From Harford County Public Schools:
“A Case for Smiles” is a program by ConKerr Cancer designed to help children feel special while battling life-changing illnesses. ConKerr Cancer started when Cindy Kerr’s son was diagnosed with cancer in 2002, and she began making pillowcases to brighten up his hospital room and to put a smile on his face. He loved it, and so she began making pillowcases for other children on the Oncology Unit at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Since then the pillowcase project, A Case for Smiles, has grown in amazing ways. They have provided nearly 400,000 pillowcases made by thousands of volunteers from across North America and in South Africa. School groups, sewing circles, church groups and fabric stores have all pitched in and are making pillowcases for the kids.
Students at John Archer are able to measure, cut, pin, and even help sew these pillowcases. They have learned so much by being involved in this project. Most importantly, they have seen how they can help to bring happiness to others and make a difference in the lives of children with needs even greater than their own.
If you would like to help impact lives of children battling illnesses, please contact Sandy Finley at 410-638-3810. Colorful, kid-friendly, coordinating fabric is always needed to make the pillowcases, and any assistance is always appreciated.
