An Aberdeen Middle School student was arrested and charged with malicious burning and reckless endangerment after allegedly setting a fire in the school Friday morning.
At 9:30 a.m. Friday, an Aberdeen Middle School teacher discovered a trashcan had been lit on fire in a bathroom.
The juvenile was charged and released to the custody of his guardian. He will be referred to the Department of Juvenile Services.
There was no fire department response and no damage to the facility.
The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal released a statement emphasizing that it takes this type of incident very seriously.
“While the fire was extinguished and contained to the trash can inside the restroom, this type of behavior can lead to panic and possible injuries. The investigation revealed the juvenile has a history of fire setting. He was referred to the Dept. of Juvenile Services and the State Fire Marshal Juvenile Firesetter Program.”
