewis is one of our children and we are looking to her community to help keep her sailing on the Bay where she belongs. Won’t you join us in this effort?
I am asking you to consider a donation to cover the cost of her repairs — it will be greatly appreciated. No donation is too small and your continued support is very important. Please send your donation payable to Chesapeake Heritage Conservancy, 121 N Union Avenue, Suite C, Havre de Grace, MD 21078 or clink here for debit or credit card donations through PayPal.
Thank you for your support and for helping to make the upcoming season a success.
So says
This is one fundraiser I will not be attending. They are a FOR-PROFIT organization. I’m sure they have insurance on the vessel that should cover any damages, after all it is a state law.
