(Edgewood, MD – December 8, 2011 – 12:30 p.m.) On Thursday, December 8, 2011 at approximately 8:57 a.m., Harford County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 1300 block of Harford Square Drive, O Court in Edgewood, MD for a report of a woman screaming in the area.
Upon arrival deputies found that the woman in question had discovered a 21-year-old male deceased in a silver Dodge Magnum parked in the area. Deputies confirmed that the male, identified as Christopher Curtis Alves, was in fact deceased in the vehicle from what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. It was determined that the victim is a resident of Edgewood. At this time, detectives do not believe that the shooting was a random act of violence.
The death is being investigated as a homicide. Harford County Sheriff’s Office detectives are in the early stages of their investigation. Anyone with information regarding this crime should contact Detective Andy Lane of the Harford County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigative Division at 410-836-5431.

How many homicides does this make for Harford County this year?
Mike Smith says
It makes zero if you are talking about random acts of violence against innocent persons.
Retiredawhile says
I was not asking about random acts of violence. I was asking as to how many homicides had occurred in Harford County to date. I am sure there are random acts of violence which have not resulted in an homicide. I believe the article states that the police do not believe it was a random act of violence.
Marie says
Not true Mike, Let’s not foget, the murder of Patrick Ward was a random act of violence against an innocent person.

Harford Square…when is the county going to wake up and shut that place down. Too many residents are tired of these continued pockets of crime ruining a great community. Do something HC please
Peter says
Harford Square isn’t a public housing complex, it’s a townhouse development. So I’m not sure how the county is supposed to “shut it down”.
The problem with Harford Square is that a large number of the townhouses are rentals, not owner occupied. Plus there are large low rent/section 8 apartment complexes nearby. Not surprising that there would be some drug/crime problems.
I say this as a resident of Edgewood. I’m hoping that with the tougher economy, and more people moving to the area, more people/families will move into the cheaper townhouses in Edgewood and fix them up.

With headlines like this I could be living on North Avenue. Next election we need a change, or if you like this type of news, keep on electing Sheriff Jesse Bayne.
David A. Porter says
Sheriff Bane is not the root cause of this problem. While it always seems like a solution for simple people to blame one person for the troubles of a community, this is only a symptom of the underlying problems that are rampant in this county. Check the victim’s MD Case Search history. Also read the article on the suspect that died in the detention center. He was required to pay for his own rehab, and defaulted on the contract. Judge Cooper co-authored an article that identified 17% of inmates as having a certifiable mental illness; did anyone think to ask if prison gave them their mental illness or were they like that before they got there? When a citizen can see patterns of behavior and they report it to the court as an indication that someone needs an emergency evaluation, some standard less than a physical threat should be considered. The warning signs are there for everyone to see; marginalizing these people only delays their treatment and offers them further opportunities to bring harm to others.
EDGEWOOD RESIDENT says
Your commont about Sheriff Bane only makes sense if it was him that pulled the trigger. Otherwise, you have no justification to balme him for this at all. Police can’t predict the crimes before they happen.
Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus says
Sheriff Bane does as much as can and should be done in terms of strategic and tactical planning to reduce crime in Harford County and particularly in Edgewood. This shooting as well as others in Harford Square and similar areas need more community commitment and community involvement in order to be prevented and stopped.
Unfortunately, the prelude to the crimes here are generated in the homes, in the associations, and social activities here.
If, an individual gets involved in something illicit anywhere else BUT, resides here, has close acquaintances here, or frequent social interactions here they are going to be tracked down to here and shot here.
If, a parent is not involved enough to govern through question, critique, modification, and censure of their child’s actions, social interactions, possessions, travel, and associations then that parent has absolutely no control over whether that child becomes a victim or a predator.
The Harford County sheriffs department employs the most strategic and comprehensive tactics to abate crime here. It is the parents and the community that need to make more of an effort than just whining and looking for someon else’s help.
Retiredawhile says
You make it sound like Edgewood is doomed. Nothing can be done until the parents change, until the social habits of the people change, and who the Edgewood people associate with that then track them down in Edgewood and shoot them.
Perhaps you are right, Sheriff Bane is doing all that he knows to do. There are many who might disagree that he is doing all that can be done, and that he has deployed the best strategic plan possible for crime abatement. But given your comments about the people, it would appear that, whatever the Sheriff’s Office does, it will not impact crime because the people are losers.

The problems with edgewood comes from baltimore city and linked to a very small section 8 area.I can only hope that the new police station will help reduce these crimes in the future. The map of this small area looks like it came be done with extra police and more cameras.
