From Harford County government:
A major step toward developing a university-affiliated research park in Harford County was taken yesterday with the first organizational meeting of the Northeastern Maryland University Research Park Corporation. Daniel DeMarinis was selected as president of the corporation, with John Ferriter and Eric McLauchlin, Esq. serving as vice presidents. John Wasilisin and John Casner will serve as Treasurer and Associate Treasurer, respectively, and Dr. James LaCalle and William Suchting will serve as Secretary and Associate Secretary, respectively. In addition there are 16 leaders from industry, government, and the academic community serving as board members.
The creation of the corporation is the result of an ad hoc University Research Park (URP) committee established by the Harford County Economic Development Advisory Board (EDAB) with the charge to determine the best way forward to attract and develop a university-level research program to the county. The committee reviewed the research needs of the programs at Aberdeen Proving Ground and held numerous meetings with military and private sector leaders in the areas of communications, electronics, testing and evaluation, chemical and biological research, and other emerging high technology domains. This led to the development of the Northeastern Maryland University Research Park, LLC, a 501(c)(3) corporation.
Commenting on the creation of the Northeastern Maryland University Research Park Corporation, County Executive David R. Craig stated, “This represents a significant milestone in our efforts to leverage our highly-skilled workforce and the resources that exist at APG to create opportunities for advanced education and high tech research for Harford County and the surrounding region.”
EDAB chair Eric McLauchlin stated, “The County has seen a great deal of interest in research at the graduate and post doctoral level, and the County stands ready to meet those research needs through the Research Park Corporation. It will be the goal and objective of the corporation to team research needs from the Department of Defense with universities who have world renowned programs in the appropriate areas of study.”
Mr. DeMarinis, newly elected President of the corporation commented, “This is an exciting time and opportunity to support the APG community and our warfighters by establishing a nationally-recognized multidisciplinary academic, science, and research campus creating technology-led economic growth for the northeastern Maryland region, while solving national problems that advance our security. We anticipate that the URP, led by many of our community’s technical, educational, and business leaders will result in additional advanced education opportunities, research collaboration, and technology incubation. It is important to work with the APG community to ensure that the transformation goals of the URP are met. I know that we are ready for the challenge.”
