From the Maryland State Police, Bel Air Barrack:
On Saturday, Nov. 5 at 3:54 p.m., troopers from the Bel Air Barrack responded to a two car motor vehicle collision at the 3100 block of Churchville Road (near Aldino Road). The vehicles involved were a 2008 Hyundai Elantra, operated by Joshua John Hanna, 21 years old, of Street, MD and a 1994 Dodge Ram pickup, operated by Jordan Craig Stewart, 26 years old, of Churchville, MD.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the Dodge pickup was traveling westbound on Route 22 and the Hyundai was traveling eastbound on Route 22. The operator of the Dodge failed to keep right of the centerline and traveled into the opposing lane (eastbound) and struck the Hyundai head on.
The operator of the Hyundai, Joshua John Hanna, was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma by Maryland State Police MEDEVAC where he was pronounced deceased by medical personnel.
The operator of the Dodge pickup, Jordan Craig Stewart, sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Bayview Hospital.
The roadway was closed for nearly four hours during the investigation of the crash. This collision remains under investigation.

I love taking these off the path roads in the County, but I am always nervous when I do because we have about one of these accidents every other month.
Worst part, I don’t even know how we can prevent them.
Build better wider roads to accommodate the volume of traffic navigating on these undersized bike paths.
Sorry, I did not mean to be insensitive to the loss of a life, I was just shocked and disappointed to see such careless work on the part of someone related to this story. The victim and the readers deserve better and the Dagger always seems to do better. If you are correct that the original story posting is reflective of the lack of attention by the state police, I hope the investigation gets more thorough attention than the press release did.
Looking up Jordan Stewarts driving record, it seems like he has a problem following the speed limit. Not saying thats what caused this tragic accident, but it seems like it may turn out to be a factor looking at his prior record…
Its a shame some innocent person has to lose their life before certain people can safely follow the rules of the road.

Dave – no one’s rights were violated by the poster who reviewed Mr. Stewart’s record on MD Judiciary Case Search. That site is public record and there is no reason to cry foul. Technology has changed. Court records were always public info unless specifically sealed by a Judge. What used to require a hand search in a court house records room is now available on line in most states, fortunately.
Your comments are way off base. No one slandered/libeled Stewart. All that the poster did was highlight his driving record which is the truth. Calm down, get over your paranoia please.
I appreciate what you said. I think you may have misunderstood the meaning behind my remarks. Law Enforcement and Probation and Parole are capable of using it and they can often be counted on to act on the information – but sometimes they are unaware that they are dealing with a repeat offender. My own experience has shown me that while I am keenly aware of a person’s contribution to criminal activities and repeat failures of responsibility, my ability to get others to act on it, to see the pattern of behaviors that are there, has been unsuccessful. Once in a great while you can get someone in authority to act on the information contained in MD Case Search, but it is a tool that is underutilized by the people that make it possible for us to use it.
Born and raised here. Been here for six decades and parts of two others. Like our roads just fine. New, wider roads do nothing but attract more traffic. Wreckless drivers create problems. Nuff said.
I basically agree. I95 is about as wide as a road can get, and there are still head-on accidents on it a few times a year. Bigger roads are not inherently safer. I do think there are some things that can be done to make them safer, improving sight lines, rumble strips, brighter/refreshed lane markings, etc.
But the overall point being made, I think, is that there is growth going on in the County that isn’t properly being addressed by the infrastructure. Many County roads are getting heavier traffic than they were designed for, and with this, I completely agree. And it lends to the lack of saftey for drivers.
Otto, I’ve heard that comment from you before. Exactly what logic do you use to justify the remark that wider roads attract more traffic? From your perception are you trying to suggest that because Harford County’s Roads could be wider that people from other communities where the roads are narrower would suddenly be attracted to our wider roads? We have more traffic Otto because people have moved here from other communities in the time since you were born and raised here. We have more people, we have more homes, we have more traffic. The roads do nothing to attract people to move here – I can assure you of that, since I have lived elsewhere and your roads are under developed for the population that this area now supports. Please repeat your comment again Otto… I look forward to your educated rebuttal citing the data you use to make such a ludicrous comment.
Mr. Porter, your statement that roads do nothing to attract people here is ludicrous. Do you honestly believe that if I-95 were not built that Harford County’s population would have grown from 35,000 in 1940 to 245,000 in 2010?
Remember when the new Route 24 was built? Do you think if that road wasn’t built that there would be the same number of homes and apartments that line the way from Abingdon to Bel Air? (To say nothing of the new subdivisions in Rocks Spring and Forest Hill.)
Mr. Porter, I suggest you aquaint yourself with the scholarly literature on the subject of regional transportation and the effects of road widening and construction. A good place to start is the book “Still Stuck in Traffic” by Anthony Downs, but there are many others. Empirical evidence suggests that when roads are widened, they become just as congested after a short period of time, and often become much less safe. Otto’s previous comment is right on the mark.
Population is the driver. If you built a six lane interstate in the middle of Nevada with no population centers around it would you see an increase in traffic density? Building wider roads is driven by population centers that have grown or are growing – except in Harford County.
I think you’re both wrong– and right. What Harford, and many other places do these day is manage growth and zoning so that roads reach their capacity, then they look for funds from the State and Federal governments to redesign and build more roads to increase capacity to meet the need. Residents complain, roads are built, people are happy.
Then the voracious appetite for continued growth, and the associated tax revenues, causes more zoning changes and altered growth plans, and the cycle repeats.
Can you blame the growth or the expanded roads? Well you can blame both. But more importantly, you can blame elected officials for continuing the cycle. Of course, you can also blame those who elected them, because they don’t want to be told that they are going to have to live with congested roads, or pay more taxes or fees, they want someone else to pay for it. And usually that ends up being the people signified by the “growth.”
I really think the growth, economic development and tax revenue cycle is a publically operated ponzi scheme. Life would get interesting if we ever forced ourselves to balance between the two and one day ever decide not to “grow” any more.
Can’t you see what we need?? A tragic head on accident on a state road! We need Glassman and Stifler to get us a barrier built just like on the Bypass. Lets see the machine of state government get to work, some good political face time on the news and a few million dolllars later, we can stop this type of accident from ever happening again on Rt. 22!
Josh you will be missed by many. It is a shame you were taken so young but rest in. peace.
I would like to know if what one of the witness’ said was true. They said the truck was crossing the center line for a few miles lookied like he was texting in the truck. Josh was my friend and will be greaty missed.
I’m sure the authorities are checking his phone records as we speak.
I have known the Hanna family for a very long time and I was shocked to hear of Josh’s passing. To Mr. & Mrs. Hanna, Justin, Amanda, and Amber stay strong in these hard times and don’t lose faith. My deepest sympathy to all their loved ones!

My cousin is now dead. Not due to the roads but due to someones stupidity of driving. I hope Jordan gets his license taken away, and gets put away. I am sure he is sorry but do not think anyone knows how many people are in pain and he get’s to live when Josh is dead.
