From the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum:
“Hurricanes and the Chesapeake Bay Region”
Wednesday, October 12, 2011 ~ 7 pm
This presentation by Rick Schwartz covers the four risk areas from hurricanes: rainfall related flooding, tidal area flooding, high winds and tornadoes. Those risks are examined from a historical perspective. The hour-long presentation highlights some of the big hurricanes to affect the Chesapeake Bay region. Some of the storms discussed include the destructive hurricanes of 1769 and 1775 (which destroyed the Maryland State House), the October 1878 “Great Gale”, the “Great Gust” of 1896, the August 1933 Chesapeake and Potomac Hurricane, as well as hurricanes Hazel(1954), Agnes (1972), and Isabel (2003).
