From the Town of Bel Air:
The Bel Air Cultural Arts Commission announces the 2011 Town of Bel Air Film Festival to be held October 21-23, 2011 at the Bel Air Reckord Armory, 37-41 North Main Street in Bel Air. This year’s movie lineup features thought provoking, reflective and delightful films from around the country.
Opening night, Friday, October 21st at 8:00 pm features a 2011 Sundance Film Festival selection, Rebirth. The Rebirth film crew chronicled the lives of five people directly affected by 9/11 from 2002 to 2009. The participants include a survivor from the South Tower of the World Trade Center (WTC); a firefighter who survived the collapse of the WTC but lost his best friend; a high school student who lost his mother; a young woman who lost her fiancé; and a construction worker who lost his brother. Their stories show what the human spirit can do after tremendous grief, loss and trauma. Special guest speaker is Anthony Cruz, a 9/11 survivor. Jack Gerbes, Director of the Maryland Film Office, and Rob Reier, Town of Bel Air Commissioner, will open the festival. Doors open at 7:30 pm.
Saturday, October 22nd at 4:00 pm features Cafeteria Man with special guest speaker Emmy-award winning director Richard Chisolm. Cafeteria Man chronicles an ambitious effort by the fascinating and charismatic former New Orleans chef Tony Geraci to “go green” the Baltimore City public school diet by replacing pre-plated, processed foods with locally-grown, freshly-prepared meals.
Saturday’s lineup continues at 7:30 pm with the award winning film Buck. Winner of the U.S. Documentary Audience Award at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, Buck follows real-life “horse-whisperer” Buck Brannaman from his abusive childhood to his phenomenally successful approach to horses. Brannaman is the inspiration for Robert Redford’s 1998 film, “The Horse Whisperer”. Buck is sponsored by Brain and Spine Specialists.
Sunday, October 23rd at 3 pm will feature the delightful award winning Becoming Santa with Special Guest Santa Claus. Becoming Santa is the story of Jack Sanderson who, after the death of his parents, rather than avoid Christmas, decides to dive into the deepest part of the Christmas pool and become Santa. (Not recommended for children under 10 years of age.)
Tickets are $5 per person and include one complimentary soda and popcorn. Children 10 years of age and younger are free. Comfortable table seating is available and attendees can bring their own snacks and blankets too! Free snowballs will be available on Sunday, courtesy of Sharon’s Hawaiian Shaved Ice of Bel Air.
The Festival’s main sponsors include the Bel Air Cultural Arts Commission and the Bel Air Economic & Community Development Commission. Co-sponsors include Center for the Arts, Bel Air Downtown Alliance, and Harford County Cultural Arts Board. Honorary sponsors include the Maryland Film Festival and the Maryland Film Office. Buck is sponsored by Brain and Spine Specialists.
