FISHKILL, NY – The Aberdeen IronBirds opened the 2012 campaign on Monday night with a loss to the Hudson Valley Renegades. Entering the bottom of the fourth with the game tied at two, Hudson Valley scored a pair of runs against IronBirds’ starter Sebastian Vader then tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning en route to 7-3 victory on opening night.
Hudson Valley’s Marty Gantt drove in the first run of the 2012 season with a RBI single to centerfield that Tommy Coyle. Aberdeen quickly responded in the top of the second with a run to tie the game up at one. After a Joe Velleggia doubled down the left field line, Roberto Ortiz stepped to the dish. Ortiz lined the first pitch he saw to right field for a RBI single.
The Renegades regained the lead in the bottom of the second but Aberdeen tied the game up at two in the top of the third. After Jerome Pena advanced to second on a Jeff Ames wild pitch, Roderick Bernadina grounded a ball to the left side of the infield. Bernadina beat out the throw from Felix Gonzalez. Without hesitation, Pena rounded third and scored easily on the play to tie the game up at two.
In the bottom of the fourth, Hudson Valley began to pull away. The Renegades plated two runs in the frame off Vader then in the fifth inning Hudson Valley put three runs on the board against RHP Ryan Palsha. With two outs and two on, DH Justin O’Connor singled to center allowing 1B Luke Maile and LF Joel Caminero to score. C Jake DePew followed O’Connor’s at bat with a RBI double to right-center.
The IronBirds scored one run in the sixth inning but it wasn’t enough as the Renegades took the season opener in Hudson Valley, 7-3.
Jeff Ames picked up the win for the Renegades while Sebastian Vader got the loss after he allowed four runs, three earned, over four innings of work.
Jerome Pena finished the night 2-for-4 at the plate with a triple, run scored, and a walk.
Aberdeen and Hudson Valley will return to the field on Tuesday night at Dutchess Stadium with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m. RHP Jaime Esquivel will start for the IronBirds while the Renegades will turn to RHP Jesse Hahn. Coverage on the IronBirds Radio Network will begin at 6:20 p.m.
