An Edgewood home was severely damaged by a fire early Wednesday morning which claimed the life of a cat, according to fire authorities.
The blaze was discovered shortly after 1 a.m. by the owner of a home in the 800 block of Olive Branch Court in Edgewood, according to the state fire marshal’s office. The fire, which began in the basement, was brought under control in about 10 minutes by 50 firefighters from the Joppa-Magnolia, Abingdon, Bel Air, and Aberdeen Proving Ground fire departments.
A cat perished in the fire, according to fire officials, who said the home’s owner is being assisted by family.
Damage to the home were estimated at $50,000, while damages to its contents were estimated at $20,000, the state fire marshal’s office said. A smoke alarm was present and working, but the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
