From the Aberdeen IronBirds:
Facing a three-game sweep in Staten Island, the IronBirds put seven runs on the board and cruised to a 7-2 victory over the Yankees. RHP Mark Blackmar pitched brilliantly in his second professional start and SS Joel Hutter had a pair of RBI doubles in the victory.
After the IronBirds went down in order in the top of the first, the Birds’ bat put a pair of runs on the board in the second inning. 3B Torsten Boss led off the frame with a double down the right field line. Up next, RF Roberto Ortiz didn’t waste any time to bring home Boss from second. Ortiz blooped a single into right-center off LHP Tim Flight. Ortiz came around to score later in the second on a sac fly from 1B Cameron Edman.
With a lead in his back pocket, RHP Mark Blackmar settled in. Blackmar tossed a career-high 6.2 innings on the night and surrendered just one unearned run on four hits. To close out his evening, Blackmar struck out Ravel Santana.
SS Joel Hutter increased the IronBirds lead in the fourth inning when he doubled home Torsten Boss. Hutter hit another RBI double in the sixth inning as the Aberdeen plated three more runs in the top of the sixth.
LF Anthony Vega scored the IronBirds final run on the night in the ninth inning. Vega reached when he was hit by an Evan DeLuca breaking ball. Vega proceeded to steal second and third base before coming home to score on a Creede Simpson sac fly.
RHP Gene Escat closed out Wednesday night’s game with a perfect ninth inning.
Mark Blackmar (1-1) picked up the win on the night while Tim Flight (0-1) got the loss.
The IronBirds begin a three-game series with the Brooklyn Cyclones on Thursday night at MCU Park. RHP Juan Guzman (0-0, 1.80) will take the hill for the Birds while the Cyclones will turn RHP Julian Hilario (0-0, 1.50). First pitch from Brooklyn, NY is set for 7:00 p.m. with coverage on the IronBirds Radio Network beginning at 6:30 p.m.
